If it looks like a duck
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like duck it is probably: ***Spam.***

The idea is a simple test and heuristic that quickly identifies an unknown based on its similarities to what is already known. I have got, continue to get and will likely always get a lot of Spam comments on my blog posts. I have got a little lazy lately but, be warned I am going to start flagging them more.

https://i.imgur.com/yT9tp48.jpg

Even for the new members here who 'don't know' it is inappropriate, there is so much information available that they should have already read on the subject that perhaps through enough flags, they will start investigating. I try to write something quickly if I haven't seen the poster before but, I don't always have time to spend on cleaning spam comments.

Anyway, today I got a comment that had a big picture attached from a recent regular poster. Her last few comments have had similar. *I* don't like them. I don't mind a signature picture I see regularly but, these are not that. I mentioned it saying they are more annoying than helpful and, she took some offence and felt that I shouldn't be annoyed nor try to change her. I understand her, I don't like being criticised either and I am not likely to change for anyone except my daughter. But, I will review information as it comes.

*(As a note, I spoke to her in DM in steemit.chat and explained why which doesn't appear on the blockchain)*

But, this is what I explained. It looks a lot like all the other spam and at the very best, is attention seeking behaviour that isn't looking for my attention (as I read, comment and upvote on her regularly), it is looking for the attention of others that visit my posts.

I didn't go into details about this but, hijacking someone's comment section is kind of like guerrila marketing to screw over your best friend's business.

But, when something looks like Spam, it will get treated as such and even though not many are likely to flag it, it is also that they are unlikely to read it either which, defeats the purpose of the tactic to get the so sought after attention. The strategy is flawed in many ways as now you have likely annoyed the article poster or been tagged as an attention seeker trying to undercut them or, a spammer. Not a lot of good comes out of any scenario really.

I do understand that some people are looking for attention but, at least for me, this isn't an 'all publicity is good publicity' environment. Having the 'seen at all costs' mentality is likely going to get you pegged as a low quality poster as the comments you make are also representative of your content.

What she said in chat is that she is trying some different approaches and I commend her a lot for it and wish many more would experiment a little. But, if you are going to experiment, take the time to see what *'really isn't working'* for other people.

If you dress yourself up like a beggar in the street, many are going to treat you as such no matter what you know or what value you could bring to them. I can't see you, I don't know you, I do not know your background or what your intentions are, but if you look, walk and quack like a duck in the comments sections, you will get treated as such as I will spend my time on the people who comment well without the feeling of them having an ulterior motive to use the comments section of my post as advertising space.

You may not agree with this, you may have lots of excuses and reasons as to why you do this or that but, it is unlikely to sway me very much as in all likelihood, I have heard them all before.

If you stepped onto the platform for the first time without prior knowledge, would you find your comments or replies engaging, would you want to know more about the author? What happens if nearly everything you see looks like comment spam, will you read each one to discern the intentions of the poster and whether they are actually spamming or not or, will you soon only read the ones that are most likely not Spam?

The *Hustle & Grind* need not look like *Spam & attention seeker*.

Just as a reminder: ***I am going to start flagging known Spam again.*** If you do not know what Spam is, use the search and find one of the 10,000 articles written every month about it.

There's nothing more disheartening then to spend a lot of time carefully writing your post, publishing it and seeing that more than half the comments are just some generic line of spam.

I don't really mind if people leave short comments, as long as it adds something unique to the conversation.
Flagging them seems fair, that's why the option is there.

Btw, as a newbie, I'd like to know how upvoting your own comments is perceived? Is it something that shouldn't be done or just in some cases?

Sometimes I feel it is better to ignore these comments. Probably you will have the same person commenting on every single post of yours the same way. Once they realize that you ignored them, they will stop after a while.
But flagging is also a good option to get rid of spammers in this platform.

Does this count as reconstituted meat?

![spam.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcdvMnnQqXiUhRqaxjNJNygppAPDyKGdmWVqZKw4afYET/spam.jpeg)

At the very least it has a spicy twist :)

But, and I know a gal shouldn't start a sentence with this word, I agree with your article.

It must be frustrating when you have reached a certain level through solid grind to have folks ride on your back seeking attention with showy comments.

That said ~ I couldn't help myself or perhaps I should say;

*The devil made me do it!*

I don't mind people gaining from the comments section at all as long as they are part of the discussion here and not blatantly asking for support.

I always just thought of those big graphic comments as obnoxious and cheap but never really considered them to be self-promoting, hijacking or guerrilla marketing techniques. However now that you say that, I completely see your point. That's interesting.

I have noticed that spamming comments have decreased somewhat in the past few months but maybe people are just adapting and finding new creative ways to spam that are less obvious. Thanks for pointing this out

I'd like to see a mechanism where the author sets a minumum rep required to comment. It would no doubt attract some big celebrities who are sick of low value trolls on other sites. It'd also incentivise people to safeguard their reputation score.

