Jumping tracks
In a client session today we spent time talking about the future of employment, our children's possible place in the world, gaming, the economy and dealing with stress. It was a pretty filled two hours but all of these things are kind of related in various ways.

https://i.imgur.com/eaDzgJa.jpg

Last night I was talking with a university lecturer with a young son about 10 years of age and while he is hoping for him to start playing an instrument at some point, all his son is interested in doing is gaming and is unable to focus if given tasks that he doesn't want to do. He noted that the adults he teaches have the same problem and start fidgeting as soon as the phone is 20 seconds out of their hands. Even when he designs classes that are supported through the screen, they don't use it. It isn't the device, it is their ability to concentrate on what they don't want to concentrate on.

What kinds of employees will they make when for *any job* there is a spectrum of what is enjoyable to learn to what is tedious if they are only able to concentrate on what they want? How can one learn the piano without going through the basics, the mistakes, the hardship of various kinds and, why would anyone put themselves into learning a difficult skill when the same emotional feedback can be garnered from a game in moments?

You might say of course that no one needs to be oppressed by being an employee anyway and that they can find other activities they enjoy which is fair enough. However, when it comes to earning income, there is a competitive advantage issue that comes into play and if there are billions of people who enjoy playing games, what are their chances of earning? But this isn't even the largest issue, what about meaning and purpose?

Sure, while one is immersed in the game getting the rush of endorphins, dopamine and serotonin into their system as feedback for completing micro-tasks of little consequence with a low barrier of entry, all is well. What about the rest of life or is that it? The amount of times I have heard people say things along the lines of, *"I don't know what I am doing with my life"* is high. People know they want more from their life but, don't know what that means so instead bury themselves in cheap high entertainment avoidance.

What happens when people only feel the satisfaction of life when they are playing a game or buying something? What happens to their health, body, self-esteem? Do they feel good if they put on 10 kilos, do they like to be naked in front of their partners, is every gut suck in a photo a reminder of poor condition? Sure, love yourself *just the way you are,* right?

People try to buy happiness and in this country 'fast loans' are on a very steep rise. This is a highly educated and stable economy where pretty much anyone can get a credit card. Why would quick loans be on the rise unless the people had already exhausted their line of credit? My wife and I drove around a new and growing suburb the other day filled with dozens of very large houses that most people can't afford. This isn't a rich area, it is just that the interest rates are low. Buying is another type of feedback for life, a way to build self-esteem - *retail therapy* in the extreme.

The crash is coming isn't it? The economic collapse that will again expose the flaws of the system and what we keep ignoring, the flaws in our own buying behavior, *every decision we make.* We are increasingly unhappy in the world yet we keep teaching our kids to be like us, we send them to a school that celebrates average to learn the same things that didn't make us happy nor are going to be adequate for an automated future.

Training them to be irrelevant and before they even have a chance to discover their talents to find meaning, immersing them into virtual environments that give them the feedback loop of skill acquisition without actually possessing anything useful.

That is fine of course because there is unlikely to be enough jobs to go around anyway so instead of training everyone to compete, we can hamstring the majority early so only those who *really want it* will buck the trend of average avoidance and get real skills. That way the unemployable majority can live off a basic income that provides food, a roof and an internet connection to take their mind off their increasingly poor shape, loneliness and lack of meaning in their life.

It all sounds a little bit *Black Mirror* doesn't it?
please don't give spoilers, I ma several seasons behind but one day...

In Finland there are rules about what types of stocks retirement investment firms can invest in which is basically, blue chip and Finnish. There aren't that many in the country so money has been pouring into them driving the value of the stocks up but there is no major increase in business activity. What happens when the markers are called back in, what interest rates rise a fraction and set off a domino collapse across housing markets, employment, investments, trade?

What happens when the only time people feel good about themselves is when they are playing games or upgrading their material items? What happens when they start to lose their ability to upgrade or worse, have what they have *'bought'* taken away by debt collectors? Are they still able to be content with their life? What about when they look in the mirror and notice their health fading, their partners drifting away and their children following them down not only the same path, but taking steps increasingly faster?

My student has a daughter about the same age as my own and while we both want what is 'best' for them and give them the highest chance to be able to live a fulfilled life, it is impossible to predict what that would look like in 25 years from now. What I suspect though is that if a person is unable to go through the difficulty of building a skill, unable to concentrate unless doing something enjoyable, unwilling to delay gratification and largely disconnected from others, they are going to struggle.

People like to talk about the exceptions but, there are probabilities and averages at play. Most are in debt, that is not conducive to financial stability. The number of fat people is increasing, which isn't a good sign of health. The ability to concentrate is falling, which indicates an inability to learn difficult skills. Depression is increasing as is self medicating, which indicates unhappiness and lack of social connection.

What will the answer be when our children ask themselves:

*"What am I doing with my life?"*

I might be wrong and it could all be leading to flowers and rainbows for society. That would be a welcome error in judgement but I ma not overly optimistic on that happening, at least without a great deal of turmoil in between. Which leads to the last bit, dealing with stress.

Most people don't worry about improving their stress response mechanisms until they are actually under stress and most avoid the signs along the way until stress impacts their behavior. At that point, it is too late. If we know that change is imminent, know that the system is going to collapse in various ways, know that it is going to be painful, why would we spend our time avoiding it?

Life is pretty messy and I think it is going to only get messier in the next decade or so. Perhaps it will be a period of change or perhaps just more suffering inflicted until we get accustomed to it.

Where are your tracks leading you? Do you need to jump?

Positive feedback loops are not good for the survival of the human!....lol

>This is a highly educated and stable economy where pretty much anyone can get a credit card.

Being educated and having a credit card is not a compatible position..

oh yes...

