<div class="text-justify"> When I train, I stand, even when training remotely - which means that for the last two days, I have spent the entire work day on my feet, but hardly moving from the spot, though I do tend to wander when talking. I have barely walked anywhere today, but have managed 6000 steps in front of the screens. The reason I stand while delivering is that it changes the way I present, the tone of voice, my level of engagement, the speed I speak, the intonation and pauses I take and I hope, how engaging the presentation ends up being. I have been training for many years now and have found, sitting has a negative effect on the atmosphere, depending on topic. Body position in general is something that we don't generally spend much time thinking about, but it does affect the perspectives of our world in how we see and, how we are seen. We make judgments on state of mind and personality when we see someone hunched over or standing tall, on confidence on the ways in which they move and we can hear the difference over the phone if someone is smiling or not. While we don't spend much time thinking of them, the influence these minor things have can completely change our experience of circumstances and whether we believe or not, *buy* or not. At least for me, my thoughts change depending on my body language and when I have my "chin up" I am far less likely to be thinking or dwelling on negative thoughts. I am not sure why, but I suspect that it has something to do with the way we access memories, for example - what was the color of the walls in your first bedroom? What about your first bike? Did you look in a particular direction in order to recall the information? Up? Now, when was the last time you cried? Did you look in the same direction? It seems that it is common to look downward when thinking or feeling negatively, which we can see represented in a thousand pictures and movies to the point we can sense the feelings of another through their posture. What I was wondering was, what about when we are on our phones - which way are we looking and does it affect the way we think, feel and of course, interact. Would the way we talk to each other change if instead of looking down at the phone screen or keyboard, our chin was raised and we looked straight ahead. Would we look for and engage with different kinds of content, would we interact in a different way with those we meet online? I am not sure how much of an impact it would have, but I suspect that there is at least *some* influence from our posture and position. A possible suspected example from my own observations might be that, due to the size of the screen and keyboard, comments made from a phone tend to not only be shorter, but also contain poorer grammar, less punctuation, shorter sentences that omit pleasantries and "get to the point" with a minimum of words. The problem might be - *is it as effective?* Efficiency of words doesn't seem to translate into efficiency of communication, as the atmosphere of the conversation is a massive influence on how participants interact, how forthcoming and open to ideas they are and due to the part emotional attachment plays in our memories, how much of the information gets onboarded, remembered, considered or enacted at a practical level. While some people think that the learning happens at the information level, most of what adds value to the retention has very little to do with what is actually said, with how it is said having far more weight. Efficient doesn't mean effective - conservation of energy doesn't mean that the energy spent isn't wasted. What I find is a lot of the communication that people *intend* to have an effect on whatever audience they has is lost, because they do not spend the time building the environment for effective communication. My legs could have had a much easier day if I had sat down, but would I have transmitted the messaging as well as I could, or in a way that was most beneficial for my audience, clients paying to learn from me? In my experience, *no.* What I guess it comes down to and perhaps why people tend not to spend much time on this when interacting online, is whether we are communicating to convey a message we want others to consider, or are we speaking in order to release our thoughts. I think a great deal of the communication online is aimed at the latter, we want to "be heard" even though what we are saying isn't delivered in a way that is likely to be considered. We *blurt out* whatever comes to mind, yet do not care whether it is in a form that is consumable for consideration - and then we think that those people scrolling through and randomly liking things matter. The world of social media skews the style of communication and most of the time, rather than effective brevity, it is short irrelevancy that makes so little lasting impact that literally seconds later, the message is already forgotten. We might have a lot of information pass through our awareness, but it has become an *in one ear, out the other* flow that doesn't touch the sides - we have become "information loose". Now, I don't know what your intuition tells you, but through intentional observation, I think many will discover that not only is the way they present not geared well toward engagement, how they consume is not a great way to extract value from what is consumed. Sure, it might be all you think you need to do or get, but do you ever consider what *you are missing* as you speed through the stream with a quantity over quality approach? We expect all of the value of the world do be delivered in 144 characters, everything we need to know on a subject through a pithy tweet or a headline - and then wonder why others are doing far better than us, while we *feel* so smart. I believe you might be on to something. You think there is a reason why TED talks are given standing? Why speeches are delivered standing? I'm sitting (in a decently comfy chair) with my chin up. I have my monitor above my eye level (just slightly) so I can get my bifocals into play as needed. It's decent if not good posture for communicating with people I'll never see. When I talk on the phone I am head up. I generally put it on speaker so I can assume good posture. When it's an important call I stand. Even when I text it is more head up than down. I never learned that quick thumbs thing, and I spell my words out. Not that I have thought that stuff out, but I do consider cause and effect for most everything. I've put a considerable amount of thought into how I sit on a motorcycle. For going long I want to be just slightly forward of straight up with a little pressure on my arms and my abdomen helping with body strain. I want my feet directly under my hips (not that ridiculous feet forward position favored by the 'bikers'). Optimizes control and reduces travel stress. So, yeah. Posture counts. Maybe you can parlay your leg discomfort into a massage or rub? You never know unless you ask...

