This morning I walked into a company work floor and asked if anyone had seen my student as I was meant to meet him there. This particular company I work at often and I have security to their work areas so I am a regular fixture.
https://i.imgur.com/bWkhCWG.jpg
**
Let them eat cake
** The cleaner, a woman I always say hi to, over heard me ask for my student and checked the name, "Mark? Mark Edelson? (name changed). I saw him at his desk earlier but I think he just stepped out to go meet you." I noticed there was a cake that people were taking slices from and she offered me some, which I politely declined as it was 9 am. I would have eaten it if I was at home. I walked away just as my student came around the corner and we went into a meeting room for our session. I asked what the cake was for and he said the cleaner brought it in because she had just become a Finnish citizen. I asked about her background and he said her country of origin. I said, no, her working background. He had no idea. This is common here. The reason I asked is that the way she speaks and the way she works has never struck me as that of an uneducated person. If anything, she comes across as someone who has been quite highly educated and takes her work seriously. But, when there is some foreigner doing a cleaning job, none seem to know their formal training. The general assumption is: uneducated. **
A better life
** I can't speak for all but as an exercise, I ran through a scenario why this is not likely to be the case at least under normal conditions as she is not a refugee. Refugees are more randomized due to the situation they are coming from. We also discussed where this may lead. In generalized terms, those that are able to move from their home country to one that is more stable are the more skilled, adventurous or educated as they are the ones willing and capable to get organised enough to get out of where they don't want to be. These people are willing to move into unknown territory with very little certainty of what they will find once there and still back themselves to be in a better situation than where they are coming from. This is generalized remember. Where does this lead? Well, often they enter into an environment that diminishes there talents as they have close to zero network and may not speak the language at all. Plus, they are culturally different which puts them at a disadvantage in many ways with hiring opportunities. So, many end up in the jobs that the locals do not want to do such as emptying bins. This may not be a great job in any country, but when the relative conditions of an entire country is compared, cleaning in one country can offer a better quality of life than being a professional in another. Which means those that have the possibility to provide for themselves and their families a safer or more opportunity rich environment, they would be crazy not to take it. **
Rock bottom to a glass ceiling
** However, once in a country, they start to conform to the culture and they are not idiots. They understand that there is more to life than emptying bins and aspire to extend but, there is a glass ceiling for many foreigners for a number of reasons that you can maybe guess at. But, this ceiling is much higher or nonexistent for their children who are born into the country and grow up local. So, they struggle through a cleaning job that may be well below their capabilities in order for their children to have a higher chance of prosperity in the future.
https://i.imgur.com/oG9WHBe.jpg
Their children grow up as locals with intelligent but low paid parents who are able to help them and push them academically. They watch the struggle of their parents and are more likely to want more than a cleaning job, so are more motivated to push themselves. This means they are likely quite intelligent, academically motivated and have the experience and perspectives of both a local and a foreigner. Plus, they are likely to speak at least two languages fluently. What do you rate their chances of success in a home that their parents came to with no network and a cleaning job? **
What did your parents do?
** To illustrate this, I will use an example of a friend of mine from high school in Australia. An Indian guy who's parents owned a little corner store in a side street just out of the city. As you can imagine, it wasn't a huge earner but paid their bills and kept them going. My friend is now a lawyer, has his own firm and about 25 lawyers working for him. If parents think they are comfortable and have a good life, they are likely to want similar for their children and provide them a comfortable life. If the parents are struggling but intelligent immigrants, they want more for their children but can't offer them comfort. All they can offer is the support to do better. Plus, like my friend, the parents in order to extend their opportunities are more likely to start their own businesses. This is because they will not be provided career paths in the same way as locals and they recognize this. Running a business, a store or restaurant type thing is very difficult and requires hard work and long hours. The children grow up at the premises and are helping as soon as they are able. The lessons and work ethic this demonstrates is incredible and when children see how hard their parents work to provide for them, they want to do better again to help out. **
Closing gaps
** The life of a foreigner in any country is rarely easy, I know, I am one. I am one of the people that was fortunate enough to not do a cleaning job but was required to start my own business to bring my earnings up to average. The difference is, for me to get my earning capacity to average, I cannot work average hours, I must do more and take care of all aspects of the business for myself. This is part of the reason I work so hard to try and get Steemit off the ground for myself as I am always in a kind of limbo. If for example, I lose some work because of organizational changes, the impact upon me is immediate and direct. It is an overnight recession that can very quickly become a depression. I do not want this kind of constant struggle for my wife and daughter but, here we are, at least for the time being. The work I put in now however is to buy space for my daughter to have access to opportunities in her future. As much as possible, she will be part of my work and be included in decision making as I struggle or succeed. My business is centered on two core rules I demand from myself: Integrity of delivery and value for my client. This means I do all I can to deliver all I can to every client even if it is not expected of me and even if it does not gain anything directly. Of course, I can't speak for all foreigners as there is a massive range of possibilities, attitudes and backgrounds, just like any population of people. I just found it interesting that this woman has worked with them for almost a decade and the people I asked today only knew the country she has came from and that she brought in cake for them. Perhaps though, it will be her child that saves their life in surgery or the scientist who makes a breakthrough that helps their children. Never underestimate the power of a struggle down a hard path, nor the children who witness it. Taraz [ a Steemit original ] https://i.imgur.com/pAcUAzX.png

