<div class="text-justify"> My daughter is a little like me, she has mood swings where *occasionally* she will rage and then then minutes later, be the sweetest little angel again and apologize for her behavior. I don't rage that often these days - I have learned a little in my years. I hope that eventually, she will work out some balance and find a way to control her emotional outbursts, as in my view, emotions are private and showing them is a choice, not a right. I think the nonsense of "show your feelings" that has been encouraged the last few decades has created emotional tyrants, incentivized even further by disconnected social networks that encourage and incentivize drama. But, I also think that people believe that others should behave like them and react like them too, which isn't going to work either. One of the areas I see this happen regularly is when it comes to the *recovery* after negative events, for example a break-up or a death. There seems to be some kind of cultural "normal" that says there should be a grieving period or, a period where a person is meant to be sad, some generalized time frame on when is "too soon" to smile again, date again or make a joke about tragedy. It seems that if a person is perceived as moving on too fast, they are rushing into things or didn't care enough about whatever it was they are moving on from. It never seems to come to mind that for whatever reason, a person can accept circumstances and move on from it faster than another, as if emotional control doesn't work that way. I see emotional control more like emotional fitness, something that can be trained like the body and just like the recovery period after strenuous exercise is going to depend on past training and experience, mental recovery is going to depend on someone's mental condition. Moving fast doesn't mean fit, if soon after going out at a sprint, a breakdown arrives. In my experience, it is the ones who are able to accept circumstances quickly and move forward who are the most reliable under stressful conditions, those who can keep a cool head under fire, focus on the problems at hand and think toward solutions. Sometimes, it is the ability to postpone some emotional reactions until a more appropriate time, but when that time comes, the ability to actually control reactions seems to mean that overcoming the negative is a much faster process and while there is a slowing, there is not a complete stop to function - there is always a rolling start into the next phase. Most of us do not think much about our habits other than a cursory glance and wishing that we could stop this, or do more of that. In general, we have built our processes in childhood through experience and mimicry of our surrounds and never look at them again, we just assume that they are good enough. This is a strange perspective to take considering that we know that we change over time and, we live in a world that is constantly changing around us. It is hard to imagine that the processes and strategies developed as a child are going to be suitable to continually face the world decades into the future - but yet, there are still plenty of people who throw tantrums like petulant children, despite being adults. Emotional fitness is different to physical and mental, but at the same time, the three are all connected, all influence each other. "Blind rage" is a pretty good example of this, as it shuts down thought and physical control processes and the emotional triggers take control of mind and body - enacting and exacting as feelings desire. Generally in violence, often violence that is later regretted. I have several stories through my life where lack of emotional control has cost people a great deal in their lives, including the lives of those they love. Domestic violence might result in a "it'll never happen again" apology, but there is no recourse for a knife in the heart. Regardless of what might be said after the fact, emotionally unstable people can't be trusted, especially under times of stress. Rather than leave reaction up to chance, I believe it is a better approach to develop emotional fitness prior to needing it - prior to the stress or circumstances that lead to even mild outbursts. Just like investing for future monetary gain, building emotional control prepares us for being able to act under pressure when it is required, sometimes this will lead to large rewards and sometimes - very large *savings.* Shorten the recovery period and be ready sooner to welcome the knock of opportunity. I am trying to move back that way a bit, as I used to include a lot more than I have over the last two years. Part of the issue has been no PC, just a very crappy laptop that struggles with the net, let alone anything to process.

All in on Hive? :) Where do you actually live if you are willing to share? Old house, old laptop, struggling with the net and processing power :) I can not live with a slow PC, it is probably worth more than my car i'm driving, but on the other hand i spend far more time in front of PC than in a car :)

Well, i dont know but i guess you have experienced more and i feel your thoughts concerning emotions are relative . I look ar emotions as energy in motion and i feel you need to release it for you to move on as fast as possible. I buy the idea that emotions should be kept private because most of the time you might actually wrong a lot of people wuth this emotion that you let loose. I like the post

Little draft for posh. - https://twitter.com/Andruto2/status/1257978261134598144 > I think the nonsense of "show your feelings" that has been encouraged the last few decades has created emotional tyrants, incentivized even further by disconnected social networks that encourage and incentivize drama. Wisely! How many mistakes did this realization cost you? :)

I know exactly what you are saying here as I have experienced this. It doesn't mean you care any less but can move on controlling your emotions and feelings. I have been called cold before but that is not true as I tend to hide my emotions being strong for everyone else around me.

My friend, you are so right. Emotional fitness is one of the most important attributes one can have. I also know from painful experience some outcomes of losing control. If you begin getting loud or physical, you've already lost the chance to convey what you'd be trying to have expressed.

Very important issue, especially in the context of raising children. A balanced emotional intelligence is a never-ending battle, one we need more tools to fight. Beautiful pictures. My two daughters and my step-daughter have volatile tempers. They have not been easy to handle, considering my temper can be even worse. I have made quite a few adjustments and there lies the key. Loving discipline, example, communication

This current situation will certainly boil the mentally weak and unstable to the surface. I am pleasantly surprised there have only been smaller isolated acts of violence. I also fear a very large historically violent event is near. I am going to keep avoiding large cities, large crowds, and keep my head on a swivel. As I always have. You said.... ***"Domestic violence might result in a "it'll never happen again" apology, but there is no recourse for a knife in the heart. Regardless of what might be said after the fact, emotionally unstable people can't be trusted, especially under times of stress."*** Very prophetic words......

Reminds me of some family friends. The mum had more than a dozen brain tumours removed over the course of a decade. This altered her personality; and as much as her husband loved her, he grieved for her loss in the years before she died. The kids, however, didn't start grieving until she actually died; and were furious when he started dating again only a few months after the funeral. Really sad. I remember your post about that girl who murdered her brother. It was excellent. (The post, not the murder) #toosoon

Yay, such cool photos he and she is such a cutie. I have lost my cool maybe twice in severe situations in the past 20 years my friend. Once almost arrested and the second time defending a refugee. That's it. Emotional control can indeed be trained, but one has to watch out for overdoing it. They say that it is important to cry. I don't cry period. The problem is that one becomes too "cold". Take care!

The last and only physical time for me, was twenty years ago in a bar fight - it was both empowering, and scary. Empowering because I realized I can take a hit and still continue - scary because I could continue like I did. Good to know, just in case. Crying is overrated. :D

That's the thing isn't it. The first time that I knocked a guy out, I was afraid that he was going to die. That put a damper on me for a long time, but in boxing it is encouraged and I tipped a few more, also in street fights. Thankfully sanity prevailed as I aged and nowadays I only lift my hands to shave and to pray lol. Btw. I think that they should re word that red pop up in PeakD that states sorry we can't retrieve whatever, try again in a few moments. They should rather say try again in an indefinite time, as I have been struggling with it for hours!

She's what 3? Occasional raging is probably going to happen at 3-4 even if she's super placid normally because hormonal surges. Have fun ;D On the bright side she's not a boy so you won't have the teenage rage in a 6-8yo body when that happens :D

Yeah, it isn't uncommon and under these conditions of being locked inside with us (not only inside) she is doing well. My wife and I were talking about having a second child (not seriously) the other day but my biggest fear would be - what if it is a boy? :D

"develop emotional fitness prior to needing it " Yes I agree inner work is very much required. Daily meditation and breathing exercises to balance our energies are a tremendous help in this way. The photos of your daughter are very sweet!
