To tree or to fake tree
<div class="text-justify">

With our own house finally, the plan was to have a real Christmas tree for the first time, but it wasn't to be, which means the plastic fantastic will have to do. I don't mind of course as I don't think I am up for what I would consider should be, a "must do" tradition in Finland - stealing a tree from someone's forest. Most Finns don't do this of course, but I believe that it really should be part of the Christmas spirit of giving. There is supposedly a fine for being caught stealing Christmas trees of something like 50€ per meter, but I think it would be worth it. Just so you know, Finland is pretty much filled entirely with lake and Christmas trees, so even if a million or five were cut down just for this holiday, it wouldn't even make a dent.

Actually, it could also be seen as a government initiative and rather than theft, it would be sanctioned. They keep the forests under the powerlines clear but the trees grow back, so they have to keep cutting them down occasionally. Many of the trees would be the perfect size for Christmas trees and currently most of the trees come from overseas I think and at about 40€ each, it means that while a bit of tax stays in Finland, the majority goes outside the borders.

That is 40€ that could be spent at the Alko, the government monopoly on alcohol (except mid strength and lower beer) in Finland. The excuse is that it combats alcohol problems in society, but if anything, I believe it makes them worse as they have essentially made alcohol something special, rather than normalized it and taken away its social stature. On a side note, while everyone is "scared of getting Corona", the Alko (bottle shop - or "bottle-o" if Australian) was packed full of people. Social distancing is a thing, unless it gets in the way of getting drunk. I guess that alcohol kills germs though, so if you drink enough....

Anyway. Tonight we erected and decorated the tree with Smallsteps, who can't put on a normal face anymore if asked to look at the camera. I hope it is a phase, but at the very least, she can look back at four year old her and say what her parents say, "what's with that face?" She is still cute in my eyes.

---
![OI001021.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/05wcUvQX-OI001021.jpg)

---

My wife was looking for a basket to put the tree in so as to cover the stand, but couldn't find one that fit. IO found the perfect one at home and I think because it is the first year without him, it is even more fitting. Viski's toy basket complete with toys will be the base for the tree this year and of course, my wife cried when she saw I had done this, in a bitter sweet kind of way.

![OI001033.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/DPcuUSuV-OI001033.jpg)

We don't have many options for decorations for the tree and the last years we have just had a range of silver balls on it, but this year we decided to have a heart theme, using decorations we haven't used for several years. Smallsteps liked the idea a lot and she enjoyed the process of decorating the tree with my wife, while I took some photos, sans the silly face.

We tried, but she couldn't quite get the star on, which might be party due to me being too short to get her high enough, but next year I'll get her a ladder if she doesn't grow 50 centimeters more - which is about as likely as me growing another 50 centimeters in the same timeframe.

You might notice that the background is unfinished drywall. This is in our entrance and this area has been put on hold until we can gather a little more funding to cover the finishing of it, but it is fine for this year and gives the always in trend "industrial Christmas" look that people crave in their own homes.

---
![OI001026.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/Tf5lP1ZC-OI001026.jpg)

---

This is a shot from the entrance to the house and I added in the shelving for shoes on the right today. Where the tree is will eventually have a large, sliding-door cupboard there for more shoes and jackets, but that will be some time off as well. The green line behind the tree is the handrail for the stairs which is still to be painted white, but it is so long we have nowhere else to put it for now.

---
![OI001031.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/dd9JbzPC-OI001031.jpg)

---

And of course, to finish off the decorations, a dachshund to stand guard over the presents, which will be very sparse I think this year and will be placed under the tree on Christmas Eve eve, rather than Santa dropping by. Finns are apparently too impatient to wait until Christmas to celebrate, so they have the main day on the 24th, with the 25th and boxing day put aside to nurse the hangover, I assume.

---
![OI001025.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/GWSkA9AS-OI001025.jpg)

---

These were taken on an Olympus EM-1 MkIII, with an Oly 12-40mm 2.8 Pro lens and off-camera flash - quickly edited on my phone in Lightroom mobile to crop and bring up the temperature slightly.

---
![OI001032.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/5B1R6aq4-OI001032.jpg)

---

So there we have it, Christmas tree decorations in the KP home for 2020. Now, I don't care one iota about Christmas, traditions or religious connotations at all - I don't care about the presents either - but it is fun to do something different with Smallsteps once a year and she enjoys this kind of thing a lot, as does my wife - who does care about the presents. It is funny how some people make a fuss about not having a tree or whatever because they aren't Christian, but I find it silly. Perhaps that is why it is called the silly season.

Great job with the decorations by the way. Your daughter seems really into it with that very *serious* expression on her face in the pictures😁.

