<div class="text-justify"> A slightly different workday today, because we are moving offices and there is "no office" to work in at the moment. So, instead of just working from home, three of us went to a fourth colleague's house to work instead, which was great! I am not sure how productive we were in terms of what we were meant to be doing for work, but we got a lot of other work done, had a nice lunch together at a local shopping center and ended the day with a sauna and a chat. >A good day. A good thing about having decent hiring practices is that I get to work with people I actually like *as people* and don't mind spending personal time with them also. At least most of them. One of the approaches to hiring in the organization in Finland is through referrals. A job opening arises, it is announced internally and then people are able to recommend those they think are suitable. If they get chosen, there is even a decent "referral" reward. There are a lot of benefits to this, as there is a network of trust involved, that goes in several directions. For instance, I was referred five years ago by the person whose house we visited today, who is someone I used to work with in a previous job. They referred me, which means that they are staking their judgement and some kind of reputation on me with the person who is hiring and will interview me. If I am decent (even if I don't get the job), their reputation is intact, but if I am not suitable at all, their judgement will get questioned. This means that people don't refer candidates who they don't trust. However, trust also goes the other way, where not only am I being referred for the position, but the position is being referred to me. This means that my friend is also staking their reputation with me. If the job is unsuitable, or if I get it and the company is terrible, again they are going to have their judgement questioned. But, if get the job, I go into the position "pre-approved" in the sense that *a friend of my friend is likely to be a friend too.* There is a small network to lean on, and because of the trust exchanged throughout the process and the friend of a friend conditions, onboarding and internal networking is far easier, as there is already some modicum of trust built - trust via proxy. >Is this cronyism? # No. >cronyism /ˈkrəʊnɪɪz(ə)m/ noun DEROGATORY the appointment of friends and associates to positions of authority, without proper regard to their qualifications. But, to those who aren't *in the know,* it can seem a lot like cronyism, can't it? It is easy to make the assumption that a position, especially a promotion that leverages these networks later in a career, is down to "being friends" with the right people alone. However, that *outside looking in* view doesn't consider the qualifications, nor the track record that has built up trust over time - it only sees the end result. And what is interesting is that often people don't seem to appreciate that building up the internal network, trust and social capital, is not only for getting a promotion, it is for *getting shit done.* For example, one of the people today is in my team and we work closely at times when things overlap. However, if he or I need some help from each other, we go out of our way to help, because we each have stake in the other in some way and also know that having the network is valuable for us later too. I might be the one helping today, but next week, he will have my back. Through this kind of interaction, we not only build trust, but get experience seeing each other in action, which means when it comes to promoting internally, he will get my advocacy *if* I believe the job he is going for is suitable, because my recommendation is still going to carry some level of trust in my judgement. If I just support because I like him with no regard to qualifications, it will damage my reputation too. It is funny in some way, because a healthy community is on that includes a decent amount of trust that *isn't blind.* So in a corporate culture, they should be trying to build trusted relationships and where people feel an adequate level of concern and accountability for others in the organization. But, this is one of the reasons that communities are failing, because there is very little social capital and trust built up directly with other members. Instead, we have created a society of strangers, where we pay people for their expertise to fulfil our needs, with very little social accountability involved. We trust the reviews of strangers we have never and will never meet, because we don't have a wide enough network of trusted people surrounding us. >Fake reviews don't work well between friends. And I think that this is something that we should consider when we are making decisions based on the opinions of others. Do we trust the information they give, and *why* do we trust the information they give. Are they qualified, do they have a good track record, have we benefited or been burned by them before? What have we got to lose? What have they got to lose? Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] </div>

Those are some really hard questions to answer at the end there. Especially in the educational field where new hires are at an all time low. It's difficult find qualified individuals, you are more lucky to find a warm body to fill a seat.

Outside of office world too, things are more connected and networked than general perceiving "it's not". Valuable and synchronized networks are hard to build because we are dealing with different consciousnesses, that means multiple unique behaviours have to come together to build a strong network, that's why in real world we see very few network circles long-lasts.

>It is funny in some way, because a healthy community is on that includes a decent amount of trust that isn't blind. So in a corporate culture, they should be trying to build trusted relationships and where people feel an adequate level of concern and accountability for others in the organization. Here the question is: do you really believe that society is "healthy" for possessing a certain level of trust in others...? I think not at all. Let me explain why. In societies as well as in companies or organizations, the drive to dominate and embrace everything is too aggressive and marked... Maybe I am wrong, but at least that has been my experience. Excellent work, dude.

