The default journey
<div class="text-justify">

When I came onto Hive at the start of 2017, I didn't know anyone here. Armed with my ability to write okayishly and some relatively decent camera skills, I went to work producing content. It wasn't bad and it wasn't necessarily good, but it was *mine* - very, very much mine. I think that my upbringing surrounded by the original art of my father and my love for books made me value originality and I would be *ashamed* to put forward work that wasn't mine. My life experience has influenced me to think as I do and be as I be.

https://i.imgur.com/pXB3ngr.jpg

Influences are key to our life journey and like it or not, we *are all* influenced.

I have been influenced by many people here, but after bumbling around for months largely "post by post" and alone, I got invited into a chat and met @acidyo, who is probably one of the greatest influences on my Hive journey. If you don't know him, he is into curating content and values original work. He is also very much into crypto - which is where he has influenced me the most over the years - *for better and worse.* Mostly better - but I *held* all the way down...

Influences and *influencers* have a massive effect on the path people take in this world and it is no different on Hive. I have done plenty of little thought experiments around this topic over the years and observed a lot and there is one *general* pattern - a person's first connections tend to put them on a path for the future. One example would be my brother @galenkp who joined 6 months after I did - would his approach be the same if I my approach had been different?

Imagine a scenario if I introduced him and:

1. I was a shitposter
2. I only selfvoted
3. I only played Splinterlands
4. I was a known plagiarist
5. I was blacklisted
6. I only posted Actifit
7. I didn't comment
8. I posted short content only
9. I link dropped discords
10. I raged and threw tantrums
11. I was a bigger asshole

This list could be much longer, but you get the point

My question is, would it have altered his approach to posting and engagement?

There is a saying "birds of a feather, flock together" and perhaps this is also what could happen on Hive depending on how someone finds the community. For example, if a person has Hive introduced as a place to post low quality content or plagiarize in the hope of getting some big votes - would the new recruit do differently? I wonder how many people with potential have created accounts and had them burned because they didn't use their potential and instead, did what the person who invited them does.

My brother isn't the only recruit I have brought in, but he is by far the most successful. The intuition is there and perhaps some think his success is because I am relatively well supported here, but - he came in mid-2017 and - *I wasn't well supported then* - he has worked hard to be where he is. What has made him successful is that for 3 years he has not only been participating - he has been putting his best foot forward and offering himself daily. You might have read this at the bottom of his posts:

>Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - *Tomorrow isn't promised.*

It isn't an aspiration - he lives it. Which is why when he posts - his posts are very much his. He is designing his journey and he is participating and *trying* daily because, *tomorrow isn't promised.*

And I think this is where a lot of people fail, because rather than understanding their potential and using it well, they do what others do and often, they do what their first contact with the community does. The fastest path to failure is to hang around with failures. Sounds harsh, doesn't it? But what I mean is that people tend to reflect their environment, so if a person spends the majority of their time with people who behave well, they will likely behave well too - if they are spending their time with criminals, they will likely lean that way also - is it the chicken, or the egg?

In my experience on Hive, behavior is not connected to future potential, it is heavily influenced by peers. I have watched talented people degrade into a cesspool, I have watched talented people escape the sludge and - I have watched very mediocre people escape and alter their experience heavily in the positive. I remember one person who was posting memes grabbed from the internet and getting downvoted for it, turn into a person who was consistently getting curie and STEM votes - what changed? *His friends.* His friends influenced him to use his skills as an engineer instead of his skills as a copypasta - and while his English wasn't perfect, he was able to put together interesting content that people engaged enjoyed.

You want a different result - change your surroundings.
*Remember to change your habits too.*

The amount of people who believe they are smart enough to be immune to the influence of their environment is astounding, but it is a blindness. Funnily, many of these same people believe themselves to be influential - another blindness. As my brother says, *design and create your ideal life,* this is what many people are doing when they choose their surroundings and the company they keep.

At least on Hive - *no one* is in some kind of caste system due to their economic status, no one is forced to read a particular post or spend time in a particular genre, no one is made to behave in a certain way or talk about particular topics - it is all free choice. For the most part, there aren't even algorithms to suggest where someone *might* want to spend their time - people have to find their own way.

So, if a person can find their own way and ends up spending their time with people who do not encourage them to bring out the best in themselves, *who's fault is it?* However, this journey is going to be influenced by their first contact too - their friend, their brother or some scammer on YouTube - some "authority". Remember, that someone who has never been on Hive will assume that someone who has is more experienced, has an understanding of best practices and locations.

