<div class="text-justify"> How come it is still so weird to discuss money? Granted, it *is less weird* for me than it was when I started this journey into crypto and open wallets, but it is still pretty weird. We are so conditioned not to talk about personal finances, except at a very high level where there is little value in the discussion. Yet, it would be extremely helpful if rather than keeping the topic taboo, we could discuss it openly, and ask questions from those who know more than us, and be asked. The problem is, that ultimately, the "finance game" is one of competition and being a first mover has an advantage, which incentivizes people to keep secrets, to not share. And then, those who do share tend to be punished fordoing so, because that conditioning that makes it a taboo topic, also sets the social conventions on emotional response, so people who talk about money are base or bragging. So, discussions are behind closed doors and hidden away, especially since they can evoke quite strong reactions in people, especially those who feel they are victims of the economy. >We are all victims of it. *Because it is fundamentally broken.* But, being a victim doesn't help us improve our position and if we wallow in victimhood, we are unlikely to get out of the conditions we suffer. If we want to have a better financial profile, expecting it to just happen or be enabled by others is folly - we have to take an active role in our transformation. And, there is transformation involved for most of us, as quite often, we have to unlearn what we have been taught is normal and reposition our belief system and practices, transplanting new ideas and new methodologies. Over the last years, I have had to unlearn a lot and I have a lot more to unlearn to be where I want to be mentally in regard to my finances. I grew up under the proviso that "money isn't everything" which is true, but what is important to note, money affects ***nearly everything*** in our lives in some way. Denying this fact disempowers us and reduces our ability to act. Money is a tool only, but it gives us tradeable access to goods and services that we need and want. Sure, we don't want to have to spend every waking moment compelled to earn more of it. But as someone who has struggled at times, spending every moment worrying about not having enough of it is emotionally draining and humiliating, even if kept secret from others. It is always present, weighing in, judging every expenditure, reminding that needed or wanted, it can't be afforded. There is little beauty in living in poverty and while there are important lessons to be learned through it, I don't believe that it is a place that has value in staying. And, I don't believe that poverty can be overcome through handouts, because unless it leads to empowering people to provide for themselves, it turns being poor into being a slave instead - reliant on the masters of distribution. I have read a few articles lately that have called for more handouts, as if that is the solution to closing the wealth gap, when in actual fact, it is one of the drivers of it. Government handouts are like a money laundering scheme, because the hands it goes into, only have the possibility to spend it to survive, but no more. That money is going to get pushed from taxpayers (directly or through debt increases) through those hands and then into the pockets of the corporations, but at no point does it help the people it goes to to empower themselves, to improve themselves, to take control of their own lives and destiny. >So what to do? At scale, I don't know, but at an individual level, I feel that the answer has to come through taking responsibility and taking action - learning, building and working toward some level of agency. For each person, what needs to be learned (and unlearned) will differ, as will the actions and the type of work to do, but at least for me, it has been an empowering process, one where I have been able to at least *feel* like I have some control over my own future. >No longer a victim. This comes with its own drawback. >No one left to blame. When people talk about *making money,* the focus gets put on the ***money*** part, not on the ***making*** part. What people tend to forget is there is process involved, facilitated by knowledge and skills applied to meet conditions. It is a type of targeted wisdom, which doesn't mare those who are able to make money well smart, but it does make them good players - like a star sportsperson. Depending, it might be a narrow skill or have broad application. It might add value to others, or extract it from them. But, there are actions involved. The making is an "act of creation" and I think that this is one of the things that engages people to keep on making it, especially if they are good. And, as a tool of access, making money satisfies our desire to advance, to progress, because it gives us the possibility to *do more* with our lives, see more, consume more and even *be more.* Having money doesn't make a person better, unless it is used in ways that *make a person better.* >Money makes us better. Not the having, but the usage to do things that improve our capabilities and that of others. To build value, rather than extract it. It helps us get the experiences required to unlearn, and those that help us learn better, so that we can apply what we know to be our best. >We can all be better. Money isn't required to be better, but being better inherently means we ***need to change*** what we are right now to something that is more valuable in the future. Improvement is a process of investment into the future and if we do not move actively in a direction we choose, we are going to ***be moved*** in a direction chosen for us by others. A rudderless ship at sea, floating on the tide of other people's choices. >You see? Reading this, you likely felt a few different emotions come up. Perhaps you agree with some of the things I have said, perhaps you disagree with others - but why? Why does any talk about money elicit such emotional responses? If you believe money is not important, why are you feeling something at all? If I was talking about hammers or drills, would you get emotional and have fears arise, feel the need to express an opinion? Would you feel attacked, get defensive? Are you a victim of circumstances, or an agent of change in your own life? Money. How you use it matters. How you feel about it matters. If you need it, ***you'll feel it.*** Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] </div>