One of the things my dad taught me years ago which has served me well is the notion of “it’s not exactly what you know but who you know” and it’s been pretty important. I’m not the most brilliant person on the team and I certainly have to work hard at what I’m doing but I also make it a point to get to know and collaborate with a lot of people in my day to day. Even now with my role people move around and I worked with a manager the other day that I worked closely for a year or more and she changed roles in the company. Out of blue I needed help with something and I asked a resource who then included her as an FYI to see if she could help. She immediately said hello and asked me how things were going when she saw who was reaching out for assistance and we got it squared away in 20 minutes what may have taken 2-3 days if it was someone she didn’t know or never worked with before. If we can combine some decent people skills with decent knowledge and technical skills we are likely to make a lot more connections and assistance from people than if we are isolated. I also try to be nice to everyone! There are some people that are shit bags and you can’t help that but it’s good practice because you never know when you’ll be on the other side of them for what ever reason - now or in 1-5 years. That’s really cool that you got to do something completely different and get some work done at the colleagues house. It’s more about the collaboration than it is about the work. That’s one thing I do miss from an office space but I’m enjoying remote work for sure.

The ever-present struggle that comes with recommending a friend or relative for a position in your company! Before you began unpacking the back-and-forth of this model of hiring, I was barely through the second paragraph and was gently moaning to myself of the potential dangers of such adventures, however, I will concede that there are definitely benefits for adopting this manner of hiring too, and I appreciate the perspective you gave to the subject. As you indicated, there's a great burden of responsibility when it comes to recommending and being recommended for a position, and I guess, as the person doing the recommending, you'd want to have a lot of faith in the person you're recommending, and, not just their ability to perform the position well, but their character also. The perspective offered in your post about the accountability that is forged in such a process is something that is probably lacking from a lot of workplaces, and while I'd not actually considered how this would look in the case of promotion, you've summed it up nicely.

>I will concede that there are definitely benefits for adopting this manner of hiring too, There are many risks, which is why it works well when it works. Finland is a pretty small country, so everyone knows everyone within a couple degrees of separation. I think that is why there is also a fair amount of trust here and, people generally do a pretty good job. Screw up too much and the circles are small. >not just their ability to perform the position well, but their character also. Yes. and this is even more important now when "corporate culture" is a thing they aim to build. The wrong people can kill a team fast.

I remember the time when some of the fathers friends were recommending the job close to home for me. I denied knowing my father as hitler figure even to date. It was kind of like trap, you'd never get out of house by working in same city. I denied a lot of such job offers, sure, I suffered either way as my stars were meant for suffering. But sometimes denying saves a lot. I prefer those machine generated recommendations these days. We get matched with the business based on our past and current skills. AI is going to be doing a good job in this context and may replace traditional recruiters.

Sounds like this is a great company to work for. I wonder if we could successfully adopt this model into some charter schools. I think it would be a good benefit to the kids and would help partner teachers immensely.

That would be a good idea, instead, in our work, as government work, we cannot hire people for the last 2 years, as they are either not prepared, and they do not like the low pay and long hours when you start.

From my point of view, as an employer, what I am looking for in the first place is a person with professional competencies to fill the position I need and fulfill their functions. In the times we are living in, it is difficult to find competent people who are also responsible and serious about what they do. I find the idea you mention interesting and I have even applied it on occasions. A network of friends would be very good, because in this way we can count on friends with professional competences and also with seriousness and commitment, then we will have a good team of collaborators. Greetings and thank you for allowing me to reflect on the subject.

Power of network is really important and powerful as well! The stronger the network the more good people we are usually surrounded with. And it's great. Both in terms of "help when in need of a work/something" but also in terms of spending time with them. And when the two goes together, well, that's a gift!

Referral hires are a big thing in the Philippines as well. The process you mentioned is a good one, but there are also referrals by higher ups that tend to be bad for the team as a whole. They are already labeled as untouchable, and there are times when they underperform and you can't do anything about it. Apart from referral hires, getting from other teams often have a similar effect [operations support to a DBA/SYSAD]. Your team might have interacted with them a lot, and you already know they are a good fit to the team.

> Instead of just working from home, three of us went to a fourth colleague's house to work instead, which was great! In my last job at [AdaCore](https://www.adacore.com/company), I was working from home in Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver. Another French guy, Joel, was also working from home in Vancouver. Every week, one day I would go to Vancouver to work in Joel's apartment, and another day, Joel would come to my place to work. Even though we were not working in the same area, we would talk to each other about the problems we had. Often just explaining a problem the solution would appear miraculously without any reply from the other guy. > One of the approaches to hiring in the organization in Finland is through referrals. This is the kind of company I like. In the three companies I worked for after the French Navy, some people knew me and trusted me, so I had no problem being hired.
