Not Everyone Needs to Know

Last night was the closing party for the week's events, But it wasn't without incident. They had a few games there, and a colleague from my team did one of those "punch machine" things, got his foot stuck, missed the bag, and had to have surgery on his ankle today. He is from another country, so he will be spending a few more days in the hotel, before flying back. Though, because of the strikes in Finland, most people have stayed a day or two more, which has been good, as they have been able to spend some time exploring the city, trying restaurants, and visiting museums.

I of course only had my phone camera on me, but the entertainment was good, even though it wasn't to everyone's tastes. With 600+ people - how could it be? Yet, even the people who had no idea about the music, were pretty stoked at how happy it made the Finns in attendance, which is about 75% of the company. 

There were three artists, with a decent cover band, but it was the introduction of [Maija Vilkumaa](https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maija_Vilkkumaa) that got the crowd excited. She is a an older artist who has a lot of hits that everyone knows and people got super happy, with a little bit of a liquid help. I sent a picture to my wife.

But after that, the CEO then introduced the second surprise act, [Paula Vesala](https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paula_Vesala) - one of my wife's alltime favorites.

I have seen Vilkkumaa before, but this was the first time seeing Vesala, and it was pretty good. I know a lot of the music, and it isn't to my tastes in general, but live music is always better, and she puts on an energetic show. I then sent my wife a message where they were the other came back to stage and sang a song together.

One of the interesting things for small countries, is that when there are star performers, the rest of the world might not know them, but *everyone* in the country does. There is something pretty cool about this, especially since you will have a mix of ages from 20 to 60, all singing along together to the same lyrics, and loving it.

I really have to get some sleep, so I am going to mostly add pictures from now on, but it was a great event and the feedback from the organization and execution has been very good. A lot of work over the space of several months, and a lot of disruption throughout the event, yet it still ran smoothly and people found value in what they were doing.

For those in sales, they have probably been to kickoff events before, and some of them are terrible, death by powerpoint, information dumps. This was not like that at all, plus it expanded beyond sales, with the entire company catered for with tailored tasks that led them in, onsite and will lead them out after. And, it will al add to the impact they are able to make in their roles.

It was a big night that ended relatively early, but most of the 600-strong crowd kicked on to a couple bars in the city, and then pushed through til the early hours of the next day. I went to talk with a few people for a bit, but was back around 2am - but with the whole week of sleep amounting to under 12 hours, I am pretty broken.

There are some events where family can come, but this is hard, because it would be insanely expensive having people come from all over the world. However, some people did bring spouses for the last day or two - but only the internationals. The locals couldn't.

Absolutely! He is being well supported throughout this and will be on covered leave for a while too. Though, being his ankle and working largely remotely, he needn't be gone for too long. I have been talking with him this morning, and our People and Culture team are taking care of him here and when he returns home.