*I have been to London twice. I am not your go to as a tour guide, nor could I tell you the best places to visit and spend your time. What I could tell you is, *what I know,* which is where I have been and spent *my* time.*

You see the issue? I am biased and all I can do is *lead by example.*

Do you ever think about who and how you have been influenced on Hive - have you paid attention to changes in the way you post, or the applications you use, or if you engage more or less because of the people you are spending time with? Do you joke more with some authors, do you feel positive about the future with others, do some authors make you feel bad?

>Do you know the factors that have affected your journey so far? Do you know who?

People often cite their conditions for why they can't do or must do something, without acknowledging that they have the ability to affect their conditions in some way - their surroundings, their *attitude.* But, people fear loss and because they *identify* themselves with what they do today - doing different would mean giving themselves up, losing themselves - even if to do so would be to reach deeper into their pool of potential and become a better version of themselves.

Don't act like you don't have choices on Hive - you choose your path - actively - *or by default.*

I'm really glad this is the first post I read after coming back here!... Last month was rough for me, and I needed this reminder to write my "own" original stuff.

It hit home for me too, because while I blame, what happened to me for not posting for the last 30 days, I'll be first to admit that I had the chance to write anything and it was just an unnecessary lack of motivation that I could've powered through...

------------------
If you want me to name the person that influenced what I wrote the most on (previously) Steemit, I would say @Jayna. While I stopped last year, her #FiftyWords initiative made me work hard to write a new story each week. I'm glad I knew her through the blockchain. She's still with us on #Hive, though after the initiative ended we don't interact as much.

You doing okay now?

>it was just an unnecessary lack of motivation that I could've powered through...

Sometimes it can be hard for everyone to write, some people always find it hard. When I do get demotivated to write, I write about something that does motivate me. Generally, there is always something.

> If you lay with dogs, sooner or later you are going to get fleas.

My old man was a genius about some things.

My second post on Steem drew a visit from Cheetah. I was insulted and offended. I OWNED those words and photographs. Then I contacted Steemcleaners and they were helpful and kind but adamant. Previously published material was verboten.

So much for my easy path to fame and fortune :) I didn't do THAT again. And losing a .03 payout got my absolute attention. I actually tried to be the change, more or less successfully.

You are correct. I chose to emulate good writers and worked hard to be one. I met people like me and stuck with them. Because of that Cheetah vote I wasted very little time chasing whale votes (a VERY popular way when I was new) and set about trying to fortify and improve my business.

Who I followed and affiliated with were absolutely my choice, and I could have gone either way. Looking back, it's one of the choices that I'm really happy with.

>My second post on Steem drew a visit from Cheetah.

I think I had a couple too. I didn't know there were bots at all here at that point :D I knew so little about any of this, I just wrote and posted and started with some of my old work, because it is mine. It is funny to think how much I have added since that time.

The other thing that is to be pointed at here is, none of us come in as blank slates - yet there is the tendency for people to assume two new accounts are identical. It is not the case - skill and experience vary greatly.

>Who I followed and affiliated with were absolutely my choice, and I could have gone either way. Looking back, it's one of the choices that I'm really happy with.

The volume of work changes depending on which way you choose to go :)

I still have a couple of hundred well researched and accurate posts on antique motorcycles. When I was working for that guy I made my license requirements very clear. Single use license, I owned all of it. I had absolutely unique content that had only been published once. Seemed perfect.

I have actually used some of the research in subsequent posts. But the ease and comfort was taken out of the deal 😂 It took a year until I was comfortable enough with the nuances here until I was comfortable with using the research and the photos.

Have you ever followed someone on Hive, thinking they were one type of person, only to find out their true colors later - many months after posting and commenting back/forth on each other's posts? It happens, just like in life.

Reason: the internet, even with the pseudo anonymous blockchain, is still connected to real life. At some point, the baggage that we all carry, will find its way into the ether of the interwebs. We will emerge with a name. Anonymous or not.

People are only human. We err, have faults, feel, experience joy, stress, love, hate, compassion.... It's all part of a day in the life! Hive or Steem or IRL 👍

>Have you ever followed someone on Hive, thinking they were one type of person, only to find out their true colors later...
>It happens, just like in life.

Maybe it is like dating expectations. A person comes into Hive expecting it to be something or expecting they should behave in a certain way, even if it is not their way or suitable for them. So, they fake it. Then the audience accepts the person as is only to discover that when they start to revert to their normal personality, they are upset as they have built an expectation based on first/early impressions. "You changed"

>At some point, the baggage that we all carry, will find its way into the ether of the interwebs. We will emerge with a name. Anonymous or not.