I only see Christmas trees like yours in supermarkets and public places like that. My parents use to have this Christmas tree they kept in storage and brought out every Christmas through out my childhood. It was like 3feet tall, and was decorated it with those tiny boxes.
Now everyone's older and nobody bothers about that, I wonder if it is even still alive.

The next generation, ala my very feisty nephews visit this Christmas and while I was with them at my parent's house, I heard the kids talking about how they want to do decorations. Sadly, I don't think there will be much of that because my parents are old and nobody is really bothered.

Ha, ha, ha. This a refreshing post. I liked Christmass when I was younger, but it was a thing of getting gifts. Now, what I like about it is the food. But the food would be as delicious without the Christmass setting. So, these things are just too fuzzy. Also, getting the decorations down is annoying.

I love to see Smallsteps is having fun with silly faces to the camera and putting on the decorations.

Regarding the trees and booze. I think they should let people get trees, but pay for them. Some people like to have the authentic pine scent in they houses. If you ever get one and it is a spruce, save me the wood. It's great for instruments. About the alcohol thing, I guess Finns are a lot like Venezuelans. The liquor stores are always full. They haven't stopped selling even if the Government said they couldn't. But the Government doesn't enforce on these things; Finland's seems to have just found a way around it in a more profitable way.

And they are also like us as we also celebrate the big dinner on the 24th and 25th is just "leftovers-reheat day". I only hope on that day I can eat a reheated pork sandwich and drink some wine for breakfast.

To conclude, the house is looking fine and the Industrial "thingy" gives it strength.

Good food is only as good as the company it is enjoyed with. The best steak is only okay when eaten alone.

Real trees are available for sale, but it kind of takes the fun out of it. Finland is absolutely covered in Spruce trees. Finns are big drinkers, as it seems it is the only way for them to have any emotional outlet :)

Ah, so Venezuelans are impatient too - good to know.

The house will get a bit warmer in time, but the entrance is pretty hard and cold at the moment. Later we will put a rug down or something.

Not really, for many years what was celebrated here was the Magi's thing. You know in January, like the Spanish do.

And the thing with dinner is that it is very late. Almost to get to the other day. So it is a thing of midnight eating shenanigans.

Smallsteps is an angel! She looks so cute, even though she puts faces in front of the camera. hahaha At home we had 4 years without decorating at Christmas, due to the death of my father. He was one of the promoters of Christmas, so when he was absent, we didn't feel like continuing with the custom. But this year is special because my 3 year old niece is with us and we have put back the tree, the birth and fill the house with lights. I think that Christmas is more beautiful if there are children. Have a happy family day, @tarakzp

Do you know that the last time that I had a tree was when my children were still in the house.
They are all married now with teenager children and they still do the Christmas tree thing.
My childhood memories about Christmas (a time for tears as no toys) is not too good and somehow I have always resented it.

So cute to see your women folk at work in a loving partnership on the tree there.
I hope that you guys will have a very good Christmas.

Yeah, I can understand resenting Christmas. Early on when young they were pretty good, but by the time I was 7 or eight, the family had changed a lot and the good feelings were no longer there for me most of the time, not just Christmas. There were presents, but mostly my family have made it about eating good food together - which is the part that I am more interested in but unfortunately, this is Finland so it is always the same fare by tradition, with me only really liking the ham :)

they have fun doing this together, so I think it is worth it. In 14 years when Smallsteps moves out, I am not sure we will continue on either.

Stays with one doesn't it?
After so many years and umpteen changes I thought that I would have shaken the memories off by now. But no, I still carry and protect that small boy inside.
I have been sharing memories of a particular good year for Papillon 4 years ago, as we gifted new presents to 1500 children in poor areas and every gift handed out was also a gift to that small boy inside of me.
But then again, our experiences made both you and I what we are today!

So you have already planned for Smallsteps departure in 14 years? Way to go my friend, as the best thing that I did for my own, was to make them independent.

I have an idea, you could plant a Christmas tree in a pot now, and have in a year a real tree for your festivities, then you go to the forest and plant it.
Or you could go to the forest and take a small one, put it in a pot, take it home,
and after the festivities are done you return it.

Nah, kills the point of stealing one.
Though growing a fir tree in Finland for Christmas takes several years, as they grow so slowly. If I remember correctly, it is 5 or so.

I see your hand and up you one,
perhaps to reduce harm the Finnish gov should set out patches with trees,
where people can steal them from all the citizens instead of just from a particular one, much more exciting, then send you a mock fine, and even have mock police actors there to give you the adrenaline rush of (almost) getting caught.
