As a parent, I am grateful when birthday presents for my child are something useful, rather than something that is going to take up space, but barely be used. It can be kind of hard these days though, as there is a lot of random stuff on offer, and a lot of kid activities are through screens. But, my friends and family know what Smallsteps is like, so they tend to get her things that are experiences or, activities that she can dive into.

A rock painting kit arrived in the mail a couple days back and tonight, as my wife is out for a colleague's birthday, Smallsteps and I dived into it. painting can of course be a little messy, but with some sheets of newspaper laid on the dining table, and a shirt that is a little too small now, we managed to keep it all relatively clean.

It was a lot of fun and while we didn't finish all we started, we got a good start on a red ladybird and a silver hedgehog, and we will do some more tomorrow when my wife can take part also. It is funny, because once my wife starts doing something like this, she gets all serious about it and really tries to create something good. I think adults should try creating stuff more often, because it has knock-on effects for other parts of life.

It doesn't have to be creating something good even, just getting the creative juices flowing. I think if more people spent time creating something with their hands, rather than just consuming something with their eyes, they would be far better off in quality of life.

None of these rocks are going to win a prize, but skills are developed over time and the interest to build them starts from somewhere. Too often I find parents these days relying on screens to entertain their children, and still expecting that when they grow up, they are going to have all the skills necessary to navigate their lives. I am not just talking about employable skills, but also the social and emotional skills also. 

Like the patience required waiting for the paint to dry.

It's good practice on the eve of Thanksgiving, as it makes it easier to paint and decorate the eggs. I love activities that involve the whole family.

Rock painting is pretty big over here. People leave them in random places and put happy messages on them for other people to find. It's a whole thing. I remember when I was a kid I got a rock tumbler and it was the coolest thing. I still have it kicking around somewhere.  I should break it out and polish some stones sometime!

What a nice little gift. We used to do little projects like this with our boys. I miss it. 

As for doing work with your hands, I think it leaves you feeling fulfilled as well. More so than sitting in front of a TV.

That is pretty interesting. Out of context, it is a bit funny though. I can imagine smallsteps getting asked what she got for her birthday, and her reply of 'rocks' with a smiling face just confuses the one who asked. I do think that kids should experience all sorts of things while they're young. I bet she will look back on rock painting with a smile on her face.

Excellent project to get into and what a great birthday gift!   By her smile I think she is enjoying it.    The kids did that around here awhile back, they would paint a design or inspirational message and then hide the rocks around town for random people to find.   I found one in the crook of a tree in the park and one on a shopping cart at the grocery store.    I then left them on the table of a restaurant and in the parking lot.   

Not enough emphasis on creativity in school these days.     Kids should be taught how to think instead of what to think.

That is a great idea! I might get Smallsteps to make some random ones to do the same and perhaps brighten the day of a stranger she will never meet. :)

This is something I try to do a lot with Smallsteps, where we just discuss things and come up with ideas and reasons for why and how things work in the world. A lot of random conversations, but hopefully it leads to her being able to think through her experience, rather than be a victim of it.
