<div class="text-justify"> I am in the tire-kicking market for a new phone - even though I don't really want to buy one. I have a Huawei P30 from 2019 that has been working fine for the most part, but it is starting to get a little glitchy and unresponsive at times. Have to say though, for a phone that is over four years old, the battery is still holding up better than any of the Samsungs I have had, as they were gone after two years. I am not keen to buy anything while this one is still working and the cracked screen (cracked it a couple weeks ago) doesn't bother me much. >And no, I don't do Apple. However, what is interesting is that while I need a phone, I barely use *the phone function* on it. I likely get a couple calls a week and most of those are coming from my wife asking me to do something, which isn't really a high priority reason to buy. I am guessing I am not the only one who barely uses the actual phone part, even though people are constantly "on" their phones. >Doing what? Besides the quality of the camera, what are the selling points of a device these days? Maybe it matters for those who mobile game, but Words with Friends and Splinterlands (I rarely play on mobile) are not exactly going to push a processor to the limits. Storage space? I think that is a factor to consider for me, as I tend to not only take a lot of photos, but I import a lot from my actual camera for editing and posting, so it tends to take up memory pretty fast. I quickly had a look at a couple as I was passing by a store today, just to see what was around, but pretty much, the only things I need it to do well is take photos and give a smooth experience in terms of usage. The apps I use aren't too resource intensive, but it would be nice that they work well and so far, that has been the case on my old phone. One thing it has to have though is dual sim, as I use the one phone for work and personal, rather than carrying two. >Why am I writing about this? Because, it helps me *not buy a phone* rather than actually going out to get one. Sure, a new phone would be nice, but it isn't going to make any significant difference on my life right now. Writing about it though is like planning a holiday that is not going to be taken - almost as good as going. *Almost.* And, since this is part of the process I would go through if buying now, it means I will have some of the work done when I am actually ready *and willing* to buy. Right now, I can't justify spending 900€ on a phone and while there are cheaper ones too that will be okay, I can't justify spending 500€ on "okay". And, I don't look at the top range, where they are around 2000€. >I have always liked window shopping. *My wife doesn't get it.* I am quite happy to go shopping, look at things, ask questions (if interested enough) and even try things on, but not actually buy unless I am in need or really like it. My wife sees this as a waste of time, but I think it actually saves me money, because rather than building the anticipation and desire and then making the purchase, I can get similar without actually having to buy it, by going most of the way through the buyer journey. >Nice to haves are not good enough. At this stage right now, I have to be able to justify purchases so unless I have a business or family *need* for something, I can't warrant the expenditure. But, like most, I like being a consumer too, and at least for me, a lot of the enjoyment is actually going through the process of the purchase. It is like the enjoyment many feel reading about their favorite sports team, knowing the stats, watching the game but - *never actually playing.* And, I think that because I do this, it means that I don't fall into that trap of purchasing insignificant incremental upgrades with each new release. Instead, when I buy, there is a significant difference from the old to new version for me, meaning that the change is noticeable and it makes more of an impact on my life. It might make things easier, or it might force me to learn new processes, but there is change that I have to navigate, whilst incremental change comes with incremental gains. Obviously, like I have often enough written about, incremental changes lead to large scale shifts, but in my opinion at least, we shouldn't consume in this way. Instead, we should lengthen the lifecycle of the products we buy because it means that in order to sell, suppliers will have to increase their speed of development, because we *demand* better. If it isn't good enough, we won't pay. Now however, in a world of shortening product lifecycles that match with the reduction in attention span and commitment, development doesn't have to improve much in order to get a sale - it just has to be a new version. Familiar, nothing seismic, nothing challenging. >Perhaps this is why people don't get crypto yet - The leap is too much larger than the incremental steps they are used to taking. Whatever it is, until forced or finances stabilize, I will keep looking in windows, not wishing, but waiting until the need arises. My new Samsung's battery unfortunately got rekt quick so it sounds like you're right about that. Sucks, it's like it only holds half of the life it could before, and before it was great. Now I can go to sleep and lose 25-35% battery when I wake up while it's idle.

I've been really happy with the Google Pixel phones in the past. I have a One Plus right now and it has been good, but I don't like it as much as I did my old Pixel. I am not really in the market for a phone, but my next one will likely be a Pixel again as long as T-Mobile supports it. This site is good for comparing different phone models. Even the most basic entry level ones: https://www.gsmarena.com/ Definitely get as much memory as you can. All the other stuff is just gravy.

