Turn on the Lights
<div class="text-justify">

As of today, our electricity contract changes and instead of the fixed price we had, we are now moving to transport cost plus "market prices". The change is quite *extreme* to say the least and as we are living in a large house in a cold country, heating costs are going to be the killer.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23y8svzSsu6tGpxfvZJVo7y4o1JxvVQkgVQYjGGB57YmYyPkWLtM9hkVqa6fitvWMXySC.png)

There is an app we are now using to track the current prices and at around 2pm each day, it will update the prices for the following day. While you probably don't speak Finnish,

- The circle is the current price in cents per kWh (c/kWh),
- "Kallein" = most expensive for the day (it is most expensive right now),
- "Halvin" = cheapest for the day (After midnight on New Year change were incredibly cheap),
- "Keskihinta" = Average for the day

The first image is today (Sunday) the second is for tomorrow.

</div>

---

As you can see, the prices today were great! Actually slightly cheaper than our contract was and as such, we did all of the washing we could during the morning. However, tomorrow the market prices change *drastically.*

Highest price moves up from 5.97 to 19.22 c/kWh, which is a 320% increase in price. But it is the average that is really the kicker, since the change in that from 1,87 to 13,18 is a 704% increase in cost and this means that all of the appliances like fridge and freezer that have to stay on, will be increasing our electricity bills by 7x for the *fixed* electricity costs.

>Who knows what it will be on Tuesday.

For example, our freezer uses around about 1kWh per day and that means that right now, for the most expensive hour for this day, it is costing 2 cents per hour, but tomorrow it is going to cost 13 cents per hour.

<div class="pull-left">

</div>

---

So today it was 48 cents, tomorrow it is going to be €3,12. The difference in the cost over the space of the month takes the freezer from around 15€ a month to 93€ a month all things remaining equal, which they won't - they will be higher. As I was talking with my wife, while we can affect what we use during the peaks and the troughs, when it comes to these fixed costs, the averages are the real thing to keep an eye on, and there is nothing we can really do about it - we are held over a barrel.

All of our lights are LED so they do not burn too much electricity in the grand scheme of things, but they do add up over time and one of the things that we are quite used to is not only turning them off, but also having them dimmed, which means they don't use nearly as much as when they are on full and, they last longer. But still, a lot of houses are going to have darkened windows this winter, including ours. A 700% increase from our current electricity costs is going to make an enormous impact on our financial situation in the short term and while there will be some possible rebates available to lessen tax liability, that won't have an effect on us now, it will impact next year.

After speaking with friends over the last few weeks, what has been interesting to note is that it has somewhat become a gamified experience, where these apps and the game of finding ways to save electricity has become the norm. This reminds me of when a friend bought a Toyota Prius and enjoyed seeing how low he could get the consumption under different conditions by driving alternative routes and speeds. It has become "fun" and people like my wife are *enjoying* the process and drama of it, even though no one wants to be negatively impacted financially.

This is something I was also talking about with my wife a few minutes ago. People are incentivized to act to mitigate the risks when there is a cost and in something like the rising price of electricity, people have jumped to and dived into the fray and changed behaviors very quickly. But, the same people have not acted on the incentive *for gain.* If they had changed their behaviors to be incentivized *to making money* instead of saving money, they would have far less stress when things like rising electricity prices impacted on them.

I am in between this space at the moment, as while I have definitely been working toward having multiple revenue streams to insulate against these kinds of events, the last few years have also been impacted financially through both the renovation of an old house and perhaps more profoundly, my own health issues which greatly reduced my monthly income for a very long period and it still hasn't fully recovered.

What I wonder for going into the future though, is whether this kind of change in people's lives where they have gamified their financial outcomes through the usage of apps to save money, will impact on their willingness to do the same in order *to make money* too. We on Hive and in crypto in general are no strangers to this and investors might be getting more used to doing it on the retail apps now, but Web3 is going to introduce far more options to make money though gaming, content creation and on Hive, curating content too. If people enjoy saving money, wouldn't they *enjoy* making money more?

