The Model Experience
<div class="text-justify">

The kitchen is starting to resemble a kitchen again, to the point that we are even able to have food in the fridge and freezer and are planning on cooking something on the stove tonight. Nothing fancy - literally boiling some corn on the cob. Not even fresh corn on the cob (it is rarely available in Finland), but the vacuum sealed version. Still - it is something!

It is looking good though and while there is nothing yet in the drawers, it feels like it is going to be functional once we start organizing it properly. This takes time to learn new habits and hopefully, we can get it right at the start.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23z7SbifZtaAwjgFyjeAhnhsGskwjGZ4vHyu8GoEbbkbYzXEQEiHQqT8qQuXG7FQswk9T.png)

It reminds me of all the stuff we bought and organized in preparation for Smallsteps to be born, where we had her room set up with a changing table and all of the things we thought we would need carefully organized. But, a few hours after she was born, she was rushed to the ICU and stayed there for just under two weeks before being able to come home.

However, if there was a positive from this, it was that the nurses in the ICU had a huge amount of experience dealing with babies (obviously) and they had a similar changing area as us, except theirs was set up based on their massive amount of experience, whereas we had none. So, as we were also using their set-up, once I realized it was far more functional, I changed ours as best I could to match, which meant that from then on, every nappy change (and all the other things we had to do) was more efficient.

This is the power of *role modelling* experience, which is similar to learning from other people's mistakes, except it is on the other side of the coin, learning from other people's successes. Too often I think that this is a lesson that we overlook and depreciate, which is probably in part to us not liking to compare our own "failures" to the successes of others. Instead, we look at *their way* of becoming successful as *unsuitable* for us, as if they have some extra ability we do not possess.

It could be true of course, but without investigating it thoroughly, we do not know. Dismissing their approach early, means not being able to even try doing what they did, which is something that I have become familiar with on Hive over the many years, where the "secret to success" is no secret at all - it is just work. The type of work is going to be dependent on the person, but from the content creator viewpoint, it really is about consistency in engagement, content creation and emotional reaction, with *stability* being the key, not instability.

I believe that those who have built their presence here this way have tended to do pretty well and once they have the core habits in place, they continue to grow and develop their own paths, adding their own unique personality and processes into their habits - *owning their content and experience.*

Role modelling isn't about copying forever, it isn't about tracing and mapping what others do for eternity, it isn't about becoming robotic, quite the opposite. It is about learning the basic best practices and then adding artistic license over the top, much like learning scales and chords well, can then be used to build entirely new musical experiences. Or learning brush and color mixing techniques can lead to painting masterpieces.

Yet, it also isn't about having to take it that far either, because in the areas that we might not be that interested in, like the layout of a kitchen or a changing table, we are able to copy what has already been learned and get better results than we would have got just randomly doing it on our own, without the interest to *do it well.* If we are interested in getting better results, but not interested enough to go through the trial and error phases, copying what others do is probably our best bet.

It is like all of those DIY videos on YouTube that we watch to not really learn how to do something, but copy what someone else has already learned. We don't intend to be experts, we just intend to get a good result for a specific one-off task. Trying to be a professional at everything is a losing game and, being stubborn and trying to learn everything from scratch, heavily limits how much we can learn and, often will have to be on things that we don't really care about the process of anyway, just the result.

>But, I tend to be stubborn.

I enjoy the trial and error experience, because even though I might not get the best results, I value the feeling of *my results.* But, I am also careful to counter this with whether the results are worth it and, what kind of impacts bad results will have. If the cost of failure is too high, I will copy others, but if it is a low-grade cost to fail, I will give it a shot. This way, I get to learn stuff, get the sense of accomplishment and, the feeling that what I have created is more mine than if I had just copy and pasted it all from someone else. There is plenty of failure, but the level is acceptable.

I think learning is often a case of "picking battles" and if we are able to find a balance of copy and trial and error, we can improve our overall results and, spend more time developing in the areas that we are truly passionate about, and their associated supportive skillsets. This way, we become more efficient and effective and therefore, have more resources to improve in the next iteration, or next field of interest too.