I have the 9 Pro. It's still pricey. One of the tenants of one plus when they launched was to offer phones at a more affordable price. That kind of went out the door with the 9 Pro. Still up in the $1000 range. It's a great phone though. I am looking really hard at the Pixel 7 Pro.

Funny as I use my phone as a phone and very little else to be honest. I would be happy with an old unbreakable Nokia if it had what I required. I got rid of my last phone reluctantly and will also go kicking and screaming when this one needs changing. It is only a phone yet for some it is their entire life. I had Nokias for years and then - changed once smart(er)phones were a thing. Nokia lost me at that point - and many others. But those old bricks were unbreakable!

My Samsung never lasted more than a year because of the batteries too. I switched to a OnePlus 8 and its still going strong after 3 years. For example it's 10pm now and I'm still at 57% battery without charging today, although I haven't used it that much. But with that said, I had major issues with the screen being really unresponsive, I'm not sure what to replace this with next year, maybe a pixel.

OnePlus 10 Pro is what I was looking at today. mid-range in price, but seemed decent. Pixel seems like one to check out - *according to the comments.* :)

I have been suffering without a phone...sort of. The guy I get financial advice from says if I can save up to enough to make sure I can get the type I want while managing what I have...Then I can get it. Basically for me, it's don't let it break the bank...cause I am broke. Hope you find one you like

Greetings from Venezuela @tarazkp What a desire I have to write in C/Reflections! And, reading you, it makes me want to express so many things on so many subjects. I hope to do it soon. I am also very attached to my digital devices, although I have written articles about not being attached to NASA. (How crazy and what a comparison!) I can relate to taking the time to evaluate, look at the offerings and the best options; it doesn't seem like a waste of time to me; it allows me to make the best decision and I rarely make a mistake. Today I am going to share this post because I liked the way you have written it and I would like to read it calmly on my blog. I'm not much of a shopper myself, but I do like to look in store windows; and I like to have what I need, even if what I need is currently a lot. I tell you something: I have all my hopes fixed on cryptocurrencies because I have always said that money should be within everyone's reach and under everyone's control, not in a single person or organization. Again: Greetings. And I already named you, Taraz, in my last article on Games and parent-child interaction in Autism World. Thanks for the idea.

I also will have to buy new phone some time soon. It served me maybe 8 years but now battery lasts only a few days. In the phone I also only need camera and good battery. So hopefully I will be able to get something for less than 100.

Same here, I go through the phone's battery faster than one sweaty man changing t-shorts on a hot summer day. I needed to change my phone somewhere in December last year, but I still use it for now, until I have enough cash to buy an iPhone 11 or 12, probably. I have the number 8.

I had my previous phone for about 8 years before I swapped it to my current one earlier this year. From the price standpoint, I saw that Motorola had a lower priced phone with similar specs to a Samsung so I went with that. It took some time to get use to the new feature layout but it works out quite well and it's better than my old ass samsung from 8 years ago. I'm also a die-hard Android user. I recently gave up my Google Pixel 5 which I loved. I splurged and got the Samsung Fold 4. I'm very happy with it. I simply love the option for the small screen when closed and the larger screen when opened. The large screen is fantastic for scrolling through email, pics, Hive posts, Messages, etc. and the slightly larger buttons for my fat thumbs to use. The only drawback is of course the built-in Samsung bloatware, but that's really a minor irritation. The camera is fantastic, with incredible zoom and low-light/night capability. Definitely a thumbs up if you're a large screen fan and can convince yourself for the higher end. I really wanted to wait for the Pixel folding, but looks like they are still several months away, but may be good timing for you.

Isn't it too fat in your pocket? That is one of the things that has been turning me off the fold phones - though I like the idea of them a lot! I am hearing good things from the Pixel range, so will have a look at those too :)

It's even fatter with a case. I got one that adds a little but has a nifty place to hold the s-pen in the spine of it. It still fit in a back pocket, even with the case, of course there is quite a bulge. The bigger thing was the extra weight took awhile to get used to. definitely going to pull the sweatpants down! I wondered about if I would keep it the first few days cause of that, but no way I would give it up now. I usually carry in my fleece jacket pocket, or back pocket of jeans without issue.

Yeah, the one I substituted this summer was bought about...six years ago? Serve for as long as possible. Utility rules. Fashion s...s. Half times require half measures...meaning taking no measures until it's really time to. Mine had cracks but worked as a phone phone...until it stopped. Its display became ...not responsive. I need another house for old stuff I wouldn't throw away, yet. And that's a hook, too.