There is a show on Netflix called Watch How To Get Rich where the host takes real people and they literally go through all their finances. I really like it, but I also can't comprehend sharing all my finances with the world either... which is kind of exactly what you're talking about... I'm not super open about my finances because I'm worried someone somewhere will use that against me somehow. Um, I could not disagree more about your causes for the wealth gap crisis. Handouts don't widen the wealth gap, how could it? The wealth gap is some people having barely enough to survive and other people having way more money than anyone could ever spend. Giving people handouts to make rent and buy food so they don't die doesn't widen the wealth gap. The wealth gap exists because there are way too many loopholes that wealthy people and corporations use to hide their money or avoid paying taxes. We've all increased our productivity significantly over the last couple of hundred years, which means we should all be making more money... or working less. Instead shareholders and executives have taken all the profit from that increased productivity. The way to solve the wealth gap is to share the wealth of that increased productivity with the workers that are producing more. You don't need handouts if people are actually getting paid fairly for the revenue they are generating. Either companies choose to pay fair, or government regulations force them to pay fair or unions force companies to pay fair. Those are the solutions.

> Um, I could not disagree more about your causes for the wealth gap crisis. Handouts don't widen the wealth gap, how could it? I am not sure how to explain it in words, but will try. Remembering that there are many factors involved, but I will simplify my view a bit. Taxpayer earns 100 dollars, pays 30 in tax. Government pays 10 dollars as a handout. Recipient can't do anything other than pay living expenses. That 10 dollars goes wholly to the rental owners, corporations, debt service. And then... >The wealth gap exists because there are way too many loopholes that wealthy people and corporations use to hide their money or avoid paying taxes. The owners, corporations and debt financers pay 10% in tax (they never pay the full rate and it can be as low as 2% in some cases) while their employees pay 30% and keep the cycle going. Increased productivity, for example through automation, increases profits for the corporations, lowers the money going to government through income tax. This profit is then used to own more and rent seek, or benefit from those who can't afford alternatives. It is not just the handout, it is the whole system. However, the handout can be enough to "survive" but not enough to own and generate wealth. This is simplified, but it is a slow bleed through a widening wound, meaning it is quickening. >You don't need handouts if people are actually getting paid fairly for the revenue they are generating. This is correct. It is like the tipping culture in the US - people work for tips, when what they should be working for is a living wage. In places like Finland where tipping culture doesn't exist, there is also far more balance in wealth. If you run a successful business, it shouldn't be because you don't pay your employees well enough. Ownership is the solution to improve wealth distribution. Paying money isn't enough, people need to be invested into businesses that generate money too. But, we also live in a consumer world, so even when people have the opportunity to invest, most don't and rather spend on something unneeded - which drives those profits even higher. As consumers of the economy, we need to demand a better economy and if that isn't legislated (coded), then it needs to be dumped and devalued, with wealth instead being generated elsewhere. That is what we are playing around with on Hive. It isn't perfect by any shot, but it is better than the traditional alternative and it is getting better.

Right, so it's not the handouts that is causing the wealth gap issue, it's the corporations who are profiting off this massive productivity increases not paying proper taxes. Corporations shouldn't be paying 2%-10% in tax while their workers pay 30%. If companies paid 30% in tax, for example, then the wealth gap would shrink, for all the points that you raised whether there was handouts or not. If corporations paid their fair share of taxes then the government could actually spend a lot more on handouts, people could spend their money on more than just living expenses, they could actually start to save and then own assets themselves... shrinking the wealth gap further. Alternatively, those handouts could be spent on education, which could also help people either earn more or be more financially independent. Most people in poverty are far more motivated to learn and dig themselves out than those who have never gotten close... but it's hard to educate yourself when you're working 2 or 3 jobs just to make rent. I don't think handouts are the answer, but your focus on handouts suggested you were essentially blaming people for being poor or being unable to make ends meet without assistance for the wealth gap instead of laying the blame firmly at the entire predatory system that really rewards people for generational wealth and excludes those without access to money, education, networks, etc. I'm all for demanding a better economy and/or dumping this current dumpster fire of a system (even though I've done well enough within it). Personally, I love the Co-op model of businesses, where all the wealth generated by the business goes to the workers (who are also investors). I'm glad we're not talking about hammers and drills... my replies would be 10x longer, easily.

The taboo of discussing money is indeed a problem, as it hinders people from openly learning and asking questions. I too think that people who do share financial information tend to be punished for it and people are not opened to it. Using money is a tool to build value and improve oneself and others, and if we all understand this we will nurture better our personal finances and use them wisely. We should all be learning, building, and taking action in order to empower ourselves financially and reach our dreams.

