Little to the Imagination
<div class="text-justify">

I was reading an article today about some bikini show saying how there is "little left to the imagination" by what were largely unflattering and impractical designs. But, fashion shows aren't about practicality, they are about getting attention. But, the terrible bikinis aside, I was more interested in the phrase of nothing left to the imagination - because that seems to be the culture now.

---

And no, I am not talking about the women who are draping see through material over themselves in some kind of emperor's new clothes scenario, whilst simultaneously complaining about people looking at them, objectifying them, and judging their bodies. Or Kanye West's wife who doesn't even bother with the pretence that she is even trying to hide any bit of her body from view. I am talking about how so much of what we consume now has no mystery, and no space to really think about what is going on, and work out pieces for ourselves. It is all spelled out, *leaving nothing to the imagination* to solve.

And I think this is what ruins the storytelling process, because it makes a lot of what is created immature and lacking subtlety, as it assume the audience just can't work things out for themselves.

But, maybe *that is true.* As it could be that audiences these days are less practically experienced than audiences of the past, so they don't necessarily put "two and two together" as they haven't ever done the working themselves before. They are used to having answers at their fingertips with a simple search, and this means that they don't need to understand the process to get to an answer, they just have to ask the question.

But, this is highly risky, because without having the experience that knows the process, that can do the math, it is impossible to know if the answer is actually correct. If it seems correct and there is no better option on the table, it must be correct. But, a lot of the correct answers are *counterintuitive* and that means that when heard, they don't *feel* correct, unless there is the experience of application and testing prior.

> If chatgpt was around in the time of Gallileo and was asked what shape the world is, the answer provided would say it is flat, right?

This was the question of an *intelligent teen* (thank you @azircon for sharing, it was a great conversation too) who apparently has more logic skills than many adults who rely on AI to provide everything for them. But this actually highlights the problem with a lot of people these days, as most don't have the technical nor the creative ability to ask the right questions, let alone be able to appraise the answers provided. Out of convenience, they grab the headline reply, because it feels good enough, and go on to amplify it forward in order to try and look intelligent in the eyes of strangers.

In another story, I was reading the predictions of someone who estimates that half of white collar jobs could disappear in five years. That might be overzealous, it might not, but we are heading in that direction. However, in the article the guy was saying how their software is already capable of doing entry level work, and coding at the level of an intelligent university student. And while that might not be high-end, it creates a problem.

> How do you become very good at something?

Everyone starts from the basics, but if everyone is skipping learning the basics because there are tools that do all the working for them, can they move into the highly complex? Did Einstein or Heisenberg not understand basic maths? Did Jordan and LeBron not practice dribbling the ball?

And this is the problem with having all the answers at the fingertips, because it means not having to think through how to actually solve problems. And while we might think it is awesome as adults today, the thing is that our brains develop and mature from our experiences, building actual neurological circuitry. If we are skipping to the answers all the time, the foundational processes of the brain and the psyche aren't getting built correctly, which makes us *physically less capable* than previous generations. At least when it comes to problem solving.

And the problem with not having the problem solving foundation, is that it doesn't much matter what information is available, a person is unable to use it effectively. Much like me with a high-level physics book in front of me - it is *inapplicable.* not because it is irrelevant though, but because *I can't apply it.*

We keep getting served increasingly "complete" content, that has been engineered to be easier to consume, without considering that in order to grow, the brain needs challenge. And yeah, while it will still *feel challenged* by increasingly simple formulas, it means that it also gets increasingly worse at dealing with the complexities of life.

Despite so many "baring it all" what is actually happening, is that we are becoming more narrow, more conservative, and less able to grow our world. We are becoming so conservative, that we are on the edge of returning to infantilism, throwing tantrums whenever something challenges our world view, or someone breaks one of our personal beliefs of what we hold to be true - even when our truth is an obvious fantasy.

> But without an imagination, it is impossible to challenge ourselves.

So we must be right. Right?

