The Thing About Civilization
<div class="text-justify">

Hard at work or hardly working?

>I wish I could get away with hardly working.

It isn't possible now though, and what I recognize is, how much I rely on having a multiple screen setup. Working from a laptop screen only sucks! I am currently working on something that requires multiple tabs, programs and a lot of cut and pasting, and flicking from one to the other on 14 inches is not an efficient or effective process. I feel like I make 2 mistakes for every 5 actions. Still, it is better than working from the hotel though.

*I am at the local library.*

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23xpAn7XQkxJkKoa4EMbvaChwFyuC5ewy4D1mbq6HYj4eLBApBg7SqZpRoomnfwgDUoJC.png)

There are a lot of older people here who seemingly have nothing better to do than read newspapers and magazines. Which sounds like a pretty good life at the moment. I don't think there has ever been an extended period in my life where I have had *nothing better to do* with my time than sit around and read magazines. Perhaps I should or, perhaps there is always something better to do?

It is a suburban library, so it isn't very large, but it is quite new and pretty well equipped. I was here as it opened at 8am, just after dropping Smallsteps to school nearby, and was able to get a quiet booth. The problem is, that I will lose it once I go and get some lunch, so I am trying to hold off for as long as possible. I would *almost* take the risk and leave some of my belongings here, but I am not that game. Finland is generally a safe place, but things are changing and my trust in people is pretty low at the moment.

> I rushed running to the bathroom.

Trust in people is an interesting thing, as I am generally pretty trusting, even of strangers, but it tends to go through stages, depending on what is happening in my life. For instance, with all the house things that are going on, my trust is low as several people have not done what they were supposed to do, what they were getting paid to do, so that has an impact. However, I also think that it is not the smartest to trust strangers these days, as there is far less civic consciousness, as people tend to feel less responsibility and obligation to their community, which extends to behavior toward strangers. It is a downward spiral where one feeds the other.

>β€œThe thing about civilization is, it keeps you civil. Get rid of one, you can’t count on the other.”
β€” Amos Burton

That is a quote I liked from the show *Expanse.* Civility does seem to be a dying condition, which might be attributable to the shift to online interaction, where "humanity" is lost behind the screen, as people fight for points against strangers they don't care about, nor will ever meet. When doing good within a community, there is some level of indirect reciprocity, because it makes the community better. But online, there are just strangers, with very little direct relationships between people, especially on social media. This means that there is no cost to not do anything, nor is there a cost to do something.

>Unless famous.

Famous people will pay the cost of their familiarity, because there is a clear target, and a lot of people riding coattails in both the positive and the negative. People want to be associated with celebrity, whether that mean to be supportive and want to be like them, or *be against them.* It seems easier to be against, than to support, or be against those who are against who you support.

There might also be some correlation between declining output by individuals that add to the group, and increasing consumption of content. When we aren't making or creating anything for ourselves, all we can really act upon are the outputs of others. Whether we love or hate them, they become the placeholders for our voice, making us feel relevant through being supportive or critical of what we consume.

>Those that can't do, teach.

But, perhaps it is more like "those that can't do, criticize" these days, as everyone is a vocal expert of others, even though they are unable to come close to the level they are criticizing themselves. It is like the sporting fans screaming from the bleachers, thinking that they are better than the players on the field, viewing the entire game from above, from the safety of their own seats. It is easy to judge when there is no skin in the game, but if they were to set foot onto the court and play, they wouldn't have anywhere near the skills nor insight required.

>Teaching is a fantastic way to learn.

I have long held the opinion that if you really want to know something well, teach it. Even before fully grasping it, start teaching people about it, as it helps build perspective and raises questions that might not have been considered earlier. Teachers don't need to know everything about a subject, they just need to know enough to feed their particular audience, and as the audience grows, so too can the teacher. Teaching can help an interested person powerup the speed and depth of their learning.

Teaching doesn't have to be a profession or career to be a teacher, but teaching can give a different kind of experience with a subject matter, and requires looking at it from different angles. Everyone should probably do a little bit of teaching, if they want to improve in a particular area.

>That is what I have learned.

Learn from mistakes.

And I might be making one now, as I will go and get a bite to eat before I continue working, which means that I will probably lose this booth. As much as I like the privacy and quiet though, it doesn't have quite enough air in here for me and I feel I am slowly suffocating, so it might be for the best. *It is making me yawn.*

>Maybe that is the way it has been designed, so people can't stay in all day.

