<div class="text-justify"> Just as I was going to bed.... You might have read a few minutes ago that the consensus witnesses have initiated and [Steem has gone through a softfork.](https://steemit.com/steem/@softfork222/soft-fork-222) This shouldn't affect anyone... well... it will affect a few accounts.  With Steemit Inc and the initial mined stake from 2016 being sold to Justin Sun, the stake that was earmarked and promised for Steem development suddenly was up in the air. The Softwork has *temporarily* put some restrictions on several Steemit Inc accounts in in order to secure the Steem blockchain. If you didn't know what witnesses are for, *securing the Steem blockchain* is their first and foremost task, and it is their job to do what they deem necessary in order to do that job. I have only just heard this news, like most other people and therefore I have not yet made up my mind on whether this is a positive or negative. However, perhaps this need not be either and this state could be a neutral position, until we sort out what is going on. Over the last week, there has been a great amount of uncertainty and mixed-messaging coming out of the Tron Team and I am guessing this is what has instigated this move. Uncertainty creates fears and people on Steem have worked very hard to be here after 4 years and therefore, it is natural that we will protect it. The question comes up however about the reasoning, as while the ninja mine is a threat to decentralization, this move has essentially frozen the funds of several privately held accounts and as far as I know, this sets a new precedent on Steem. Is it a good precedent? Well, it depends on how one looks at it I guess as while this move might seem extreme to some, it also shows that the witnesses are very much doing their job to protect the chain, at any cost. This could backfire and create a lot of negative publicity, but at the same time it shows that the decisions we make through witness voting has indeed led to the protection of the chain, a decentralized protection. Remember that that this is a softfork and can therefore be removed, which means voting for other witnesses who do not support it could lead to a rollbackfork (I have o idea if that is what it should or would be called), that would return the previous status quo. For me, I am here on Steem, come hell or high water, and therefore I am going to ride this wave just as I do all the other ones, with Steem coming first. I am not yet sure that this is a move that supports that end, but I do believe that the mixed-messages coming from Tron a problematic if the uncharitable view of their intentions is the reality. >For me, I am here on Steem, come hell or high water, and therefore I am going to ride this wave just as I do all the other ones, with Steem coming first. I am not yet sure that this is a move that supports that end, but I do believe that the mixed-messages coming from Tron a problematic if the uncharitable view of their intentions is the reality. This is how I feel exactly. The importance is what will the community do, and what will the outcome be for those that simply come to create and share? As for the witnesses, governance becomes infinitely more difficult the bigger something grows - which is something that should be welcomed. I feel as though the messaging could've been different. It's okay to feel threatened, as that's what I read from the announcements, but a declaration of independence would've been received completely differently.

We going to roll over that again....crypto's have been determined to have value so people can proceed in court to sue when wronged. This just may be the big one that accelerates those behind blockchain technology that they aren't beyond the long arm of the law. Before it was just small fries filing complaints trying to make a pile big enough for someone to take notice....now they've done went up against someone much richer than them who could hire a lawyer and be in court in no time. At best their only legal option was to power down and leave steem and before making radical changes that could result in potential losses at best justinsuns options before doing so would be notification so they could remove their investment, and that's exactly what both parties would get told in a court of law. Justin has no right of determination over their stake without notice of change and they have no legal right over his to force him to tell what his plan of actions are. A judge would tell them he can do whatever he wants as long as there is sufficient notification to opt out. (I have no stake in this game but I will be trying to figure out how to unvote witnesses as I proxied them to some else whom I have no idea who they voted, all's I know is I don't want to end up in some legal hassle should that happen and be accused of being supportive of a illegal maneuver by supporting those who made the move.)

Justin had plenty of time to vote in different witnesses with his stake. He didn't, which means he trusted the ones we have (as do I), to keep the chain secure. If I ever started tweeting contradictory gibberish; and couldn't be contacted for a week I'd consider it a favour if the witnesses froze my stake and minimised my opportunity to damage the chain, at least until I had a chance to discuss it with them. I don't think this will be a big deal. He bought into a chain controlled by witnesses; those witnesses used their best judgement in temporarily locking his stake.

Thereβs nothing quite like a coup dβΓ©tat. Glad I read the @softfork222 post right after it came out. In my experience, once a post has more than about a hundred comments, it becomes harder and harder to load. 300+ and they rarely load at all (at least for me, your mileage may vary).