I am sure that explicitness in modern content could undermine critical thinking. By not exercising deduction, the ability to solve complex problems atrophies. A valid concern arises as to how new generations will develop fundamental analytical skills if essential learning processes are omitted, affecting the ability to face real challenges and discern the validity of information. They simply die in the concrete jungle.

There's a slippery slope here: Will people treat AI as *"Gospel,"* or as a helpful tool?

I find AI occasionally helpful as a *supplement* to some idea I am forming; some thought pattern that can be made *"fuller"* by looking at the additional input for AI. But the *thought* starts with me.

But many people are also lazy and *"just want the answers."8

> *"Write me an essay about tomatoes!"*

That's the lazy approach where the gospel according to AI is on the memu, and nobody *questions* that. But it's also the possible road to Idiocracy because... *well*... in olden times, it was the GIGO *(Garbage In, Garbage Out)* principle; your output will only be as good as your source material. So, in the tomato essay example, if the source becomes dumber and dumber, AI is also likely to become dumber and dumber, *unless* it is derived from AI having *first hand experience* of what it's like to deal with soil ph, cutworms, aphids, root rot and goodness knows what else makes tomatoes challenging to grow.

*That* part of the equation will likely take more than a *few years* to develop.

# =^..^=

You made a very important point about how relying too much on tools and AI might make future generations less able to develop their basic skills, just like athletes who need to keep practicing the basics before they become pros.

I am already doing it for a week. During that time I already made and posted cover, 2 posters and 3 pages. Progress is slow but fun. Also I have time till june 29 to decide if I want to participate in this [manga contest](https://www.mangadraft.com/contests/global-comic-awards-2025.en).It has a fixed theme so I would have to create a completely new manga because my current story has nothing to do with ,,first love''...at least for now. I doubt I would have any chance of winning but no is gonna hit my head if I will try, right?

Automation and machinery have always disrupted the job market, but have never yet been a root cause of long-term systemic unemployment and poverty. I expect the same from AI, especially as the true believers discover its inherent limitations in spite of the hype.

As for your deeper point, this explains why we were also expected to learn arithmetic by hand and show our work. Sure, calculators were cheap by the 90s, and we have them in our phones now, but actually gaining the experience means we can recognize when something literally doesn't add up if we applied ourselves to real learning then.

> I expect the same from AI, especially as the true believers discover its inherent limitations in spite of the hype.

It will have plenty of limitation to start with, but it doesn't matter. It will eat into parts of jobs, meaning that 5 jobs can be reduced to 4, and then 3.

> As for your deeper point,

This is the more important part from the human perspective I believe. Even without jobs available, we still have innate sense to create as humans and, add value. So if we can't, we live in a type of hell.

Greetings Mr. Tarazkp, there is one thing for which human beings are willing to give everything for which we have worked, we have desired, created, even to give life, even to have sanity, security, happiness by "being right. I think that transcending beliefs and being right, is to expand not reject them, our beliefs, because beliefs support behaviors.

To move forward you have to do something, instead of believing and being right about something.

For as โ€˜pessimisticโ€™ some of these types of views, commonly held by many, may seem - with valid reasons to support the โ€˜foresight,โ€™ *thereโ€™s always a yang to the yinโ€ฆ*

As i first started playing more with ChatGPT, I found it to be a rather interesting process of development as wasnโ€™t just looking for quick easier answers and *relying on* it to provide them, but noticing *the refinement of my own thinking process* as more clearly articulating better questions. And as moving forward since with that same type of foundational approach, its been interesting noting a revival of *curiosity.* Not just for surface-level *facts* that could be equally found digging with Google, but to grok deeper details of nuances & interconnected dynamics that need such collaborative input of human curiosity & refined thinking to get to.

In spite of many critiques iโ€™ve seen of AI speaking to the โ€˜dumbing downโ€™ of people, ultimately *its just a toolโ€ฆ and mirror.*

Indeed, there are potentials for โ€˜shortcutting,โ€™ numbing imagination, etc. as there are also for expanding innovative thinking and personal development. Perhaps it comes back to that *โ€™what to think vs. How to thinkโ€™* angle - the question then being, how to use these tools more constructively to grow our own capacities along with the technological development; how to educate in wise stewardship of the power availableโ€ฆ

Sometimes I feel like it's all spelled out because people get angry/disappointed/butthurt/whiny because they actually have to figure something out.

