<div class="text-justify"> I don't know if it is lag from being ill last week or what, but I am struggling with my concentration at the moment. Struggling more than usual, that is. My focus is definitely not what it used to be, and I am wondering at what point does it impact so much, that I am unable to do anything productive at all. I guess at some point, I am just useless - *valueless.* At lunch with colleagues, we were discussing the value of paintings and how otherwise similar artworks, can have very different values that people are willing to pay. The "recognition" of the artist of course came into the conversation, but what I think a lot of people miss is that the recognition isn't usually about the art itself, but rather, from peer group reputation. For an artist to become well-known enough and increase their work evaluations, they generally need advocates in the industry, insiders who are willing to say "check this person out" to people who are willing and able to take a risk and invest. If an artist is unable to make it into those kinds of networks and get advocacy for their art, no amount of artistic skill is going to be enough. Of course, "quality" still matters, because there has to be something that is engaging enough to compel the advocate to advertise forward. If there is nothing there to engage with, they have no reason to provide advocacy, as there is no payoff. Being an advocate might not come with financial reward, but there is still incentive through reputation, which is why a lot of corporations are very careful with who they provide advocacy for. A person who advocates for an artist is also putting their reputation on the line too, and they will be judged for it. At a lower level, it is like saying "I like this band" to a group of friends, where the risk is that they will find the same band trash. > Eye of the beholder? They say that the value of a piece of art is in the eye of the beholder, but this is not necessarily true, because there are trends that drive that eye. Just like with music, there are different styles of art, and some are going to attract certain types of audiences that are willing to pay a lot, whilst others might attract far more of an audience, of people not willing to pay very much. When it comes to investing into art with the goal of increasing wealth, scarcity is still one of the key factors. This means that the art has to be something unusual enough in style or topic that few people offer it. It can be replicated, but people will always *overpay* for originality. What constitutes "original" might be up for debate, but I believe that the range of diversity is decreasing, and becoming more homogenous, as we consume far more, far faster, and replicate to a greater degree. Not only that, the barrier to create has come down, meaning that more people have access to the tools of creation and get the feeling that they are making something unique, even if what they are doing is actually just an amalgamation of the work of others. A lot of the AI generated artwork is like this - anyone can do it, meaning that it is largely valueless. >Why pay when the cost to do ourselves is so low? When it comes to something like food, there is a convenience factor associated, where we are willing to even eat lower quality, as long as it is fast. A colleague said today that they do not make food at home that takes them longer to cook, than to eat. So, what does that do to their range of cooking at home, and what does it mean for when they go to a restaurant? With such a range of food available made be professionals at a relatively cost effective price, how many people are willing to learn how to cook a wide range of food at home? Can you make a decent Thai curry, sushi, a great steak, an apple pie? Why go to all the effort of learning anything, when it is unlikely going to come close to matching the skills of the professionals? We have access to so much variation in content, that the skill of learning has become almost valueless itself, because we know that we aren't able to compete with the pros. In the past, there was the chance to be a ghetto superstar, known in the city, playing gigs, or selling some art locally. Now, there are mass platforms that open us up to a global audience, but we also have to compete with a global audience. Putting music on Spotify, means competing with Taylor Swift for attention. Putting a piece of art onto a platform, means competing with AI-generation. And, the irony is, that the more we consume of this convenient content, the less likely we are to create - especially anything of quality. Because, to create something quality takes more than talent, it also takes practice and dedication, and as we are constantly consuming, our own ability to spend time and attention lessens, and we are unable to improve enough, to get advocacy. > It is a downward spiral. Of course, we might not notice it that much yet, because we feel that there is a growing amount of content being created, which is true, because there is more than we can ever consume. However, human nature is what it is, and too much to consume means, not enough space to find and support much else. While people are paying thousands to go to an international concert for the experience, the experience of local artists is that there aren't many eyes left for them. Maybe at some point people will turn back to more bespoke content, but at the moment, there is far more drive for convenient content that is easy to consume, that scratches the itch of spending time, even if it is not time well spent. People want to be in the in-group, be part of the masses, but get the feeling that they are unique - which is a strange contradiction, in my opinion. > Do what everyone else does, but feel unique doing it. There is money in it. Not too sure about value. Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] </div> Posted Using [InLeo Alpha](https://inleo.io/@tarazkp/hanging-out)

Of course quality still matters not only for artworks but for any content we create. But like you said, building connections with people who can help the creator advocate his content to others is a little more important. That's why no content creator makes it on his own without building connections with the right people, no matter how skilled they are. I hope you recover soon from the lag and regain your focus and concentration. Taking some rest might help in fixing that, if not then some drugs. Thanks for writing and have a great week.