Something to think about here... I grew up as a global nomad, because of my parents. Sure, "I'm Danish," but we didn't spend a lot of time IN Denmark. Thanks to my dad's job, we'd be six months in Italy, then back in Denmark, then in France, then Denmark... Jamaica, Kenya, Trinidad, Spain. By the time I was 20, I'd already lived in a dozen countries on three continents; gone to school in Denmark, the UK and Spain. Then, as an adult, I go to University in US and end up staying here... and yet, I still have my Danish passport. Why am I here? Mostly because I knew, from being quite little, that I didn't want to "work for a company." And in late 1970's Denmark, such a thing as "self employment" and making your own way was unheard of. You conformed, and most likely became some form of civil servant. I didn't want that, and the US offered that... even if not the culture, social structure, or anything else I really wanted. Did I accomplish what I set out to do? Sure... I had independence, but the "American Dream" is a little tarnished, compared to what it once was. In the process, I learned that a lack a certain kind of ruthlessness that's part of the landscape here. Often, excellence alone is not enough here... you also have to be willing to push others out of your way. My unwillingness to do so was probably a hindrance. On the other hand, we raised three fairly independent and free-thinking kids... who are doing better at life than most of their Millennial peers...

Yes, I am also not cutout for the ruthless life nor the self-promoting life. It is a hindrance for me economically on both counts. I enjoy the work I do but the chasing work for clients I lack the drive and must force it. When it comes to kids, what more can you want but fairly independent, free-thinkers? other than completely independent. :) I find that in Finland good enough is good enough from an effort level even though they actually aren't happy where they are. Most are very comfortable and don't *need* more but not many are actually happy. I think it is because most do not follow their dreams and hearts, they do what secures a salary. They play it safe to avoid a bumpy path.

I love this post. You gave me a lot to think about regarding my personal situation. I reflected on my own life and thought about what my parents did for me, and the conversations that I have with them about what their goals for me were while I was a child. I also am thinking about what I want for my son, and how much I want him to have a better life than I ever had. And all of the plans that my wife and I are making in order to provide him with the opportunity for a strong and successful future. Thanks for the post. I thoroughly enjoyed this and will try to keep this in mind over the next 10-15-20+ years as my son grows older!

It should of course be the goal of any parent right? The issue may be that considering how messy the political landscape may be, many of us have never really experienced strong, adverse conditions. I think this can make us complacent. The soccer kid fighting their way out of a ghetto is likely to have more motivation to succeed than a kid with a trust fund. It is not the amount of resources at the disposal, it is how they are applied. Starting from absolute zero is a very hard position to move up from though.

Yeah, starting from nothing can't be an easy feat. I do appreciate that so many immigrants (in the US) have fought tooth and nail for everything that they earn. I speak with many of them in my daily life. There are many blue collar workers who are first generation immigrants. They too hope for a better life for their children. All of us are fighting a battle. You never know what demons the person next to you is dealing with. None of us have the right to judge another. And there's definitely no reason for any of us to "look down" on others based on their social or economic status. In the end, we are all human and we are all just trying to get by in the best way that we can.

Living in a country where so many people left, and are still leaving, this is a beautiful entry, depicting some of the struggles they have to face, and indeed, they all struggle very hard to make a living abroad. Where are you from? (if you don't mind me asking) Good luck in your Steemit journey, seeing how much content you put up, and since it's original you deserve to be one of them greats!

