Take a Fake in the Mirror

I mean, I kind of understand how Instafamous celebrities have to do it, as it is the expectation set by the "industry". And I even get why normal people do it too. But how much is too much and what are the ramifications of it? 

Oh...

I am talking about digital manipulation of personal images....

*We live in a strange world.*

There are plenty of example online, just check "photoshop selfie fails" and see what people do to their images to appear "more or less" than they actually are, as the background warps as they pinch and pull to "enhance" their true selves. But, who are they doing it for and what is the affect on the mind of looking your digital best, knowing that the reality is something very different?

Firstly, what is the point of posting selfies anyway? Sure, the odd one here and there, but this constant stream of sharing images to strangers in the hope for positive reinforcement, seems more like an illness, doesn't it? Just imagine going to someone's house for "slide night" and instead of seeing their holiday pictures (already boring), all they show are pictures of themselves in much the same pose, with much the same expression on their face.

But, online life is not normal, is it? In the digital realm, you can be who you want to be, because there is the sense that no one knows for sure, there is some level of pseudonymity. And, while for a long time people have been faking the skills they have by using Google'd personality and now AI, through image enhancement apps, they are faking who they are physically too. But of course, just like faking skills, the proof is in the pudding and no matter how good that stream of images look, each day, people have to wake up to their reflection staring back from the mirror and see all those imperfections that can't be removed.

Perhaps at some point, we will have such good AR tech that we can put on some glasses and walk around, seeing people as we want to see them, or they want us to see them, rather than the reality of what they actually are. Perhaps we will live in virtual worlds of designed personal avatars that allow us to be exactly who we want to be in any given moment. But still, reality exists.

Every compliment received on a digitally enhanced image, is a reminder that it is a lie, that what they are complimenting is not me at all. It is no wonder that if people are getting their sense of self and self-confidence through this false image perspective, there is going to be a high degree of depression and suicide, because there is a high degree of personal conflict between, the way I feel, the image I portray, and the reality of me.

And, worse still is perhaps if I start to believe the compliments are genuinely about me, as I am likely to get a splitting of my personality, and due to the positive reinforcement on one side and the negative on the other due to the voice in my head, I will start to associate with the digital version of myself and like it more, than the real version. And, while this charade can be lived for periods, eventually I would have to go outside into the world as myself - the version of me I don't like. *Real me.*

This is more than sucking in the gut when a pretty girl walks past, or wearing dark colors because it is slimming, it is changing the image we hold of ourselves by removing imperfections, smoothing lines, making waists smaller, arms bigger - and reinforcing it over and over and over again through hundreds of images over a long period of time. People talk about the negative affect that the magazine industry has on body image by presenting a false reality through photoshop and the use of cherrypicked models - how impactful is it when the model is us?

And, we are doing this to ourselves for what, attention? Is that the driving factor here? It makes sense as we live in a society where attention is gold and we are incentivized to get as much of it as we can, even if it doesn't bring us anything of value, other than the likes and stars that make us feel good about ourselves - or bad when we don't get enough. 

But, someone gets something out of it, don't they? Attention is what we might seek, but what the platform owners seek is data and then, there is the massive industry of applications built just to support social media platforms, all of them using various types of mechanisms to pull value from the userbase - mostly through ad revenue.

And perhaps this is what it comes down to, where ad revenue is the goal and the data collection is a facilitation tool for supporting it. Not only are "we the product" on the social platforms, but we are also the "buyer" on the same platforms, so the incentive is to keep us there, generating data, spending money, by any means possible, even if the cost is people's lives.

And, just think about the change in time using the internet over the last years.

Currently, the country with the most time spent on social media per day is the Philippines, with online users spending an average of three hours and 53 minute on social media each day. I like that last sentence.

That is 14.35 hours a week, or *two full days* of work. That is "just" 40% of a fulltime job!

And this is what it all comes down to. 

>Money.

Making people spend time on social media earning nothing but stars and hearts, is a job people and a business mode for corporations. The more time on site they get, the more money they make through ad bookings. They convert all of our attention, into income and profits for shareholders, while the user base descends down the slippery slope of metal ill-health.

So many people these days are deriving their sense of worth from a false reality they have curated for themselves, yet don't seem to see how much harm it is doing, to them, and the communities in which we live. Those magazines with photoshopped models are selling a product in the hope we will buy, and we are no different - we are selling ourselves. 

While we say we want to be seen for "how we are", we have productized ourselves through manipulated images in an attempt for attention, making us objects.