Eventually - *The lights will go on.*

Yikes that is rather volatile pricing and whatever happens you will pay more. I was wondering if you charged an inverter on the cheap days and ran the appliances with those on the expensive days? No idea what or how many you would require, but may or my not be an option.

Yeah, I am not sure what it would go like with an inverter, but I am not sure what the cost is going to be right now, as I am sure I wouldn't be the only one buying, and supply chain issues will still be cited for high prices.

How will this impact most people in Finland?

What I mean is, I know in the States I have read that the majority (something like 60-70%) live paycheck to paycheck. I can easily imagine a large increase in the electric bill could quickly make it very hard for people. Are people, on average, in a better position there to absorb the increased cost, at least to some degree?

Anyway, good luck dealing with it. Our energy bill has gone up a bit in Japan, but it hasn't been too bad yet. Yet, yet. Who knows what will come next.

The gamification is interesting. I remember a few years ago there was an app for my iPhone that "graded" my driving. If I came to stops too quickly, if I accelerated too quickly, if I went above the speed limit, and so on. I thought it was silly at first, but before long I found myself trying to drive better just to get a better grade in that app!

>How will this impact most people in Finland?

I suspect for many, it is going to have quite a severe impact on their monthly finances. Most aren't prepared for such an extreme change, especially in the winter months. and of course for the lower income earners, it is going to have a more profound impact, because they can't necessarily just buy less unnecessary, as there is far less fat in their budget already. Tax breaks don't really help them much. In general though, Finland is likely better off than the US, but it has been shifting quickly over the last two decades to resemble more of the US demographic.

I have never heard of that kind of app, but it sounds like something a lot of people would get into. I assume at some point, it will be integrated into cars and given to the police...

I certainly like making more money, but not at the tradeoff of extended work hours or taking on tasks that do not interest me. I am definitely in the camp of trying to find ways to save by going without before sacrificing more of my time and effort to earn more in the short run. But after your thoughtful article, maybe it is time to make some short term sacrifices for more long term gains.

Happy new year 2023 Mr. Taraz , I do not understand the handling of currency in relation to cost benefit for use of electric service in Finland , but it must be very good , plus in that country you as citizens demand as a right to have it in optimal conditions and the duty to comply with the payment of fees to claim that service.

Here in my country is another story we pay the electricity and almost always fails the service especially at night, for example my city is very hot and without AA is very complex, live sometimes we spend up to 24 hours without electric service and when we request that they come to repair it for any breakdown in a transformer, disconnector or subway problem come to so many hours workers and then comes the worst charge for the left in $ to solve it is very big corruption. And if you don't pay they leave the place and we have no one to complain to.

Happy New Year to you too.

Here, the electricity is pretty stable, but we just got a letter in the mail on how to prepare for blackouts. When it is -25 in the winter, blackouts are going to cause some major issues if they are too long, as people's homes will become unlivable quite fast.

RE: Turn on the Lights
Nobody can really reject money but the energy costs will hurt during winter. I kind of wish that countries would take up nuclear as a source instead because it's way safer now compared to the past. Relying on gas and oil isn't really cutting it because of all the technological increase in demand for energy.

If we were well-prepped preppers, what would we be doing right now?

In our real world, my father would still be laughing were he to know that I have been using a rope and a bucket where the electrical water pump at the well. I need to know how much I would be able to irrigate in case I don't want to be grid dependent.

I thought you were in bad shape in Italy with regards to bills, but I see that the whole world is one country. I like your reasoning silul making money, certainly the first gain Practically it is given by savings ... but then you have to put the money saved to good use in my opinion.

I had planned to install a 15kw photovoltaic system with three accumulators, also of 15kw each.
This will lead me to no longer have expenses in the bill but also to have a profit.

To make the installation I took advantage of a bonus of the
Italian state, I basically got everything for free... many didn't take advantage of the opportunity, big mistake!