I've had a couple of nights lately where I have been so tired that I feel like I may have written some quite weird comments on some Hive posts. I'll type something up and then be like "wait, why did I type that". Art is interesting as well. I think you need to find value in what it means to you. Whether it be a song or a painting. I'm sure there are tons of paintings that the experts feel are amazing, but in my eyes, they may as well of had a dog crap on a canvas. Like you said, the monetary value would be the fact that someone says it is, but the personal value could be far different.

That is pretty tired. I know the feeling though and I am sure I do the same from time to time, and then think - "how is that related?" My dad once did a portrait where the canvas was about 5 feet high - but the girl in the portrait was about an inch high. It was commissioned by her parents, and they absolutely loved it. Someone else would say "that's not a portrait".

> some are going to attract certain types of audiences that are willing to pay a lot, whilst others might attract far more of an audience, of people not willing to pay very much. This sums up the NYC club scene so perfectly. The artists who get the top billing are the ones whose crowds drink the most (sad but true). This means the clubs favor house and techno music on most Friday and Saturday nights because they do a bunch of blow and binge drink. Sadly the EDM I prefer, downtempo bass and dubstep is about more of a journey than an experience. We are relegated to Thursdays and Sundays because stereotypically, this community is more about smoking weed and doing trippy stuff, which does not help the club's bottom line at the bar. But so it goes, this is the sad reality of the industry in NYC.

I have experienced this in various ways. It is hard here to get space for salsa dancing on a Friday or Saturday night, because salsa people don't drink much, because it kills their ability to dance. The "parties" are often Mondays.

My value scale and the alocated training hours for a skill is something like this: Average - 100 hours Excellent - 1000 hours Mastery - 10.000 hours Virtuosity (World class) - lifetime The thing is, in terms of money, is better to achieve a skill mastery, and then sell the skill, and use the money to buy other people mastery creations, just thinking about quality and time. What if may take you a whole day, to create an excelent product, another who achieved mastery can do in one hour, and you can make more in one day doing your own mastery creation to cover that hour payment and such. Jacks of all trades are useful, but not leaders in their field.

I think your scenario brings up the point of donating time, or money. Some people think that donating money is less valuable than donating time, because it is impersonal. However, if a person is very good at making money, they can donate and hire people who can spend their time. At a personal level though, I think there is value in being able to be good enough at something, like handiwork around the house. However, also be able to pay professionals for the important tasks, like plumbing and electricity.

The only issue is that you need to know what you can fix and what you need to call 'the man' for it. Having a problem with this will cost you a lot of money. But then, most of the problems got decent video tutorials on youtube these days. I can unblock or repair a toilet or a door lock, but I will call a professional to put carpet my floor. Even if I can do it, it will take me a lot longer and the quality will be questionable.

I think modern art is a bit of a joke for the most part. Not because of the art or the style, but that a lot of the prices are inflated. Most of this is for tax evasion or laundering money. But there are also a lot of modern art that are just plain stupid. Here is one website that lists a few of them: https://luxurylaunches.com/auctions/9-pieces-of-art-ridiculously-sold-for-millions.php

If one person creates a very beautiful painting using AI, I will consider it high art. Yes, this can be repeated. But if a person makes an NFT out of this painting, it will be the same valuable painting as in past centuries.

I disagree - the art is in the program, not the output. The output has no thought behind it, no art, no journey. Art requires experience in my opinion, and the AI has none.

Art as a profession or income you depend on has always been a contradiction in my mind. I have always figured that everyone should be an artist and a creator for what it does for your brain, your experience, your whole being. I know some people make a living with art, acting, painting, music and such but what does that actually look like? Since the barriers to entry and learning are less and less, then the company/competition in that area is going to be greater too. Because someone has the aptitude and the motivation to explore and develop that talent doesnβt constitute the decision to abandon other income making ability. Sure it takes a huge amount of focus to rise above and make it in anything, especially to walk down paths less travelled as far as livelihood goes. That path is less travelled for a reason. One of the best ways to turn something fun and fulfilling in the process into a grind is to measure it by how much money it makes you. A friend made a joke the other day that artists exist on toast and tears. Play sports, be an artist, be active and social, figure out how to successfully make money to support those endeavours and see where that takes you. As far as supply and demand goes, there is definitely an increasing level of both with the internet connecting the globe. Plus, that convenience is turning us all into convenient consumers so we have to force ourselves to be purveyors and creators of art or else our attention will be stolen away by the next impulse.

I feel that one of the things that has unbalanced society, is that people largely don't create anything with their hands of value. In the past, everyone had to make something. >. One of the best ways to turn something fun and fulfilling in the process into a grind is to measure it by how much money it makes you. I agree with this! It is why so many people fail to maintain consistency on Hive - they look at the dollar value, and think creating isn't worth it. Then they drop their quality, so it doesn't even meet their own standards. >Plus, that convenience is turning us all into convenient consumers so we have to force ourselves to be purveyors and creators of art or else our attention will be stolen away by the next impulse. For sure. Life is passing us by, while we watch other people play.
