Unlucky in Heat
<div class="text-justify">

In a little bit of coincidence, both @preparedwombat and my wife sent me messages within two minutes of each other about getting a gas heater, but unfortunately, the shops were closed that sold them. However, today I did go and get one, as well as a new composite gas bottle, and another connection. The connector didn't work, so I ended up using the new hose, with an old connector from the barbecue and after a bit of fiddling, we have a heater.

>But the house is getting colder.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23xevYbRgomr4bg5zcnHrB7SdctvGSVt5b23CZdqYv94Dm3V6Fh3A4PjvnCcSTfy2vfP5.png)

I had a conversation with a professional psychologist today about whether she believes in luck, and she said that she shouldn't, but does a little bit. I added, that I am starting to wonder if I am just unlucky, because even when prepared, things that should work, don't. For instance, with the heating, I get that there are more and less qualified people, and everyone has bad days, but we have dealt with about six people in the last few days, and only one has done their job.

For instance, right now there are guys here (who are really nice) changing the heating unit over, but they got here at 330pm, when they were meant to be here at 9am. They came in last night from another city 250 kilometers (150mi) away, and then called this morning to say they were on their way. After wondering where they got to, they called back an hour later, and the unit they were picking up, wasn't at the supplier at all. Instead, they had to drive to another city to get one, which is 180 km away on backroads, making it at least a five hour trip.

>Our luck.

So, now they are here changing the unit, which will take a while and means that there is no heating in the house at all, which is why the temperature is still dropping. It is now 10Β°C (50Β°F) inside, and will likely drop a few more degrees before they get the unit in, *if* they get the unit in tonight. Then, it will take time to reheat the water, before it can circulate it through the radiators.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23vYmQZ66HyPaPECPqVu95pkYmkgwewQMZ9oYRTCyPZ3TbbKogaR9FbfARddYdFMC7rxw.png)

>Are some people born lucky, while others are born unlucky?

In general, I have a belief that we "make our own luck" in the sense that if we perform the right preparatory actions, when opportunities arise, we can take advantage of them, which makes it look like luck. However, doing the right things, doesn't mean getting the desired outcomes, which means that it is possible that there are some people who get more of the share of positive outcomes given the same preparation, than others who get less, despite them doing the "right" things.

>Some people seem to always fall on their feet.
Some people seem to always fall down the stairs.

*I shouldn't have bought a house with multiple floors, because I apparently have poor footing.*

>A charmed life. A cursed life.

Which do you think you lead?

As I was talking with this psychologist, I did mention that I don't think that I am totally unlucky, as I do recognize a lot of lucky situations in my life also. I acknowledge that in some respects, especially depending on individual experiences of people who might be reading this, I am privileged. But, comparing across very different circumstances doesn't work, as there is too much variation. It is like those "happiest country" rankings - which are useless. Things have to be compared at the local level, where there is at least a *similar* denominator.

So, perhaps a better question is,

>In comparison to friends, family and your local population, are you lucky?

For me, this is also a little hard to gauge in Finland, because I am from a bit of a different background, and have a very different upbringing and support structure than most of the people who surround me. However, in general and after talking with a few closer friends about this, they often enough say "how do these things keep happening to you?", which is a pretty good indicator that they are outlier events, but seem to be clustering around me.

>Maybe it is my wife who is the unlucky one.

*After all, she is married to me.* Poor girl.

As you can probably intuit, this post is all a bit tongue in cheek, though belief in luck is probably one of the things that sets us apart from animals. assume that they don't have the same sense of it, even though they would face a lot of situations that we might attribute to luck, like a *lucky escape* from a predator. Probably, once it catches its breath, it doesn't think too much about it again, let alone attribute the "next lucky escape" as part of a series. Granted, one unlucky moment in the animal kingdom, and that is likely the end of life.

Which is probably why we as humans get to contemplate whether there is luck or not, because in general, we are all pretty lucky that we weren't born a fish, or a rabbit, or any other animal that tends not to live to maximum age. Most of us get about 80 years on this earth to think about a whole lot of useless things that have nothing to do with our survival.

>Like whether the smell of gas is normal, or there is a leak.