*We are doing it to ourselves.*

But, no matter how hard we try, that mirror in the bathroom still shows the lines, the scars, the belly and the undefined arms - because no matter how many filters a digital gets applied image, physical reality hasn't changed. 

Psychological reality on the other hand....

But I get you—I feel the same way about this and other things. Don't really get it. I mean, I do. It's because they don't feel very good about themselves (probably in part because they compare themselves with everyone else posting fake selfies) so they are looking for that positive reinforcement, kind words or likes or both, as you say. But I also don't.

Agree with what you say, but I also don't see any solution coming anytime soon. Those most mentally and emotionally vulnerable will continue to fall down this part. 

I think the next step is indeed AR. This will make the problem worse. Can you imagine teenage bullying with AR? Anyone who doesn't have the latest AR tech won't be able to see the cool kid's latest avatar. Loser! Oh man....  I really hope AR doesn't arrive until my kids are past their teenage years.

Yeah, I've never been one to modify my images even with fun effects, I don't see the point in it and I generally don't engage with people who do that regularly. However, each person make their own choices and whatever consequences come to them for said choices is their deal. I have no say in it, so I just don't pay attention to it.

In the end, we don't really need special glasses to see the world as we want to see it, we only need to focus on the aspects that we decide to see and that becomes our reality, even in front of the mirror. That's why self-knowledge is so critical, because, whether we realize it or not, we're constantly reshaping our world based on our desires and needs, most of them unknown to us. In that sense, "fake" images may actually express a deeper realty rather than a mere lie.

This is a really well written and thought out article. I'm not one for filters as I have no desire to change the way I look unless I'm using a funny filter for a joke. But for sure my partner sends all her snapshots and TikToks with one particular filter all the time.

To me, I kind of think about it as quick virtual makeup. She is really good at doing herself up when we go out, so in a sense, the filter she uses skips the step where she has to do all the foundation and blush. I'm good with that, I like that she can save the time to "cheat" these pictures. The reasons why she does not want to post natural photos is up to her, but I respect her reasons and don't question her for them.

She knows I could care less about the filters and the makeup because I love her for the person she is, not so much her polished makeup look. But I support her because it makes her feel happy to share this version of herself. I'm not going to speculate if this is causing emotional stress on her because I support her, but she knows she can talk to me if she feels like it is becoming an issue.

And at the end of the day, she looks good in her content and I enjoy it because it makes her happy to share this with her friends and the rest of the world. Good for her if she wants more attention, I do not mind, I am not jealous of her getting attention. What I do mind is her ordering new makeup pallets when she still has plenty good ones at home. So if the filters can save some makeup and reduce how much h she buys, then I'm all for the filters. Keep em coming and use the makeup for special occasions.

I don't think selfies on their own are a problem if there is a nice background, except the bathroom mirror selfie...that's tasteless, worst than the over distorted mind-bending handrail. I do agree that people/influencers put too much importance on excessive photoshop or selfies everyday.  There is a lot of pressure to look like this or that. Even in the real world, women get judged too harshly on their looks and that is part of the problem that creates the self esteem issues to begin with. I'm not sure a guy can actually understand that.

For example, I work construction in the oil industry with mostly men and show up to work in the appropriate attire for what I do, hoody and jeans and the level of respect I get from my work brothers is based on if I am cute enough to be respected or not rather than my skill. That's the society we face every day, hard to not get a body complex. That's obviously just one example to put it in context of how society judges the looks of others.

 For an influencer, looking "less than" would mean no income for their social based business regardless of their skill or product they may provide. In other words if we look a little plump or not enough in the behind or chest, whatever other criteria society places on looks our products are not worthy of consumption. just a thought I'm not sure a guy actually experiences much of in life, you men get judged on your skills or what you offer, not how chesty you are for your worth.

One of the interesting conflicts of society I find, as women are the most judgmental of the looks of both other women, and men. And men understand it too, because they are openly judged to their faces. :)

As a man with predominantly female friends, men get judged a lot too. Generally, when women are judged harshly, it is by people that they have no interest in, at least personality-wise. Men however might go out on a limb for someone they are interested in, and then get torn apart, because they are too tall, too short, too big, not big enough, too fat, too skinny - and women are happy to say this to their face. Women don't have the monopoly on being judged physically, but what parts get judged might differ somewhat.

**and then get torn apart,** You have a point there, at least in a romance setting, not in a professional one... that is also equally unfair and mean for the men to. I don't do that without reason so it may have not came to mind I suppose, this goes both ways.

