<div class="text-justify"> The Happiest Country in the World! # Finland plummets in Unicef child wellbeing ranking >The latest study highlights significant declines in several key indicators, including youth suicide rates, childhood obesity, and academic performance. [](https://yle.fi/a/74-20161708) These are three indicators that I have been mentioning for *over a decade* here, and writing about on Hive since I arrived. Because, it is predictable. And while the article linked above looks at Covid as the turning point, these factors were in play well before that, and the "sharp turn for the worse" isn't from Covid restrictions, but rather that this is the first generation that has been raised by a screen in front of their face from near birth. --- --- For instance, they are looking at 15-19 year old suicide rates, with in Finland is 10.5 per 100,000 in that age group a year. Smartphones arrived in around 2007 *before most were born* and were ubiquitous a couple years later here in Finland at least. From way, way back, I noted how many parents at cafés were sitting their children in front of screens to keep them entertained. And on buses, and in parks, and everywhere. >Children went from playing, to staring. And the likely reason that this has become more of an issue in the "wealthier" countries, is that the uptake of the technologies and access to high-speed internet has accelerated rapidly. And suicide is an extreme indicator of the change in social behaviour, with childhood obesity and academic performance two others that point toward a degradation in physical health, mental health, and social health. > We have done this to our children. The current environment in Finland, which is probably better than many still, is not set up for increasing wellbeing in children, and helping them mature into healthy adults. The entire system is set up based on a profit model, where things are good if they make money, or make life easier, without recognising the costs of taking this approach. Easier doesn't mean better. Profitable doesn't mean healthy. > We can do better, but better is inconvenient. The focus of society these days is about improving the level of convenience, whether it be speed of access, or reduction in effort required - everything is about optimisation. And the "extra" attention resources we have, get sucked up by entertainment of some kind, at a cost of course. But this model doesn't take into consideration whether the products and services provided are good four our body, minds and emotions - quite the opposite. It is about leveraging our weaknesses in order to sell more, to engage us more, to trap us into the sales cycle more. > And it is pretty obvious that children are suffering. And it isn't their fault. Yet, now some of them are adults who have been conditioned to think, behave and feel in ways that aren't conducive to personal or social success, and the only tool they have available to them is more avoidance activity, more screens, more distraction. But eventually, even the most compelling distraction, can't veneer over the pain and suffering, and they are forced to deal with it. Yet, they are completely inexperienced with dealing with hardship - *especially* in the wealthier countries. The warning bells should have been blaring for decades already, but at the latest, fifteen years ago. But it is only in very recent times that there has been any kind of concerted agreement that the digital life starting so young, is *terrible* for developing minds, bodies and personalities. It was only a few years ago that friends of mine were ridiculing me for keeping my daughter off screens - and now they are looking to do the same - after their kids have already been on the screens for a decade or more. > We don't evolve very fast. While technology and culture can change rapidly, our biological systems change very, very slowly. We might want to be woke and think that we can evolve our behaviour on our new belief systems, but the reality is, it doesn't work that way. We are animals who have certain needs for wellbeing and in order to thrive, whether it be nutritional requirements like vitamins and minerals, or social requirements like love and intimacy. We seem to think we can satisfy hundreds of thousands of years of evolution with a digital substitute, but it just doesn't work that way. > *And we are seeing the impacts clearly.* Yet I am sure, people will still find ways to deny it. *Because it is inconvenient.* Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] --- **Be part of the Hive discussion.** - Comment on the topics of the article, and add your perspectives and experiences. - Read and discuss with others who comment and build your personal network - Engage well with me and others and put in effort **And you may be rewarded.** --- </div>

Let's face it, it seems that kids having access to screens and digital life from such an early age is really taking its toll on their well-being. And it's not just in Finland, eh? We see it in a lot of countries that are already quite developed. It's true that technology gives us good things, I don't deny that, but it's also bringing a few messes on a social, emotional and physical level that, truth be told, we can't just look the other way. I think it is key to try to get them to spend less time in front of screens, to encourage them to play more outdoors, to run around, to get a little dirty, and at the same time, to put more effort into teaching them about their emotions. These are steps that, yes or yes, we have to take. Changing this dynamic is not something that only one person can do, we all need to work together. But if we succeed, I truly believe that we will be laying a much more solid foundation for new generations to grow up healthy and happy.