So this happens. We all have real lives and life pressures to deal with and if you think about your close friends that you get to observe over time, they change too. My friends go through new loves, divorces, new careers, unemployment, new houses and failing businesses. It would be crazy to expect them to always behave in a certain way when their conditions can change so much. So... This:

>People are only human. We err, have faults, feel, experience joy, stress, love, hate, compassion.... It's all part of a day in the life! Hive or Steem or IRL

I remember that in the year 2018 I started with a group, which eventually disintegrated. I must say I felt a little lost, especially since I still had a very low reputation. I read a lot of good and bad posts. And I commented a lot too. But over time, people got to know not only their authors but also their readers, their style. Over time you know which author you're going to laugh with, which one you're going to reflect with, and which one is going to vibrate the smallest fiber of your being. We are in a community and as such, we get to know each other. Your blog is a place I always come back to. Greetings, @tarakzp

Yes! I think this is important to remember. We build relationships here in the same way as anywhere else and these relationships affect our mood heavily. We learn who we can trust, who we can't.

Yeah, a guy invited me in June 2017, donated an SBI share to me and I was on my own.
Now my trade being charity always drew a special kind of people.
Some old Tsu veteran friends also turned up in support and someone delegated 250,000 SP to me.

I have a suspicion who it was, but won't name the person in case I am mistaken.
Luckily people left me alone to do my own thing and over time I was fortunate to meet a few true friends.
That's all that a man needs to walk the road sticking to authentic posts.

All was and is still not plain sailing, as it requires hard work, persistence and honesty to continue, but I have always enjoyed it .
Talking about honesty and plagiarism, I had one early run in with the authorities that warned me about one photo in my posts. Saying that it was previously published.
Yes it was and it was me that published it on my Facebook post. So that was sorted out amicably.

The great thing that I found on hive, is that there is always someone that one can turn to for advice.

It is interesting how varied people's journeys here can be and how much or little support some need to participate. What I have found however, is integrity and consistency seems to matter. It is hard at times for many people to maintain consistency as life gets in the way. Integrity is something else.

>The great thing that I found on hive, is that there is always someone that one can turn to for advice.

Indeed and without integrity it is all only an empty shell, no matter the content.

That my friend has always kept us going.

Do you guys have any "Deep Heat" or "Voltaren" muscle ointment?
A smear and massage on the painful spots after a hot shower can create miracles to restore sore muscles.

I believe on top of who influences you in Hive, there is also who influences you out of Hive.
Most of us face different situations in our regular relationships than in those we build here. In this space, everyone feels comfortable with Crypto but out there there are many skeptical and even some who still believe this is illegal or some kind of criminal industry. Newcomers, especially young ones, are used to immediate easy things, and most of the time lack the patience Hive requires to build a profile and start earning some decent amounts per post. When you join, it is key to have an experienced buddy who can lead you "realistically" to behave in a way you can get the most out of your capabilities and avoid doing what others do if it is not something you feel comfortable with as that is a direct path to failure.

For sure!

People carry a lot of baggage in with them without realising that it is getting in their way of being their best. Real life had all sorts of challenges involved, but it is up to us as individuals to navigate them. This includes our conditioned impatience and fears.

One way to overcome personal hurdles is through building healthy relationships with those who can actually help.

Lol. I wish you all the best. They are your friends one minute and the next they want you gone but financially it's downhill if you ain't stable!

You have held your ground time and time again, you deserve the best of it all.

Dapplr is how I will get myself back in the game! It is an incredible opportunity to take the community wherever I go which makes it easier for engagement! I love it 🙌

This was a great reading. Was just thinking about influences in life and it's true. Our surroundings have the biggest impact, if we want or not, we will be influenced somehow. It's possible to avoid some influences (the negative ones I hope) if you are always present in the moment, but it can be really hard.

I think positive influence is only good for humanity but that is also personal to everyone, what they find positive for themselves. This is also already based on their understanding of life, that has been influenced before. So it's a cycle and one reason why it's so hard to get back if you are struggling.

As you said, you need to be aware of them. I reckon that a lot of the things that influence us the most are actually outside of our awareness to a large degree, subtle nudges we don't notice.

I have thought about what it might be like to grow up in a ghetto, surrounded by overwarked and underpaid people, high unemployment, crime, violence etc - it is hard to break that cycle and no one chooses to be born into it.
