<div class="text-justify"> Discussing parenting today with a client who is a young father and will take the next three months off for parental leave, we discussed the different strategies that people use for raising their kids. This client is a procurement specialist, which means that he is familiar with negotiation techniques and comfortable applying them in his daily work. One of the common approaches when pricing or agreeing upon terms, is using anchors to set a range frame to work with. --- --- > ## Anchoring effect >The anchoring effect is a psychological phenomenon in which an individual's judgments or decisions are influenced by a reference point or "anchor" which can be completely irrelevant. [](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring_effect) For a simple example of this, if I were to sell a car and wanted 10,000 for it, if I set the price at that, I am highly unlikely to get it. However, if I set the price at 11,000, the buyer would be able to negotiate down and feel good about getting a discount, and I can feel good about getting what I wanted, or perhaps even more. Each walks away with a win. Yet, anchoring effects happen in many other areas of life too, where our direction is chosen based on the assumption that the anchor provides. For example, if the car in the above example was placed next to a similar but higher priced car. In comparison to the higher price for similar, the cheaper car seems like a bargain. But it also works in relation to other aspects of life, like when we estimate how long something will take, because once the estimate is made, our brain says the estimate is correct, and we are unlikely to change our estimate, even in light of new information. > But with parenting? The common examples are in a pretty short-term timeframe and are pretty contextual. However, they are all about assumptions made about the initial information which creates the anchor. When it comes to parenting, our initial information about how to do it comes from our own parents and we base our future assumptions about how and why anchored to those points. This means that the anchor weighs down our range of cognitive movement we will make. Often this means that if we have a positive view of the anchor, we are likely to want to repeat that with our own kids. And if we have a negative view of the anchor, we will move in the other direction. Now while a price from a sales anchor can be up, down or no sale, when we are looking at behavioural anchors, there is a far wider selection of choices we can make, but it often sets up a kind of false dichotomy. My parents did this badly, so I will do the opposite with my own children. My parents did it this way and I think I am okay, so it is the right way to do it for my own children. But imagine a child that has been "raised by wolves" and has learned behaviours that are very different to that of society. The same behaviours required for successful survival in the forests, aren't likely to track well into a human community in the modern world, because the context and requirements of survival have changed. However, at a conceptual level, there would still be a lot of overlap in behaviours, where things working together as a pack will yield better results than becoming a lone wolf. But, whether raised by wolves or by humans, a child will identify anchor points and proceed according to the direction they suggest, largely on autopilot. This means that activities will be limited by the starting point, and even if there are better directions to take, these will be ignored or unrecognised because they lay outside of the *familiar.* What many might not know is that "familiar" originally means belonging to a household, and was extended to *the servants.* > We are slaves to the familiar. We do what they say like an obedient child - or we go against what they say like a rebellious child. Whichever way we choose, we are still enslaved by the implication of the rule. We move in the same direction, or we go in the opposite direction, like with the flow of the river or turning upstream. > But we are actually in an ocean. Children resemble their parents in more then the information genetics provides. And the more we anchor against who they are and their behaviours, the less deviation from the path. However, they themselves also went into parenting holding their anchored positions, perpetuating some aspects, and going in the opposite direct of others. But, if we were to take a step back and actually think about *2hat is best* for a particular child, it is likely our subsequent actions based on our anchors is not the right way to go. > But it *feels right.* Because remember, we are comfortable with what we know - *our familiars.* We "own" our behaviours and we have made them a part of our identity, even though we never chose them at all. So what we are actually doing is identifying with something that is not us at all, but an imported and highly customizable set of beliefs and habits. We could change them for healthier options, but we generally don't, because they feel like us, they feel natural, they feel like the right thing to do - even if the results are anything but good. I wonder, if a parent had to choose the behaviours of another person to be the parent of their child and everything was on the table without anchors - what would they choose? It is a hard thought experiment as we are all anchored already, but I suspect that a lot of parents would end up choosing a set that didn't match one to one with how they are currently parenting - so what does that imply? Wolves live by instinct, doing what they do in the moment, based on the information they carry with them. They can't predict what will happen in their future at a significant distance, so they train their pups to do what they do. And the pups grow to do just that. They do adapt to environments over time, but again, this is an instinctual shift in behaviour based on survival. But our own instincts as a human are not much different, becoming replicators of what we know and carry around with us. Our baggage. Some of the baggage is useful, some is harmful, but our automatic behaviours are our instincts saying that what we do is the right thing to do, and when we do it we get rewarded with the feeling of doing the right thing. *Even when it isn't working.* >Even wolves adapt to their environment. Will we? At a base level, parenting is very simple in terms of survival, because the basic needs and processes for children is pretty much the same in the vast majority of cases. However, there are also differences in the needs of children, and there are differences in the changing environment. This also means that if we are applying all of the rules from the past to the current situation, they aren't all going to nurture a good result. We need to be sensitive to the current situation, and the current child. > But habits are convenient. And the assumptions we make about the way things should be, including the way we parent, interact with others, or decide what we like, are usually habitual too. It is far easier to live life by the anchors we know, than discover a new path in unchartered waters, or a trailless forest. Extending the concept of the anchoring effect, known in negotiation, to the field of parenting, hehe. Considering how parents' past experiences act as anchors, limiting adaptability in their current methods, I'm not entirely sure because we are adaptive beings par excellence. A nuance arises: while anchoring is defined by "irrelevant" reference points, parenting itself is a primary database, although not always optimal; we know this, and part of it is indelible in our genetic code. The idea of โโbeing "slaves to the familiar" is normal, but who isn't? The analogies are vivid, although the comparison with wolves might simplify the complexity of human learning versus instinct. We are animals, "rational," yes, but animals.