I've always been pretty open about my life. Even here on Hive. Probably too much to some degree. I get the part about seeing it as a competition. It is only natural that we start comparing ourselves when it comes to certain things. Then again, we are all different and we have all taken different paths. I just don't get the point of being fake. Especially in front of your friends.

In some ways, the competition can be healthy, but I don't like the way it has become to beat others, if that makes sense. It can also be to investigate and improve together, seeing which approach works the best, but where all are benefiting. >I just don't get the point of being fake. Especially in front of your friends. I think there is a cultural aspect to this too. There is the keeping up with the Jones' idea, which is quite strong in Finland. But in regards to friends, the social circles are small so people end up competing with those closest to them, rather than helping each other grow together.

Many people are embarrassed, I think. People who make very little are embarrassed by how little they make so they don't want to talk about it, and some people who make a lot may also be embarrassed in that they don't want to appear to brag and/or they don't want to make their poorer friends feel bad. People don't want money to matter. Whatever side of the political divide we come down on, everyone wants a fairer world. We hate money, but we know it's necessary. As you learned growing up "money isn't everything". There are hundreds of variations on that line but it all has that message that money is a necessary evil which we don't like but much deal with. I think this general negative feeling about money also leads into not wanting to discuss how much we make. But you're right, of course. Society would benefit if we talked more about money. Not just in negotiating power against corporations, but in teaching us how to handle the money most of us actually have. I agree that handouts won't fix anything as is. That's a tough problem, because most of us want to help those less fortunate. We don't want to see them starve and suffer, so handouts seem like a good solution. It's simple, it looks good on TV, sounds good. But yeah, it usually isn't actually all that good.

The embarrassment is part of it for sure. Even among friends, saying "I can't afford it" can be very hard for many people. >Whatever side of the political divide we come down on, everyone wants a fairer world. Exactly. Which is one of the reasons I don't think there should be political divides. Instead, there should be political unison with wellbeing the goal for all activities. >but in teaching us how to handle the money most of us actually have. It is not what you have, but how you use it. Most of us are very ineffective with how we use our available resources, whether money, time, energy or information. It isn't that handouts are inherently bad, but they have to be used strategically in ways that improves the opportunity of people and encourages them to participate in value-adding ways. My experience with money is that it makes you feel less stress about not having other things. Like I had a lot of single life during my youth years and that was possible because I had money in hands. So I moved on with life easily. Without money, without having your own wife and kids I can imagine what society would do to such men. I guess money is weapon of survival not really survival itself but a weapon.

I am not sure of your background, but I have heard in some societies, it would be a problem. Western societies, it seems it is an accepted and perhaps even encouraged norm.

I've been responding quite a lot today, but for this one, I'll keep it brief. My mother always told me: "Money isn't everything, but it does give you options." And I find it much better to have options in life than be stuck down a path because you don't have the money for anything else. I've been quite frivolous with my money over the years, but at least with crypto, I feel like I have much more control over it. In turn, I am more inclined to be active in my financial outlook and have put in more effort to plan for the future.

I am falling behind very, very fast! ;D >I've been quite frivolous with my money over the years, but at least with crypto, I feel like I have much more control over it. There is something different about it, isn't there? I think it is because we see it and use it with a lot of transparency, so our actions are also come with some kind of consequence. The visibility being that we see it all ourselves, not necessarily that others do.

Money matters and I agree that I feel it more when money is tight. I find myself way more conscious then. I don't spend that much and I don't try to show myself as wealthy either. Personally, I think having a rougher childhood where I didn't get much money to begin with helped but I found that the financial education in school was lacking. It's a good thing that the internet exists.

"The love of money is the root of evil" and other quotes and beliefs made it weird for one to talk about money freely without being seen as obsessed. Anyone who has ever been in a state of lack will understand how important money is, it isn't everything yet it affects everything including quality of life. I always love to discuss money with people I can learn from. Also, not having to worry about money when it comes to affording the most basic things is a big flex. Interesting post

I agree with you that money really affect our life and it's the biggest need of our life now. Really you're right that people love to talk about money but don't talk about how to make it? That's why they fail to make it because they never negotiate it with others

I see your point and I fully agree with you and @aussieninja I have an individual VAT in Italy: I do not recover the VAT (since my customers do not pay VAT to me so when I pay it I lose it), if I have medical visits to do, through the traditional medical system I have usually to wait months (or years, like happened to my mum). We pay taxes for services that are not fully working and stil, in Italy we have more than 8300 villages, each of them with a Major, many public employees and so on. A few years ago they made an experiment, quite close to where I live now, it's called "Valle Samoggia". They aggregated 5 different villages (they made up 33k inhabitants in total). On an yearly turnover of 33 millions €, they managed to save 1 million € from just cutting public employees. They reinvested such money into the territory powering up public transportation and cycling routes. Besides, i would say that is not simply a matter of shareholders but moreover of a general greed from the governments and all the people that are much more interested in getting the salary at the end of the month instead of really bringing value to the system they are working into. A spreading greed brings to everybody suffering more (struggling with money) and becoming greedy at their own spot and so on. I see a vicious cycle here. We can subvert by working ethically and correcting people that are not doing it