I was more professionally speaking. A woman with skills in any professional setting DID NOT choose to cash in on looks but rather a practical approach to career shouldn't be disregarded based on looks if the skills and experience are there. In a romantic setting, attraction to the other matters for reasons we don't have to list here, a lack of attraction to a partner would result in lack in certain department, maybe the delivery needs to be more tasteful.

Getting passed over for those that have no skills or standards because my ass might be to flat or whatever else, it has really has nothing to do with teaching/performing construction skills. After 15 years I have seen all kinds of uncomfortable moments on the topic. I suppose once they see me in my regular clothing and realize they were perhaps wrong on their judgment, it helps weed out the crusty from the worthy and yes if approached romantically, I wont hold back on giving them a taste of their own medicine to the crusty kind.

It puts it in perspective that the opposite gender psychologically does not empathize with the other, going both ways. Hence society judges too much in general and puts too much emphasis on "looks", each gender being guilty in their own way.

**And this is an industry people "aspire" to be part of** I wasn't speaking of those who rely on looks alone but more those who sell an actual product or real life service that is purchased and used. If one has a worthy product, sales shouldn't be based on looks if they chose to have their face represent their brand, I will agree both genders are responsible for judging inappropriately.

I mostly work with men, so most of my friends are men and they don't hold back on critiquing a stranger just walking by and are pretty harsh. I guess we just have experiences in opposite settings with the same problem being manifested in different way why people feel the need to alter their photos beyond recognition of reality.

I was just reading few days ago a study about how, ultimately, Instagram and co is guilty of all our self-image related issue, and how there are two kinds of confidence and we are learning to get the wrong one. Fake it til you make it is kind of a myth. Is the difference between normal people dressed in Gucci and wearing Rolex to look rich, and the billionaire dressed in white simple top and jeans, not caring about it projected image because he knows his value. Confidence is not learned or showed, it is internalized, not externalized, there is nothing to prove to others.

I feel your argument here is quite a tired one by now - it is in fact quite far worse than how you depict it. Children have grown up knowing no other way of life now, and suicide, depression and bullying aside, we now have people who simply can't imagine a life outside of a curated, digital existence. 

There has been a massive cultural shift where OnlyFans is becoming a societal norm, not an open secret like prostitution. But in a lot of ways, though safer, is worse, as your entire physical being, anything private about your external self, is public and freely available (yeah people can surely just download from third party websites with no effort at all, just google it). And that will be with these millions of young women for the rest of their lives. My student, now graduated to Berkeley, talks about how one of his fellow students started promoting their onlyfans at the end of a lecture. Imagine it. 

The breakdown of traditional family values might be progressive to many, but I fear it doesn't come from a sense of progression at all, but more a regression from a collective failure to raise people who are able to commit, an economy that makes it unaffordable to raise children, and technology that makes it easy to devalue oneself to a degree where suicide is just a negative comment away. 

If you've ever seen JoeyBToonz, he highlights a lot of this stuff while promoting being creative, wholesome and such, but also funny. But to be honest, the footage he shares is kind of tragic. Check out his commentaries, but one of the more tragic things he brought to my attention is the 'alien lizard' man or whatever. A fully tattood human, whose tongue is split, his body filled with various modifications and holes, teeth ground down, eyes blackened, penis split in two, and two fingers from each hand removed - among a lot more. 

There are surgeons out there happily decapitating people, whose only end result is, inevitably, suicide. All in the name of social media.

Your conclusion is beautiful and I believe that many should take it as a warning.

I confess that in the past I made a lot of use of social media, especially instagram, then as time went by I practically stopped, Hive is also partly responsible for this heh heh!

However, I believe that there is nothing more boring than selfies, for heaven's sake, every now and then we can also do some but without exaggerating.
As far as I'm concerned, I've never been a fan of filters, maybe because I don't know how to use them well, maybe because there aren't any that can improve my image heh heh!

However, I believe that today many point to what is a virtual improvement, losing sight of the fact that self-improvement must be something real and above all it must be done for oneself and not because we want to appear better in the eyes of others; among other things, in my opinion, this last thing becomes natural if we actually do what is necessary to improve.

I am  the same. Don't use it now - only Hive. Incentive matters too :)

There seems to be a different mentality between the people who take a lot of selfies, and those who don't. I wonder if there was a study done on depression across the two groups, what it would say.

I have always looked at "selfie culture" as a sickness... and basically knew and believed that few share my viewpoint. There is the occasion for a legitimate selfie... however, it's quite discernable when it's more of a sickness and a form of vanity being given expression.
