<div class="text-justify"> Over the last week I have had the opportunity to observe many people I have known for a long time in a new habitat and under new conditions. It is interesting to watch how people change under various pressures and then, notice some of the same changes in myself. I am not immune to stress, but once I recognize its presence, I am able to mitigate it as a passing feeling and then carry on. Once it has been identified, it loses its power to control me because I am now aware of its presence. I think many people spend the time worrying about the stress as if it is an issue, so then, it becomes an issue, it becomes a focus point and because it is unpleasant, they try to avoid the feeling. Avoidance is like running away from a tiger, you do not control the direction other than, *away.* Focusing on what is chasing you means not being able to focus on where you are actually going, as a lot of energy is spent looking backwards. I don't know if you have noticed this but I think that you would in other people if observing them. If you see someone waling down the street and you think they look depressed, in which direction are their eyes pointing? What about if you see someone looking confident? Next time you are walking down the street, try to pay attention to your mental state and where your are generally pointing. What you might notice is that when you are looking downward, you are probably in a worse mood, more closed off and reflecting on past, something that happened to you, or you did. When in a better mood, you will look more eyeline and be far more observant of the world around you. At least, that is what it is in my experience. What I have noticed of late is that people (and likely myself) are finding it harder to concentrate and focus, it seems more difficult to spend time on one focal point with eyes moving much more than usual. I think this is because many people have a lot of things on their plate and mind, much of which they haven't dealt with earlier. Many things, much uncertainty - so their mind is wandering and cycling from topic to topic without being able to hold for an extended period of time what they might actually have to focus on. It is interesting because in general and what might seem counter-intuitive to many, the cure to stress is work. Accomplishing what needs to be done reduces stress, avoidance will postpone and wind up increasing it, as eventually, it will have to be done anyway, often with less time and resources - so higher stress. So many people feel that stress is something negative when I believe that it can be a positive force, something that indicates that we are challenged. While too much is obviously counter-productive, just enough and the flow state can be achieved - and just like lifting weights at a gym, the more the challenge is met, the easier it gets and the higher the weight can be increased. This is a large part of the reason that there can be such large differences in how people act and react under stress, with those who are accustomed to it, having a higher tolerance and resilience. This means that they can behave normally and consistently for longer, and therefore both deal with whatever is at hand, as well as take opportunities that others do not even see, as they are looking down at their feet or unable to focus. I wrote a piece about having disposable income and resources to invest in the bad times, however the most valuable resource that we have at our disposal is ourselves and our mind and body. Some people have energy in surplus to meet the world come what may, others continually shrink away, chased by the pressure into whatever corner they can find to feel safe. There is one thing that is certain in all of this however, no one else can live our experience for us, so we best find ways to cope and deal as conditions are always changing and the weather is rarely fair. I have a similar problem. During meditation, my thoughts, instead of focusing on breathing, offer me everything, but not what I planned in advance. Because of this, I began to struggle with this. I practice mindfulness and monotasking (doing only one thing, exclude the moments when I want to "Combine several classes at once"). "Combine several classes at once" - the most important enemy!!!

Lately I have been stressed, but there is nothing you can do but remain positive. Shutting a business down for 3 weeks or more is not my idea of fun. I think you do what you can and remain positive as everyone is in a similar position and possibly worse off. I must admit I do look at body language more and more these days as it gives away so much. I have tried to come across as positive as possible as someone who is negative is attracted to those signals. It is a hard act sometimes but as you say once you identify it you can overcome the stress and worry.

Yes, I agree. Empty mind is the home to stress. You go into the past and start regretting about stuff that went bad. While many people are quarantined at home, they should engage themselves in tasks that keep mind occupied. Read books, play games, exercise, play with children and engage with people around you inside the house.

I think for a lot of the people like myself who are working remotely, there is additional stresses by the changed routines, and then having a toddler to contend with. Finding things to do isn't an issue on this end :)

With what I've noticed for myself it depends on the time of day and whether or not I'm wearing sunnies XD I always have my head up when out because I need to look out for things but because of how my stupid eyes and ears work daytime can be occasionally uncomfortable (too bright and too loud) so I look down slightly even when I'm in a bouncy mood because it's blinding otherwise XD I don't think too many people are used to this pandemic stress though.

I don't like bright lights either due to my weird eyes. I would much rather live in a cave. I am a night owl though. When looking up, there is a lot more information to take in, giving less time and energy to think.

True that man. Something that has really been a huge part of my path is realizing that those little physical manifestations of our mental state are part of a feedback loop ie. When we are depressed our shoulders sag, our posture suffers and this actually signals to our brains to be more depressed. The great thing about this is that you can break a feedback loop anywhere in the chain, so if we make ourselves aware of these physical changes and simply change them back to a more optimal response we can change our mental state and use that feedback loop to our own advantage. The most obvious example is when they talk about laughter and smiling and itโs affect on the emotions. The more body awareness we gain the more of these physical manifestations we can see and control. The breath is one of the biggest, (B.K.S. Iyengar said โcontrol the breath, control the mindโ), and even the heart rate can be controlled with enough awareness and practice. This principle is one of the reasons yoga is so powerful, but itโs actually even more powerful to use this technique in daily life. When I first started noticing this correlation, whenever I became aware that my posture was in a depressed/introverted position I would just do โThe Fonzeโ, Aye!๐ (There should really be a Fonze emoji...)

Sometimes I feel like writers see right through my invisible neuro pathways. So much of what you have highlighted here is me. Though I have always leaned towards avoidance, I am finding myself nowadays fighting back with springs of determination finding footing in my soul. Using the fuel that comes with the uncertainty to find certainty if you know what I mean. Awesome read โก

>Using the fuel that comes with the uncertainty to find certainty if you know what I mean. I do indeed. I reckon that once taking control of the self, other things become easier to handle, and what can't be handled, easier to accept. One of the things I feel I have influence over is, no matter what happens in the world, I will do my best to find a way through.