We recently got Henry (13) a mobile and we've been really happy with it. We didn't want to do the monthly plan for 2 years thing again, so we did some research and dropped just under $300 on an Oppo A52. Battery life, photos, all comparable to my S9+, which is more than 4 years old now so needs replacing #soon. I've actually considered getting a smaller tablet instead of a phone; since I make/receive calls so rarely, but then in an emergency I'm stuck with no way to call for help.

I too love going to the shops, looking at the windows and asking for information even if in the end I don't buy anything unless it is strictly necessary, what I buy is then considered considering all the information I collect eh eh! I confess that at the moment since I'm not working and I spend a lot of time at home I'm practically not using the phone for anything, just to call my parents and that's it; being with my wife I don't need to hear her on the phone, I don't play games on the phone... maybe in the evening when I read and comment on some posts but I often do without it. On the other hand, however, I use the pc a lot eh eh! !PGM

The other thing about tyre-kicking is that even if not buying, they can convince me to buy from them when I am ready. Too often if they sense I am not buying now, they treat me badly. They lose a customer next week or next month. I have a laptop from work and a desktop PC hooked up to twin monitors - I only write on my phone if forced!

Heh heh me too and I'm thinking of putting the third monitor back on, a convenience once you try it you won't be able to give up. I use my cell phone very little, the bare essentials... however I have a ZFold at least I can use it open, I can't stand small screens.

I relied on HTC for 8 to 9 years, the M8 for 3 to 4 years, and the 10 for exactly 5 years(a battery replacement was made around halfway) My HTC 10 died last year, so I had to get a new one. And non of the phones really looked interesting, never liked Samsung, nor Apple, they're both overpriced, in this region at least. Google's Pixel line up seemed like a good option, providing a clean Android experience. So I went with the Pixel 6. At the current rate from USD to BDT, it probably cost me around $600. It's been 10 months now, and the phone just keeps on getting better with every update. Many consider the new Pixel lineup to be the "smartest" of all smartphones, and I say it's fairly true. I've been using my Pixel 6 to click a lot of pictures, whenever I get the chance. It's the easy point and shoot type, yet the pictures are something else. 90% of the pictures I upload on Hive are taken on my Pixel. I suggest you give the new Pixel 7 a look, you might like it. It's like no other Android smart phone, that's why it's not for everyone. The 7 Series is even smarter, it gets rid of the flaws from the 6. The 7 Pro is a good one too, especially if you want a better selfie camera and a telephoto lens, for better long-range and portrait shots. Bigger display with curved sides and a higher resolution, that's about it. All in all, the non Pro, Pixel 7 is still the better deal I'd say. Currently it's priced at 600/650 Euros I think.

I got the Pixel 7 and it's been pretty good. Been using Google phones since the Nexus range and like the vanilla Android experience. The Pixel 7 Pro is meant to great for taking photos with the onboard software. What you might want to look for is a phone that lets you use an eSim as well. Not sure if they are common in Finland. The Pixel 7 has that option, but my mobile provider for some reason doesn't allow for an eSim on my plan.... Also, you can get Google's cloud storage, which isn't super duper expensive.

Well... This... This might sound like I'm bullshitting 😂😂 I've got a P30 lite... Its just over three years old.... Battery is still holding like a damn fucking king..usually the Samsung would have been packing up before the two year milestone... Not this one though... I had a p20 and the battery started giving me troubles until I wiped it... Then it was fine... Also... A few weeks ago I bought a new screen guard... And I removed the old one without replacing it that same day... Sad to say a spanner fell on it and it also cracked... But still working fine... Kind of surprised though.. So as you said, strong little phones they are!!

But why not Apple? Just because of the price? I was just delighted with my first smartphone (mpx-200) in 2004, reading books on it on the road and surfing the Internet. I was even more excited when I bought my first iphone3g in 2008. I really enjoyed my first iPad in 2010. After all, these are very handy gadgets.

I had a Nokia for my first phone. A hand-me-down from about 1993/4. First smartphone was a flip too - can't even remember which :D Apple is hard to use for me.

I changed my phone as it had got slower after 4 years. Good that I bought it last year in October because its price has %25 increased. If you are an Android user, I don't suggest switching to Apple.

25% is a lot. I don't understand who is buying 2200€ iPhones. Apples are reliable and all, but I just don't get the logic. My wife uses Apple and fixing anything is a pain - *for me.*