Most don't, but some are "naturally" (often more sensitive/ observational/ experienced) than others. A lot of bikers seem to put a lot of stress on themselves in riding positions unnecessarily - is it to look cool? >Maybe you can parlay your leg discomfort into a massage or rub? It is a useless pursuit - I married a tiny bird with arms like spaghetti :D

In yoga, a lot of attention is paid to where the eyes are looking. I think you knew that. If not, then you have accurately described the 3 main positions of the eyes and the effects that are observed after them.

Didn't know about the yoga thing - but started paying attention to where I was looking while I walked when I was a kid and what I was thinking. Later, I read something about NLP and the idea came up again.

Everything communicates: our posture, our gestures, even our silence, communicates. When we talk about communication, not only two elements intervene: the sender and the receiver, but other elements such as the context, the channel, the language, the barriers and even the intention we have to communicate or not. It is easy to perceive when a person can be sad, tired or happy and excited just by seeing him walk, talk, interact with the other. That is to say, if the communication in personal, person apersona. But sometimes, communication through digital media, can not be as effective, however, have sought ways to make the messages are increasingly clear (use of capital letters, quotes, gifs and emoticons). I have witnessed several discussions because they have not known how to code the message because they do not handle language or codes well. In defense of man, always, since the world is world, man has sought the way to communicate. Perhaps at some moment he will achieve perfection. Greetings and thank you, @tarazkp

For sure, there are many factors to communication that make an impression on us, even if we are not explicitly aware of them at the time. Most of us spend close to zero effort on improving our communication, which leaves us with the skillset we carry, often learned in childhood and largely blind to us. I think that the digital communication has changed, but I don't find it nearly as effectual as face to face and am unsure if it will ever be. There is a trade-off of course though, as digital can have reach - I still suspect that most content created has very little reach at all, we just see the stuff that does.

> We expect all of the value of the world do be delivered in 144 characters, π€£They gave you extra 144 words. I did not know you before but I think that could be for individuals like you (and me) > comments made from a phone tend to not only be shorter, but also contain poorer grammar, less punctuation, shorter sentences that omit pleasantries and "get to the point" with a minimum of words. I think you are right. I tend to write shorter sentences while using the phone and tend to write more slang than formal words. I don't know why though. I also tend to stand while at the office in front of my desk. I have a standing desk setup to work from home. I feel If I need to think deep and be creative, I need to stand which gives me freedom and fluidity. I need my body movement and fluidity to think and write. Sitting down, I browse and read but I cannot write (deep stuff). I cannot present without standing up. A secretary once asked me to sit down and present. I was so uncomfortable doing that- I had to stop the presentation, requested him let me stand and then completed the presentation. English is not my first language and I think I can play with words much better while standing. The other thing that helps me to present is my hand gesture. As a non native English speaker, I think it helps me communicate better although people say it is not considered appropriate. π€

I take all the words I need :D >I think you are right. I tend to write shorter sentences while using the phone and tend to write more slang than formal words. I don't know why though. I think there is a cluster of reasons, but one might also be that we have the habit of messaging more with phones - so even if we want to write length, our habits aren't made for it. >I feel If I need to think deep and be creative, I need to stand which gives me freedom and fluidity. This is an interesting point too, and I agree. I was meant to put a line in there mentioning the *dynamic* component of standing, which is related. >The other thing that helps me to present is my hand gesture. As a non native English speaker, I think it helps me communicate better although people say it is not considered appropriate. I think as long as the words/tone/actions align, it is pretty effective - some people try to force it and tyhe timing is off and therefore, it feels awkward.

You sure are not frugal with your words π I like to think that I am a natural communicator. Hand gestures come naturally to me. I think they help you to gather your thoughts and engage your audience at the same time. I used to do big workshops. As a presenter you know when your audience is not paying attention. Hand gestures and funny conjectures are deadly combo to wake them up and regain their attention. At least that was one of the techniques I used when the group was big.