> We are animals, "rational," yes, but animals. Animals are possibly rational too. Maybe more so? If rationality is acting the best one can on what one knows, animal instinct is precisely that. >although the comparison with wolves might simplify the complexity of human learning versus instinct. The example isn't concerned with learning, it is about what is learned and onboarded as truth. You and I and everyone carries a unique makeup of "truths" that we assume correct, when they are just our perspective of our experience. If we had lived our lives from a different observation point, the same events would elicit a different experience. Raised by wolves, raised by cruel parents, poor parents, loving parents - it is all the same process - the lessons learned that become our personal truths can vary greatly, even amongst people who might have a near identical experience.

The good news is that we can be conscious about what you write and change our behavior, foresee what our children have to be prepared for and adapt our - and consequently their - behavior. That, though, is not the case usually, "raised by wolves" puts it very nicely, as there is a lot of instinct involved in most parenting practices these days. The real ones, not the theoretical. Less consideration, more egoistical survival. The interesting part is that there is no linear conclusion to be made. Although upbringing is very important, we're still influenced a lot by the life after. Parenting also varies due to that. The more exposed we are to experiences, the more the anchors we set in our children vary from our parents'. Also, there are many exterior influences that can force us to raise our children differently - economic and social status, for example. Well, as always, you gave me a lot to think about. > Less consideration, more egoistical survival. Yes. The ego - the "this is who I am" mentality, without actually exploring if that is actually the truth. >Also, there are many exterior influences that can force us to raise our children differently - economic and social status, for example. A child brought up with a scarcity mindset might become more successful financially than their parents, but is that success limited by the original anchor? Is it comparative success rather than reaching full potential success? You know the story of why there are so few taxis in NY city when it rains? Because people take taxis more, so the taxi driver makes their quota (anchor) sooner than normal, and goes home early. There are literally fewer taxis on the road. However, a smart taxi driver would make hay while the sun shines (or while it rains in this case) and work longer, so then on the next sunny day when everyone is out happily walking to work, the tax driver can have a day at the beach instead of waiting around for fares.

>A child brought up with a scarcity mindset might become more successful financially than their parents, but is that success limited by the original anchor? Is it comparative success rather than reaching full potential success? That depends on the case. The scarcity mindset can have several reasons - as you write, one can act decisively against parental anchors, or accept them. And there are probably a thousand nuances. The person can come from a greedy family as much as from a very poor family. Different backgrounds causing the same issue. For the NY taxis: Yes, sure. There's also the story of the fisherman lying at the beach chilling after having caught enough fish for the day, and the business man coming up and telling him how he could make so much more money if he kept fishing and then enjoy life. But the fisherman is already enjoying life. It depends on what the driver or the fisherman *want* in that moment. Being home early with the family and enjoy a nice dinner or board game during the rain has something, too.