But you don't have to believe me - *try it yourself.*

People have a sort of idea of what they want, and they can look and look at all different types of their want, like in a kitchen design, but until they try it out, they really do not know if they are going to like it. There are a lot of techniques and styles to a kitchen, but everyone uses a kitchen slightly different.

Your parents had their idea of a kitchen, when you were on your own you had your idea of a kitchen, and you and your wife had an idea of how you each used a kitchen when living together, and pre smallsteps. Now you have a kitchen that is the result of all three of you, not just your ideas and needs but those of your family.

I am sure you will all enjoy the kitchen for a few more years to come.

Yes - and most people aren't interested enough in their own outcomes to explore their preferences and habits, then wonder why they are unhappy with what they get.

I like the evolution of design through a lifetime like you describe - it shows how we evolve as people and how our changing lifestyles affect what we do and want.

Very true as there is no replacement for hard work as that is what brings success. I think the ones who give up too easily are the ones who realise how much effort is required as there is plenty involved.

Sometimes the success of others are over praised and the process on how they got there became a shadow, unnoticeable. Love what you said about that it is all about stability to all what we do. Stability that could bring a rippling good effect in our performance and profile.

Thus, I actually like doing trial and error as well for the sake of experience. Whatever the outcome will be, I'll take it for my self-improvement. Yeah, have some !PIZZA

This is true. The overnight success normally has years of process behind them.

Do the right thing often enough, eventually it will bring good results :)

In the past I did not take blogging seriously enough. Now I think that I no longer have problem making content with consistency. Now I just need to do better job interacting with people...I wonder how well I would do on hive if I was an extrovert. I would probably thrive if that was the case. But then I guess I would no longer be myself...

I don't think it is about extrovert or introvert, it is about motivation. This is a digital world, which means that you can be who you choose to be - *fake being an extrovert* if you think it will help - just keep your authentic voice.

Just so you know, I am not considered an extrovert.

I'm kind of at a stage where I'm learning how to do stuff for the sake of having a clue how to do it but I'd much rather somewhat-outsource the things I hate XD Like I know how to build a rig from scratch (I suck at it and making drivers but I know how it's done) so I just use Rigify (which ships with Blender).

Same deal with the geometry nodes system, I'm too dumb for it so I spent some time with video tutorials (I am so bad at video tutorials) and have a very vague idea how it works but like I did with the feathers (which sadly didn't end up working out too well as I can't figure out how to texture them and the textures aren't even working in the demo file) I just bought someone else's node tree and am playing with that (it's currently made a hilarious mess but I was expecting that).

I just wanna get things done yanno XD

The kitchen is looking very shiny, how was your corn on the cob? :D

Augmented Reality is getting very good to help visualization and planning.

When it comes to the physical work, I still prefer paying to get it done quickly. At least for the very first time, just to see it firsthand how pros do it.

Role modeling. I’m sitting shotgun and navigating with a friend, but you’re giving better directions. My biggest fight might be with anxiety? I think it’s brought upon by the endless decisions. But, the consistency I see in different pictures is to repeat the process. It’s like you saidβ€” writing right is about making what you wrote rote.

Another banger, Taraz.

Did you read about role modeling somewhere? Wouldn’t mind a recommendation.

Yeah, I think this is a big part of it. Constantly in FOMO, constantly frozen in spot too.

That Taraz makes some sense sometimes! :D
*If you say enough, eventually something smart should come out.*

I haven't read much about role modelling, but a long time ago I did look into NLP a bit and explored some of it through my own actions. Generally, I only talk about the stuff I have been able to experience myself in some way, even if not to an expert level.

We recently cooked corn, bought somewhere for 2 euros per kilogram. Very tasty, sweet. It seems to me that such delicious corn was not there before, in the past years and decades.

I grew up with fresh corn, but it is rare to get in Finland and is often second quality. It doesn't grow here at all.

Experince is experience. I always respect other people's experience and like to listen to them. I also copy them and mine, but never paste. We should add some value into them.

Adding value is the key to making it your own - do what other people do, get their results to a lesser degree - most people copy only the things that are the easiest to replicate, but the people who get the best results, tend to do the hard tasks as well. The payback is different.
