There are moment in life you want to forget forever, and then there are those you want to remember forever.

># Today was one to remember.

And, I hope that it is one of those shared memories between father and daughter, a moment in time where the child earns a little more responsibility and the daddy gives up a little more control.

https://youtu.be/SSXCvhPJS_0

<div class="text-justify">

Proud daddy moment.

It didn't come easily though, at least not as easily as it had for me when I was a kid, but Smallsteps can be brave when challenged and she doesn't like to be outperformed.

>Her best friend has been able to ride for awhile already.

*Peer pressure.* It is why social groups have more influence than parents. But, that is a problem for another day, as for now, we can just be happy together that she has finally got hold of riding and you know, once you have learned - it is like riding a bike.

> She is growing up fast

Ina few months, she is going to be starting preschool and one of the challenges she is going to probably face is the same that I did. In the early years of school where she is meant to learn to read, write and do simple math, she is going to be bored, as she can already do those things. She is gifted when it comes to language skills, but she is not when it comes to these areas, but because she has had a very analogue childhood diet, she has ended up learning a lot that it seems most of her friends aren't able to do.

For example, the other day at the daycare they did a "reading test" to see if the kids had developmental problems and to track their level. The problem was that the test didn't even come close to challenging the level Smallsteps has, as it tested for skills that she had three years ago already. This means that as a skill-based sorting system, it indicates the expectations for the highest levels too.

I remember that I when I started school and the other kids were learning to read and write, I was sitting in the corner reading books by myself, as there was no "advanced" tasks to work on. It is probably one of the reasons that I was such a bad student throughout school also, as in those early stages, I never learned how to learn for that school-based system.

I have heard the same thing from some dual mother-tongue friends who speak English, as they had to do English at school, but they were able to answer the questions based on their knowledge of the language, not their understanding of the grammar. This meant that while they were native speakers, several of them failed in the grammar tests, because they didn't know the actual rule formulas.

>But, what is more important?

Well, that depends on how you look at it. Practical skill is in my opinion far more important than book skill, but so much of our individual opportunity and future is dictated by the theory of knowledge, not the application of knowledge. Passing those tests is a prerequisite for all kinds of professions and quite often, the people who are actually best suited for the application, are omitted because they aren't able to compete with the book-smart students.

I saw this a lot through my own education path, where people who were good at class were given opportunity, but that doesn't mean that they were able to apply what they know at a trade later. Several of my friends went into medicine because they could, but didn't last long once they had their degree, because their personality wasn't suited to the work itself. Being able to dunk, doesn't make you a skilled and valuable basketballer.

>But, at the same time...

*It is good to be bored.*The most creative amongst us are those who are able to find things for themselves to do when they are bored, rather than just going through the paces of what everyone else is doing. Maybe if Smallsteps is bored enough at school, she will earlier start the journey of self-discovery of what actually interests her and where her real talents lay, instead of conforming to the activities of the curriculum, that teach people to be average employees, not cutting edge developers.

As a parent, what should I be aiming for? The best of the average, or the average of the best? I feel that school encourages the best of the average, where the lowest common denominator takes the lion's share of attention and resources, because that is the easiest way to increase the average results. Those few who are at the top get left out, because improving their scores doesn't move the needle much overall, so they get left to their own devices to challenge themselves.

For me, it doesn't matter what Smallsteps ends up doing, but I believe that feeling that challenge that increases our options and realizes more of our potential, is rewarding for humans to experience. I think that we as humans have a mechanism of continual improvement in us, but we often satisfy ourselves with being god enough in relation to others, rather than the best that we can be in respects to who we are.

>I want my child to be happy

And this requires her to be able to be self-directed and feel that sense of progression through challenge, rather than getting what she wants. Riding a bike is a good example as while I was there every step of the way and in the early stages supporting her riding, she wasn't happy until she could do it for herself, that riding a bike was a skill that *she owned.*

Information is cheap. Anyone can Google book knowledge.
Not everyone can apply it well.