I have that screen struggle a lot, especially with other families. I don't blame Lily, I was the same - only allowed 30min of screentime a day when around 8 years old, so I actually chose some of my "friends" by what console they had and how much we were allowed to play there. But I had books at home, so my screentime were those. And that was of a huge benefit. I'm so excited about Lily starting to read now, and can't wait to start exploring new worlds together. I have so many authors I either want to read to her or with her. It's honestly one of the things that get me most excited, as it is a step back into my childhood. She will meet the flickering screens eventually, and is allowed to watch around 90min per week (sometimes a movie in one evening, sometimes a few times divided into several days). She will get into video games, probably. I'll play with her, no problem, so I can keep an eye on the total screentime and make sure that pagetime is prioritized. And in the meantime, I'll keep watching all those kids becoming trolls. With humpbacks, terrible social skills and narcissistic behavior patterns. And that's who Lily will have to deal with. *sigh*

I think a lot of the problem comes down to reinforcement as well. If you are going to take a stand against screens, you need to be backed up on it. For example, my nieces and nephews spend a lot of time on screens. That's just what they are allowed to do, we can try to limit their exposure when we are with them, but if we want to spend time with them, it's what we have to deal with. The alternative is we draw a hard line and they never want to spend time with us again. I think they would realize as they got older we were right, but then you just lost that "precious" time with them. I know, how precious can it be when they are buried in a screen right?!

>I know, how precious can it be when they are buried in a screen right?! For you guys, it is a "better than nothing" situation. When they are older, they might realise they missed that precious time with you. The reinforcement is a big part of it for sure. I think many of my friends wan their kids to spend less time on the screens, but the parent is also on the screens at the same time. It is a role model issue also.

Yes, it can be hard for sure! It's actually interesting to see the difference even between the kids of siblings from the same family. My nieces always had very strict limits on their screen time as children.

Very good reflective work yours, @tarazkp. We are obviously facing a difficult and complex reality. On the one hand, it is known that the digital exercise of our young people helps them to develop certain technological skills. But we also know, from close or referential experience, that it is affecting their attention span, their sociability, but, even more seriously, their proper command of language and communicative expression. It must be confronted at various levels and in various ways. One of them is, undoubtedly, in the family, and another, at school. But this requires prior preparation of both parents and educators. Thank you for sharing your reflections. Best regards.

There's an imbalance between generation perspectives that's why problems arise. They are very well known as the happiest country but they have so many problems too, but maybe they handle it very well and it satisfies people in giving justice. They are still on top because I think their percentage is at the lowest compare to other countries.

This is so true. Growing up with screens everywhere, it's crazy how much it's affecting us without even realizing it. We're all just used to it now, but it's starting to show in ways we can't ignore. It's crazy to see the impact , but at least we're startingg to notice it now

We managed to keep our daughter away from the screen until almost 12 years old, but she is rapidly increasing her screen time. Without having a phone and apps she would become a social outcast in school, so we are slowly giving in...

It is sad to see that a country like Finland, often refers to the happiest place and most advanced in terms of education, is now struggling with things like teen suicide, obesity, and school performance. It makes a lot of sense that screens and digital life are a big part of the problem. The kids that aren't playing or socializing like before, just staring at devices all day. However, Something definitely needs to change. The society need to focus on positive changes and not profit and what will just increase their GDP alone. Humanity should be taken into consideration in anything they do. It is sad that nobody really cares, particularly with the influx of technology these days and the manipulation that comes with it.

What is it like where you are? Are young kids on phones all the time from babies? Has their behaviour changed in anyway compared to when you were a kid?

It is the same here. The majority of the Gen Z parent expose their kids to the phone at an early stage, and this often reduce their appetite to food and even prevent them from doing something meaningful at all. I have witnessed a kid whose phone was taken from her and refused to eat for the whole day until the phone was given back. It is a shame. We believe we are exposing them to technology at early stage, but it doesn't make much sense.

Just talked with a colleague today that it is not easy to study for important exams such as university entrance for this generation as they are smartphone-addicted. We used to play console games and spend much time for them in front of TV., but we didn't miss it while we were just 5 mins away from it :)

>We used to play console games and spend much time for them in front of TV., but we didn't miss it while we were just 5 mins away from it :) And for most kids, the computer, console and TV were in common areas, where parents had some oversight. And, parents weren't addicted to phones either.