What I suspect though is that if a person is unable to go through the difficulty of building a skill, unable to concentrate unless doing something enjoyable, unwilling to delay gratification....

I think is is a combination of inferior nutrition and the effects of electronics on our brains - Just a theory...

>Most people don't worry about improving their stress response mechanisms until they are actually under stress and most avoid the signs along the way until stress impacts their behavior. At that point, it is too late.

Do you not improve your stress response by making sure you experience stress in your life...? (can you improve it with out experiencing, I mean?)

Also Tte effects of socialist societies, when the state becomes your nanny.
A 'We' will look after you' psychology, leads to stress averse individuals. Pass the responsibility kind of thing...(imo)

>If we know that change is imminent, know that the system is going to collapse in various ways, know that it is going to be painful, why would we spend our time avoiding it?

That's why I _always_ stress the importance of getting debt free ASAP.
A future - if it is as bad as you seem to think (and me to, btw) there is no future with debt.
Potentially more brutal than anything we've seen since the gulags.

' Bad credit camps for those who are in bad debt?'....
(ok that's _very_ dark, but you get my point. Have debt, and you have chains.)

Oh, I feel all optimistic for 2019 now! ( go steem! lol)

My point. Going the step further to a quick loan on top indicates how poor the education system is. Well, the system works as designed ;)

>Do you not improve your stress response by making sure you experience stress in your life...? (can you improve it with out experiencing, I mean?)

It is possible to introduce controlled stresses of various kinds in the same way that one will go to practice/training for a sport, not just turn up to the game expecting the skills to materialize when needed.

...it certainly does that.
And all initiated around the early 1900's by the carnegies and rockefeller's 'philanthropically' minded endeavors.

From academia, to the present big pharma 'educational' system.

When I look at my two cousins sitting at the screens all day gaming or consuming Youtube, constantly asking for new toys being bought because they get bored of the ones they get in one evening and then forget about them, I wonder what will become of them in years to come.

It is not my place to say how they should be brought up, but I wish their parents taught them thinking about things, problem-solving and spark their imaginations with real-world things instead. However, most parents are too busy to work away anyway, then tired from all the working to really work with their kids it seems.

About things people don't want to do. I think it can be easily fixed by changing the attitude. If we are able to do things we want to do it is a privilege, we can't always be privileged. We are no special snowflakes.

>I wonder what will become of them in years to come.

I see it as a class gap forming where there will be those who qualify for real work and those who will just be consumers. I think that if walking down the street, we will be able to identify which is which by looks alone.

>However, most parents are too busy to work away anyway, then tired from all the working to really work with their kids it seems.

It really isn't easy and there is more and more reliance on someone else to do the teaching (school) without recognising that they have an agenda too.

>I think it can be easily fixed by changing the attitude.

I wonder if there will ever be a device that allows us to tune our own attitude.

While in the last fiction would remain in books and our imagination, it has now expanded into our living given the “realization” of bringing fiction to live through the media we consume and immerse ourselves with. I admit I am a victim as well but try everyday to balance it out an be an example for my family butbit surrounds us and makes it ever more difficult to do so...

It's probably best to lead by example. If the children will see their parents create something meaningful, they will want to do the same.

I can well imagine a situation when a daughter or a son is watching their mom or dad draw, write, compose, play, build something interesting and as a result of that little by little they will start create too in their own way.

This will help them learn to fight the urge of immediate gratification.

I am the son of an artist (painter) and watched my dad spend hundreds of hours to complete one piece and our house was filled with examples of effort. My parents always took the 'entertain yourself' approach with me.

>This will help them learn to fight the urge of immediate gratification.

The bane of the future is instant gratification in the present.

Truth man. I don’t have kids yet and I’m fairly reclusive so I don’t see a lot of these trends too frequently first hand. I know they are happening, it doesn’t take more than a trip to the grocery store to see it but I am able to ignore it I guess.

For me though, I saw the great divide from a pretty interesting perspective I think. I’m 35, when I was in grade school we barely had computers (it wasn’t a wealthy school) and in highschool we had just started having computer classes but I never even learned to type properly because I was just a year ahead of the technology. I got a cell phone (dumb) when I was 21. My younger siblings however are both on the other side of that change. With their formative years based around aim (a pretty interesting acronym) and myspace, video games and Internet. Nothing like the level of immersion that we’re at now but still, the difference for me was so clearly visible at the time.

My friends and I spent our free time hanging out in parking lots, playing frisbee, or driving around all night high on coke (o cola) and pilfering garden gnomes and then trying to find our way home with out a map (no gps back then either). Maybe not the kind of wholesome fun you’d want your kids getting up to but dang, Probably ultimately safer for our mental health by a long shot than spending our time in front of a screen, playing at killing everything in sight. I mean it’s just a game right?

The world changed hard and fast in the following few years after that. Almost to the point of unrecognizability.

Anyway, it seems to me that learning and growing are the best things about life, maybe the purpose of it. That many if not most find it to stressful or taxing to “crack a book” as we used to say could be the biggest problem facing us as a species. Life without growth is just existence really.

Life has definitely changed a lot and I am a few years on from you ;)
There are going to be benefits of technology of course but there are going to be some pretty severe costs if people lose human contact because of it. There are already issues being seen when hiring (I deal with some of this in my work) where adults are unable to set reasonable expectations of their world and want everything delivered in an instant. From many of the people I talk to, while they should be happy with all they have (and grateful) they are much more ghost-like working on automatic.

I have boys who spend a lot of time gaming. I'm not sure of the answer
They say people make money with gaming and knowledge of it. But just like professional sports...only a few. I try find other outlets...but they enjoy it. All friends join in and it gets loud lol.

Some people make money from it sure but there are literally billions of players so the number who could ever get a significant income is minute. There are positives in the moment but the future costs are still not fully realised.