*That might be related to survival.*

That really sucks about the heater. It's good that it is getting fixed. We had a similar issue with our car lately, not quite as vital as the heater, but still a chain of unfortunate events all the same. It definitely gets you questioning things. I'd posit though that perhaps you used up a bit of your luck with the whole stroke thing. Many people are so "lucky" after something like that. You might just need to wait a bit for your luck tank to get full again :).

I think it's just easier to be aware of the bad things because of the feelings you associate with them. We remember the things that made us feel like crap because we want to avoid them in the future.

Good to laugh after the annoyance passes over, no luck or being lucky, bad if manufactured on a Monday or Friday!

Yikes those guys traveled far and wide to simply fix an error you managed to see quite quickly, wish they standardized things to fit, another annoyance to contemplate!

I don't believe in luck. I don't like to think about any pleasant coincidence that happens to me as luck. I also don't think that this β€œgoodness" of life that could happen to anyone is as a result of preparation. I believe in destiny and I believe everything that happens to any individual is based on their destiny and the choices they make along their journey to destiny, it is particular and not general.

I would like to think that people have similar luck, and it all evens out one way or another. We usually just tend to focus on the bad things, that's why we feel like we are so unlucky compared to others. But that doesn't stop me from thinking I have really bad luck. I think I have one of the worst lucks in games. I can't count how many times I missed in Splinterlands on a 1 speed difference, and yet my opponent hits me consistently even with an 80 percent miss chance.

I think you are really getting a lot of bad luck with your heater problem, and I hope it gets better soon.

You are suffering what many of us are suffering or have in the past.
There is more and more lack of good professionals in "regular" services anywhere in the world. We had a similar problem with the furnace (water and heating system) while the solar panel professional was connecting the power. He made a mistake which ended up burning the furnace unit. We had to take care of ourselves by hiring a heating service professional to go over the problem and fix it, and we had to pay for the money while requesting the solar panel company to pay us back what they messed up (they were just willing to check we were not lying while we could not shower or keep the house warm).

The last trip we made to Portugal, living next to our rented apartment was a Spanish retired couple, they invited us for a coffee and we had a nice chat with them for 2 hours. One of the downsides they mentioned was getting good professionals. They just don't show up.

The world is going digital so fast, that the younger generations do not want to work on "analog" traditional services and there are very few ones replacing the old ones who are retiring. So the ones left are in high demand and many are not very good ones as they just hire anyone wishing to join as there is a big need for them.

Older generations used to learn how to deal with "regular" home issues. Everyone knew how to use a drill, set up an electric wire, or fix a leaking pipe. Ask around your friends how many of them know how to fix a pipe and you will probably find out only 10% do know and are willing to fix it by themselves instead of calling a professional. Ask any of your friends the same question about their children over 20 years old none of them know how to do it.

My friends, all over 50 years old, tell me I am crazy willing to rebuild by myself the house we have purchased in Portugal! They just cannot understand I am willing to learn, face the issues, and deal with them to get the satisfaction of knowing how to do all the processes.

You are just suffering a real issue which is the same in many developed countries, good service professionals are in high demand as there are very few. Sometimes education systems forget we are still quite analogic even while consuming everything digital. They should incentivize part of the young generations to try to learn a profession instead of going to college to get a degree they will never find a job to live out of.

> One of the downsides they mentioned was getting good professionals. They just don't show up.

I have heard that this is common in Portugal, but it is becoming common here too now, where it really wasn't even a decade ago. The decline has been quite remarkable around the world and the lack of pride people take in their work is shockingly bad.

>and you will probably find out only 10% do know and are willing to fix it by themselves instead of calling a professional. Ask any of your friends the same question about their children over 20 years old none of them know how to do it.

We actually had a conversation last night about this, where the decline in Finns who can do things around the house has been rapid. When I first came here, some people were still building the majority of their own houses. Now, it is almost zero. Global culture is contagious...

There is luck. I rarely have bad days; on days like these I stop everything I'm doing.
It even seems to me that luck has its own laws.

I don't believe in luck.

But I met somebody, who should know better, who did believe in luck.

For several weeks, I went 15 years ago, to a small casino, where I played roulette.

There, I met a croupier who told me that she believed in luck!