Yes, the struggle can be very hard and depending on starting location, it can be even harder for some. My grandparents are Indian, my father Malaysian, I am Australian, my daughter is Finnish. Perhaps it is in the blood. I do post a lot both because of the struggle and I love writing. I have an idealistic belief that quality original content is what will set Steemit apart from the competition. At the moment, I perhaps only offer the original part :)

Yes, that's my belief as well. Original and good content is the way for Steemit to truly shine. I love to come here and read interesting posts like this one. I love to write as well, but although I say I will do it, I don't seem to find time for it. Well, maybe one of these days I will be inspired by you, and I will do it no matter what... Keep the good work!

Should be proud that you are owning and running your own business. Not everyone can and not everyone can sustain. It is true that usually the foreigners will work harder than the local as they have less advantage and near to zero network. Thus, with the right opportunity, they will rise fast and become part of the community. However, as long as we are contributing to the community, I guess the community will eventually accept the foreigners and become one. Those mega cities are common to have a lot of immigrants who seeks for opportunity (like me going to the city to find better prospect)

From a macro-perspective, immigration may not be best for human society in general. As you elucidate in your post, most immigrants to a foreign nation are intelligent, capable, adventurous, adaptable, and diligent; the type of character who would succeed in most circumstances and environment. By relocating to another region of the globe, the immigrants extract capital from their home region to be used/invested in another region. In many instances, the flow of immigration is from the poorer/less developed region to wealthier/highly developed region, in what is in effect massive transfer of capital from the poor to the wealthy. The developed regions, in which we live, benefit the most by extracting the most capable to work and prosper in our social matrix, thereby concentrating profitable human capital into only certain regions of the world.

I was going to bed but I will try. This is true but should one be forced to stay and develop a place they were born into at no choice of their own or forced to stay in a place where they do not want to be? Often, the developing countries of the world have already had most natural value within extracted and removed and is a large reason why the developed countries have what they have today. Gold, diamonds, oil, slaves. If I lived in a country where I found life miserable and my or any other child had the opportunity to prosper somewhere else, I would willingly push them away from shore. From a macro perspective trench warfare was deemed necessary also yet wasn't much of a life or death for the individuals involved. Those that made the decisions to fight never need step foot in a trench filled with the misery of the dead and dying. If the cure for a terrible disease lay in one of the minds in a developing nation but to get to it requires access to resources, staying at home may lead to an increase of suffering that may far out weigh the suffering of those left behind than if that person leaves. I tried, but sleep is too close :) Talk soon.

Thanks for the response. Immigration is a net benefit to receiving nation-states. Those in the wealthy nations who advocate restriction on immigration are usually the drone class (lower 80%) whose lot in life are not that different from those who remain in the emigration-prone countries. That is to say, those who are inevitably stuck in their class are the most vociferous opponents of immigration. One of the main reasons for this opposition is the distorted perception with which they view immigrants. Those who immigrate, for the most part, belong to the upper 20% of any social hierarchy. First, those who emigrate must have resources (capital assets, technical skills, etc.) to be acceptable to the host nation; second, they must have surplus resources to burn-off to organize a relocation; lastly, they understand how the socio-politico-economic game is played. Because the immigrants usually work in fields normally under the sphere of the drones, they are mistaken for belonging to the drone class, when in fact, the immigrants hail from the upper class. This class difference and distinction is the primary reason for immigrant "successes," which in essence, are immigrants regaining their social class, after a temporary set-back. Your forebears, likely hail from the upper class of their home region, and your family accomplishments are related to that background. The developing countries voluntarily sold-off their resources to the developed world; the complex system of colonial management would not have been possible without the full, enthusiastic cooperation of the ruling and upper class of the colonials. The myth of "national" struggle or conflict only help those in the upper strata of society by glossing over the inherent class conflict. >If I lived in a country where I found life miserable and my or any other child had the opportunity to prosper somewhere else, I would willingly push them away from shore. The miserable child will still be miserable in a host country; he may even fare worse in an entirely foreign environment without the necessary skills to navigate its socio-poilico-economic system.

Things like this are what I think about 24/7, I might have touched this thematic in my latest blog too but this is much more extensive. I look forward to seeing more of you.