Since you used the analogy, have you ever been in a boat and the anchor doesn't quite catch and you find yourself floating further away from the point you hoped to stay at? I wonder what happens if a parent sets the anchor at a specific point hoping for perhaps a little less than that. Then the next generation does it and so on and so forth. Eventually everyone ends up in that "raised by wolves" state which I kind of think is what has happened to society as a whole over the past few decades.

I stay away from boats, but it does bring up an interesting anchor analogy and I reckon you are right. We "drift" from our desired position, because we are anchored to the wrong thing, or in the boat example, not anchored at all, which in itself is a kind of anchor point - one that keeps on moving with the currents of life.

I'm not a parent but kind of a father to my little nephew. I never thought about using negotiation tactics with kids but it makes total sense. Setting that high anchor first definitely works, my 5 year old nephew always negotiates down from my initial offer. Genius approach

It's great hearing this fact about this effect, like I did had an idea but not a depth knowledge about it! "Good" Parenting is actually a very critical and important thing which sets up the mental health of the child because whatever the child feels so he/she will opt the situation upto. Sometimes I do have seen people making up good assumptions and plans for the children but they don't work and it's really a serious situation for them, they do get stressed and anxious, some get angry and that's how it effects the child, one really need to be comfortable with their partner and make us good outcomes about the situation which has arrived, because there's no idea about the what's going to happen the next moment. So giving up a good parenthood to the child first needs a good compatibility within the parents.!

I realize I'd probably choose someone more patient and present than I actually am with my kids. Makes me wonder if I'm parenting from habit rather than intention.

Very deep, this is obviously your area of interest. Anchoring in terms of price negotiation is way simpler concept than when it is applied to parenting. My wife is very much into parenting and read a bunch of books on it plus is more intelligent than me anyway so I just listen to what she is telling me to do in regards to parenting :)

>Anchoring in terms of price negotiation is way simpler concept than when it is applied to parenting. For sure. However, if we were to dive into our own challenges in life, we might find that a lot of it is based on assumptions about the world that we have got from our early anchors. Maybe we could just become better people :)

I must say that I like how you connected the idea of anchoring to parenting. It's true that many of us raise our kids based on how we were raised; either by copying our parents or doing the exact opposite. But like you said, times have changed and people are changing with it, and every child is different. What worked back then might not work now. So it might be difficult to use the same method for the Generation kids. Also, one thing this made me think about is how much we are shaped by what we constantly see around us. It is actually hard to become something you have never seen before or modelled in your immediate environment. Thatโs probably why so many of us stick to familiar patterns, even when they donโt serve us or our children well. We are wired to repeat whatโs known, not because itโs always right, but because it feels safe.

I think that different environments might lead us to completely different behaviors. I wonder whether thereโs a way to break those anchors and create new, healthier patterns.

I am not sure if they can be broken or not, but they can be brought into the awareness so to limit their impacts.

Ah the perfect plan bound to fail. It is the curse of GenX and it will reverberate! The major flaw in that is the logic and overestimating the intellect of our young ones. I can remember dozens of times working at the toy store when parents would ask for popular toy ideas and ignore the age recommendations because โoh mine is more advanced than the typical x-year old.โ The flaw in that noobs logic is the logic. A child doesnโt even have a shred of foresight or an inkling of ability to reason until they are at least 8. I tried the tactic of encouraging them to question what was told to them for what I thought were good reasons. โThat is a square is t it?โ No daddy it is a circle. Now, I have little ones who question almost any truth they are told by any adult and donโt respect authority. Everyone knows how to fight until they are punched in the face. Parenting is a long string of punches in the face but worth it.

Haha glad you got the source of that wisdom. ;) Mike Tyson would make either the worst or best parent I think. Turns out he has 7 children! So he must be the best or absent.