I'm not sure I can really blame people who are more interested in getting a salary at the end of the month instead of bringing real value to the system they are working into. Their incentives are to look after themselves and their families, and a salary helps a lot with that. If the incentives aren't there to add value to the system, then I think the system is not set up correctly. It's the fault of the system, not the individuals within. I agree with you that the correction is to correct people not doing it. If public employees are not bringing value then they need to be replaced... through elections. The aggregation of 5 villages to power up public transportation is incredible! I truly hope that all the government services of that area are still providing the services people need. My concern with cuts like that is that people have to wait even longer for permits, medical visits, etc. It's a tricky balance.

It's a matter of survival and eventually it's not their fault or merit to get such job. BUT, getting money for low quality work or for not working at all is something not ethical that contributes to dilute the efforts of the ones really working. I am saying that I do not expect them to get rid of such position, but instead, creating more KPIs and monitoring to check who is absolutely not performing. Am I too much optimistic or ethical myself? :D When a customer requires more time and I made a wrong estimation or a needed more time to perform something I was not 100% immediately ready to perform, I usually tend to not charge all the time on the customer. Sometimes I even do not charge anything more at all. And about the aggregation, is happening the contrary of your fear. Since many procedures have been centralized, they require a total of people lower than before but with higher efficiency (the idea is the same about bringing efficiency to workers and to work). So let's say that before, for public administration were employed in total 100 people. Now with eventually 80 people they work with a higher workload (so they better exploit their time) and the expenses are overall lower.

> in Italy we have more than 8300 villages, each of them with a Major, many public employees and so on. They have been consolidating this a lot in the last decade or two here and in terms of healthcare, consolidating further. Cutting back on administrators and middlemen that do little, is a good start.

The only time I don't like money is when I'm stuck doing something I don't enjoy in order to get money. So if you take the money out of the equation, I'm still stuck doing something I don't enjoy doing, therefore, boiled down, the money isn't the problem. An example of something I love to do is work on the stuff seen and read in that blog of mine. So of course I don't have an issue making money doing that. But like anyone here who finds themselves in a situation where they're making money, you'll notice some don't like to see it happening and feel like you don't deserve it. Once again though, boiled down and taking the money out of the equation, you're simply doing something they don't like. People wanting to abolish money, getting rid of it entirely, simply don't like it. Just the thought of taking something away from everyone stems from selfishness and greed. Those concepts existed before money and don't go away if you take money away. One of the first things a cult leader takes away is money. That gives them control of all the tools and disempowers the people. And it's always disguised as a way of caring for others and having their best interests in mind. Only a charlatan can sell you *good vibes, peace, understanding, and fairness; for the low low cost of everything.*

> But like anyone here who finds themselves in a situation where they're making money, you'll notice some don't like to see it happening and feel like you don't deserve it. I feel that this is something that is happening on the various "unpaid" social medias too, where people are "cancelling" those they don't like, simply because they don't like them or, they are jealous. It is a bit like getting a sport cancelled, because you don't have an interest in it and prefer another sport instead. >Only a charlatan can sell you good vibes, peace, understanding, and fairness; for the low low cost of everything. My friend, with this post of yours you have expressed my thoughts and ideas better than I ever could have done... it's like you were in my head! I'm happy because it means that we have similar ideas about many things and this heartens me, maybe I'm having the right thoughts eh eh! In these days I've been thinking a lot about how to increase my earnings and I'm activating further paths; focusing on making money is not the solution in my opinion the process that leads to earnings is important, you have to trigger it and it is certainly not something simple, it requires commitment and effort. I'm not here to tell you how long these last few days are... but soon I'll be able to get a good night's sleep! Among other things, I also started the diet and in the midst of everything there is also a great hunger! A strong hug!

Of course I will update you! Of course I have to get used to the better you have to get used to my stomach being quite rigida nom I can help it, I nutritionist said that I musteytere in line for a health speech. Among other things, excess weight as well as bringing me back pain is also quite dangerous when I play sports. as far as money is concerned, I think we should study at school how it is managed, how it is made and how it is multiplied... let's say at least the basics of everyday economics. Sleep well too, good night!

You're right Here, in my part of the world, when people see you talk about how much money you earn, they feel like you are bragging. Well, there are some people who are bragging but not all. At the same time, we have seen people who got poisoned after they spoke about how much money they make with their close friends. This is one ofvthe reasons why a lot of people have been conditioned not to talk about how much money they make. Jealousy is real.