Oh, one of the things with teaching others though, is that there *has to be others to teach. So, if you have something you want to learn better, you might have to find people willing to listen. And, that might mean, *you'll occasionally have to listen to them* also.

The thing about civilization...

In the car I have everything I need both to keep informed and to get the day's work done. In the briefcase that I always keep at hand, I carry a laptop that is always connected to the internet, from where I can manage and even make a virtual visit to the house…

Technology has arrived to make us more independent in terms of work. Work should not be β€œslavery” and even less so when the vocation coincides with our profession.

It depends on the type of work as to what equipment is needed. In a pinch, I can work as I am on a laptop screen only, but it is far from ideal and slows down a lot of what i need to do for much of my work.

i like to learn, especially about new technology which can help humanity to become more healthy, wealthy and wise. And i like to share what i learn (teach to some extent).

Btw. i noticed your baby account voted on one of my posts, and took a peep to see if baby was healthy, wealthy & wise.

i noticed he could do with a little attention, by claiming a chunk of HP.
You could use a babysitting service like auto.vote, hive.vote or stake.hivelive.me to auto-claim rewards if you like, to help baby grow :-)

They make some pretty portable and inexpensive screens now that can plug into your laptop via USB-C and they draw their power from that connection so you don't need to plug them in to anything else. I have a Viewsonic one that is great and if I remember right the price was right around $120. You might want to look into something like that. Whatever you can get over there. I picked one up for my wife too because I definitely appreciate the benefit of multiple monitors.

Going back to a single screen now feels like stepping back to dialup in the 90s. My productivity plummets. Once you go multiple screens, you can't go back to one. Respect.

Your take from the local library spot really hits different. It's like we're all caught in this hustle of screen time and multitasking that we've kinda lost touch with the simple chill of flipping through magazines in a quiet corner of a library. Makes you wonder if we're hard at work or hardly working at living.

And Internet, man, it's a wild west of opinions where everyone's an armchair critic. It's easier to throw shade than to create or contribute something meaningful.

Teaching as a way to learn, that's some wisdom right there.

Keep reflecting, keep sharing, and let's keep that civility alive. It helps me a lot what you say, so keep it up!

Hi Mr. Taraz you learn on both sides and the reasonable question... Who is the student and who is the teacher? those who learn with active listening and attention can defend themselves from interruptions and distractions.

As far as possible, do not miss the opportunities to give the best of oneself, but also to learn, to reflect with equanimity, respect and good faith...part of the process in civilization, even though we still have a lot of the cave civilization.

We have to defend ourselves from everything for nothing and no one interrupts our focus on action, I'm just sharing my personal experience.

The library is an amazing place to. Reading and using libraries. Seems to be a culture of old people now. Young people have prefer scrolling and watching two minute clips.

What was annoying, was there were young people who took the booths, but they weren't actually needing them. They just wanted to be away from everyone. I had to go to a cafΓ© for a meeting.

I haven't been to our public library, but I doubt they offer booths like that. It sounds very convenient and comfortable for the elderly. I get what you mean with multiple screens. Once you're used to having them, going back to a single screen setup makes working feel slow and troublesome. I don't know if it will help with a small screen, but you can split your screen to show two windows by dragging one to the side.

It’s been long I visited the library
I think young people like me would rather check things online for a few minutes than go to the library

You poor soul. Working on one screen feels clunky x_x

I prefer three but two is minimum, helps a lot that my tablet is one of them

> seemingly have nothing better to do than read newspapers and magazines

Define "better". There's probably a bunch of "better" things they could be doing with their time but they seem to like reading XD

constant thing I've noticed is people dismissing other people having "too much time on their hands" if they're doing something other than what the dismissive person would deem "worthwhile" like their opinion is the only correct thing

> Teaching is a fantastic way to learn.

This is definitely more true than the first one XD It was one of the ways I got the kids to deepen understanding of material (go explain it to your siblings).

> you'll occasionally have to listen to them

Now you're asking the impossible XD

Did you end up losing the booth? Did you find some other nice place to work? Hope it was a nice change of scenery if you had to move :) How are the repairs going?

I don't like working with multiple monitors and I have never worked like that. I worked with only one and since the pandemic I work with laptop. It is much better despite small screen and charecters.

If I am just writing or going between a window or two, it is fine - but I have like 16 I am working with, and it is hard to keep track :)