Taraz

Such a proud moment for both of you. It's so awesome when the kiddos are proud of their own achievements, that's the best.

I agree with both you and @cmplxty - the schooling systems suck pretty much everywhere around the world.

> I think the future for Smallsteps is a hybrid approach of state school and home schooling to undermine the nonsense she learns :)

That seems like the best way to go. Bored at school is either an opportunity to find more interesting things to do or get up to mischief. I know I was the latter. Electronics class - I broke everything trying to figure out how stuff worked in high school. My teacher wasn't impressed, but he wasn't teaching us and that was how I learned things, I took them apart and then couldn't put them back together again lol. I broke our Tesla coil and that really pissed him off. Oops.

I am sure that Smallsteps will find what interests her, grab it with both hands and own it.

Have a good one Taraz

It is worse in some places over others. Finland in general is okay, but it is changing rapidly.

>I broke our Tesla coil and that really pissed him off. Oops.

:D

Learning by doing is the best way - though sometimes, I think I might have been better off learning from others a little more first!

And man I love it! Sad when they get to these milestones but also very proud papa moment! We don’t have anywhere to store a bike yet but when our son took his own fish off the hook that was my grown up sad moment lol. Maybe a little redneck hahaha

Yeah the school system is atrocious. It’s only designed for making robots not people who are intelligent and able to think for themselves. The shit they teach you in school doesn’t help at a workplace at all. Being able to do calculus hasn’t helped me AT ALL in the real world yet I learned it in college. What the fuck is that? Lol. I hear you on doctors, they are incredibly book smart but terrible with interacting with, you know, humans.

I think it’s good that we can at least give the kids an environment to potentially flourish in what they want to do. We can give them material to delve into that interests them while at home and tell them that school is boring with what they are learning but just suffer through it and you can learn what interests you at home.

And this is the better end of it. The "social movement learning" is what I fear the most in the school systems now.

The traditional school system is a disappointment as they keep teaching subjects that would have no bearing to a child's future. I personally think that every child should have some level of psych assessment to determine his or her natural strengths and weaknesses, his or her personality and which field would suit such child. Then the training for that field should begin early.

There are forms of assessments that valuates a child's cognition, social skills, problem solving skills, etc and can predict what areas the child would be most comfortable.

I don't think it would lead to control issues if it is done right. The assessment is just a predictive tool. The child is still allowed to choose what he/she would be happy with. The assessment just helps the child find out what he/she is good at, at an early age.

5 years this has been happening to me, it started here, around people that are still here. Homeland security has done nothing at all, they are not here to protect us. Dont we pay them to stop shit like this? The NSA, CIA, FBI, Police and our Government has done nothing. Just like they did with the Havana Syndrome, nothing. Patriot Act my ass. The American government is completely incompetent. The NSA should be taken over by the military and contained Immediately for investigation. I bet we can get to the sources of V2K and RNM then. https://peakd.com/gangstalking/@acousticpulses/electronic-terrorism-and-gaslighting--if-you-downvote-this-post-you-are-part-of-the-problem

When I was child, I didn't want to experience challenges. Obsession with fear was big, but when I see my friends riding a bike, talking among them, having courage on eyes I try to imitate them in everything. I became active and interacted with them and this helped me in my studies in terms of communication and also work. Choosing friends should be carefully made in childhood by parents

I was amazed at how she is able to ride on her own. She has been practising this before now and I love how she is getting to learn how to ride without any help, though constant monitoring is all she needs until she can finally stand on her own. And of course, it is a skill for her because schools wonΒ΄t teach her these but to learn while an adult is helping.

>Her best friend has been able to ride for awhile already.

I love positive peer pressure where you are challenged to improve in a positive way and not being influenced or pressured in a negative way.

I am so happy for her and now she is hopefully going to build her skill range and confidence a bit so that she can be more independent :)

Peer pressure works on both sides - the positive and the negative. the trick as a parent is, to teach children to make their decisions for themselves, but take into consideration the information at their disposal.