And then on the flipside of that I think some creators are so excited about their projects that they're desperate tto share every tiny little detail and quite simply cannot help themselves.

have known some people like this where having to hold out on whodunnit before the chapter dropped just about killed them

And some of the aforementioned people also may think they have to share every tiny little detail to prove that they did actually come up with it so there isn't some fantard somewhere screaming about how "their" idea/theory/whatever was "stolen" by the creator of the thing they're a fan of.

I don't know if I just went off on a tangent or not

I think J has looked at chatgpt and whatever else coding and says it's pretty much only good for really basic stuff and sometimes not even that (I know he's played around with it but I don't think he's actually bothered using it in his job but the stuff he codes can get a bit insane and chatgpt would probably tell him it was wrong because it wouldn't have encountered previous examples like that before therefore it can't be done).

> throwing tantrums whenever something challenges our world view, or someone breaks one of our personal beliefs of what we hold to be true - even when our truth is an obvious fantasy.

I've been watching people do this since...even before I got on the internet actually x_x like with the media and stupid news it's amplified to the point of idiocy with the internet. The end result is either self reflection and growing up/evolving or massive meltdowns and wondering why everyone always abandons them "for no reason".

have watched that happen a few times as well, do you think it's becoming more commonplace?

You have touched on something much needed and real. In a world full of exposure and shortcuts especially after recent AI surge, we humans have forgotten the real meaning of art. In doing so, we often skip the slow and rich process of understanding. Not everything needs to scream to be seen. Sometimes, it is the silent learning which teaches us the most. Let's not lose the art of thinking/imagination just because it is easy to AI it. As long as imagination lives, sapiens will exist and thrive.

The world is evolving, and humans are evolving with it. We can't take out the place or importance of technology from humans. It is arguably that there is good and bad side to it. There is no doubt that AI has rendered many people lazy but come to think of it. How many people want to stress themselves when they have resource that can do the work for them ? With the advent of technology, particularly AI, We have traded depth for convenience, and in doing so, we are losing the ability to process, question, and evolve.

It is very likely that there will come a time when instead of human curators on Hive, posts will be curated by AI. And it will be able to instantly recognize who is writing the text, a person or AI.

It is pretty easy now, but getting harder. People who rely on AI though, will eventually find themselves squeezed out of the market entirely.

It's possible that in a year or two's time, there won't even be a way of having a technology that can distinguish between content generated by an LMM or by a person. Have you ever thought that AI is going to develop so quickly, and learn โ€œhumanโ€ patterns almost perfectly, and make content still have those โ€œsignsโ€ of human imperfection? I confess that I'm afraid of the future times that are fast approaching

This is evolution. The Universe is programmed for the emergence of life and the development of intelligence. For now, AI is our assistant, but over time, intelligent creatures will appear whose brains will be able to accommodate all the knowledge of AI. Perhaps this brain will be electronic.

> And this is the problem with having all the answers at the fingertips, because it means not having to think through how to actually solve problems.

I just listen to a podcast with the Steven Cliff Bartlett from the Diary of a CEO, and his gest raised exactly that problem. If we don't get used to find some answers by our own, we are walking to a very poor dimension, were all the "thinking" work is made outside our skulls. Leading us to a very poor existence. And not questioning the "truths" that are present so easily...

> AIs the new priests spreading the gospel.

What a great comparison! Back then, also the books and knowledge were kept for only a few persons. And the "darkness" of the realm was filled by the "truths" that meant to be told. Leading to a herd society, which doesn't question its own existence, or which focuses on itself. Believing that because someone โ€œdoes the workโ€ of โ€œthinkingโ€ for you, it makes your life easier... Excellent point of view, Taraz