Of course it's less cold here but between spring and summer the plant will go from saving us money to making us earn ... in my opinion a bargain!πŸ’ͺ

This is a really good idea, especially in places where there is plenty of sun. They are good in Finland, but only during the long summer when not too much electricity is needed. In the winter, almost useless since the rooves are covered with snow and even if they weren't, there is only light for a few hours a day.

>I basically got everything for free... many didn't take advantage of the opportunity, big mistake!

Yeah. Some countries have done a great job with this. Finland a terrible one.

Ouch. In Finland, can power companies make pricing changes unilaterally? Not sure about other states in the U.S. but in Minnesota they have to petition the <a href="https://mn.gov/puc/">Public Utilities Commission</a> for permission to change rates. Permission is often granted, but not always.

It seems they can do largely as they please, but they are going to meet a "windfall tax", where the government is going to tax them more over a certain amount of profit and then use it for rebates. They are also talking about introducing caps on the max prices, but unlike the other Nordic countries that foresaw this and introduced measures months ago, Finland is late as usual and nothing will happen until May or so supposedly, which means... *spring and summer* temperatures when electricity usage goes down a lot.

Right now our electricity price is still around 7 cents to 15 cents CAD.

Natural gas price is up every winter. Year over year same period it’s almost doubled.

The price increase I think is due to green energy policy and carbon tax, we have abundant natural gas to export and keep the market price manageable but we are not expanding.

I thought natural gas is green, or is it not?

>I thought natural gas is green, or is it not?

I think "greener" but not green - it is still a fossil fuel, isn't it?

The energy prices here have very little reason to be so high, but they are essentially gouging because they can - what choice do households have? Well, living "off grid" is possible for some, but in reality, very few can actually do it.

@markkujantunen ·
The monumental fuckup that is the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor construction is the primary reason why the electricity market is fucked in Finland. Because its completion has been looming since 2013, no investments have been made in baseload power or to keep some old coal-powered plants in running order. The gap was bridged with imports from Russia. Those imports stopped last May.

Considerable nameplate capacity of wind power has been built, which is of course very good because it really helps with the average price but the problem is the price of electricity, which is quite high. Once OL3 starts working at full capacity, there will be enough baseload capacity to keep the prices in check permanently. There are ways to make use of extremely cheap wind-generated electricity. Because of the high demand, Norwegian hydroelectric power plants are incentivized to sell more of their power to the rest of the Nordic countries. Heat storage technology is one thing. Another is the electrification of the car fleet.

It's a pity that Olkiluoto 3 wasn't made by Rosatom years before whole Ukraine crisis and the sanctions. Rosatom has a much better track record than the French and the plants they sell are cheaper. Nuclear fuel can be sourced from a lot of places so there is no dependency when it comes to already constructed plants.

It is clean burn.

In fact carbon is life, carbon is plant food.

Even the natural decomposition process of organic matters creates CO2.

Reduce life is the only way to reduce CO2 emission even that makes no sense since plants will just β€œeat” it all up. Circle of life.

Have you seen indoor greenhouse purposely create CO2 so plants can grow bigger and faster?

I pay about 15 euros per month (200-250 kW) for electricity in the apartment. If I had an electricity bill of 500-600 euros, then I would have to have additional HP of 50 thousand dollars. It's a lot.

We have had constant increase in electric and gas prices almost one time in two months until 2023. Few days ago they declared there would be increase for the coming three months. You can guess why...

Yeah, it is a different problem again there, but obviously still has a similar outcome for households.

That is brutal. Right in the middle of winter and when the economies are bad everywhere.

Will fixed price come back anytime soon? How do people budget when they don’t know how much the bill will be?

@tarazkp ·
Fixed price contracts are extreme too, it was just that ours was made two years ago. Some people have been paying up to 1€ a kWh at times.

People can't budget, it is just constant checking and hoping. We don't even know what our monthly bill will be, as the estimates can be 100s of percent out.