This will be a nice feature, although hopefully the required reputation will not be so high. After all, some new ones may really have something very genuine to share/say. Yet, I do agree that we need to safeguard our reputation score here in the community. Sadly, not all are aware (or if they happen to be aware, they don't bother to care). *Maybe there's a lack of repercussions?*

That'd be up to each author to decide. You might leave yours at 25, which is fine.
I probably would too. Halle Berry might want to push hers up to 50, and Ashton Kutcher might go for 60; there would still be thousands of articles to build a reputation on.

Great idea, but I've run into spammy commenters with a rep of 53... truly brilliant stuff like, *"It's interesting to know something interesting from you..."*

Seems that commenting in high numbers, regardless of quality, counters the purpose of the reputation system... :-/

Then again, your idea would still filter out a ton of the trash! ☺

It may also incentivise us to bother with the flagging. Ol mate 53 hasn't been flagged enough, because those who may have considered it didn't want to waste their vp on a futile gesture.

What I also noticed is that there are a bunch of people who will comment regularly on your post, not just in a spammy fashion, in the hope of getting upvotes on their comments but never upvote the post that they are commenting on. I monitor this behaviour on steemd or steemblockexplorer, stop rewarding them and they quickly disappear to go and pester someone else.

It's sad how some people think that advertising and spamming on someone else's comment section will get them votes and popularity. The mentality of "there is no such thing as negative publicity" needs to go away. People should learn what works and what doesn't. Ask themselves if they would respond the same way if someone else spammed.

@daan ·
I think spamming might just work well for them if they find enough authors that will upvote every comment, regardless if it's any good or not.

Imagine if person A spends one hour on Steemit and in that time-frame, he manages to write about 20 - 25 short spam comments. How much would he earn?

Person B on the other hand reads every post he comments on and takes the time to write an in-depth response. He'll maybe get around 5 to 10 comments done in an hour. Will he earn more than person A?

I think that person A would earn the most, just because there are many authors that will just upvote *any* comment. It's sad indeed, but as long as people don't curate their comment section, it's not going to change.

**Do note that the number I'm using as examples are completely arbitrary, some people might be able to write more than 20 comments in under an hour. (speed readers, etc :P)

Don't understand the use of spamming in comments. Do they really get upvotes for "great post, follow me"? Doubt it can be enough to warrant the effort needed for this.

Maybe what is needed is a I am human test every 5 comments or something along those lines to make sure software isn't making the same comment over and over.

One I have noticed a lot lately is pulling one photo from the post and saying something like "I like this photo the best" or "great photo".

Anyways please flag away and crush the spammers. Just maybe a few will surrender.

>If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like duck it is probably: Spam.

You reeled me in with that one. Never saw the "Spam" coming. It hit me in the face like a can of Spam.

Yeah, there are a lot of ways to spam people on Steemit. You can post garbage in their comment section in the hope of getting noticed. You can send them 0.001 SBD to their wallet with a message (If you're not followers, follow Linkdin or Facebook's example and charge a higher fee for the privilege). You can post garbage and/or porn and hope that it catches someone's eye. However you look at it, it's a magician's trick, all an illusion and then it's gone.

There's no substance. There's no real content, it's just a temporary attention-grab. It's someone asking for change outside the grocery store. They just want a handout, not a relationship. Eventually it gets annoying. I'm sorry to hear you've been pushed to the point where you're going to start flagging. Not that I blame you. Not that spam doesn't deserve it, but it's just sad to see people get abused like that.

On a current poem, two members tagged each other in greeting but left no comment on my post. I agree that this is not proper behavior yet haven't ever flagged a comment yet. Thank you for addressing the issue again.

There are so many weird actions people take thinking that they are of value. I am likely blind to much of my own nonsense too perhaps.

When notifications were working, it was more common people would tag users to 'share' a post of interest but, there is no real need for it at this time. In my opinion, they should at least leave a comment though anyway.

I agree... And I wish notifications worked so that I could automatically know who's paying me. I do like the Gina bot because I can scroll through that feed in Discord and catch actions that I've missed. It is kind of hard to keep abreast of all that's going on if you live a very busy lifestyle like most of us do.

Very well written :)

Just check out my newest post [Here]() please

Haha sorry, I could not resist. I completely agree with you. I am still quite new around these parts and I am sure I do not get the same amount of spam comments as you do, but already I get quite annoyed by all the either default generic comments or the straight up not post relates comments asking for follow4follow vote for vote where it is clear that they did not even take the time to read the post.
Luckily I have not yet encountered any comments trying to take the shine away from others comments by using banners, so I got that going for me... which is nice.

Anyway, thank you for another good read
