<div class="text-justify"> While waiting for the girls in the city, I sat down for a cup of tea in a cafΓ© and couldn't help but overhear the conversation of the couple next to me. I normally don't eavesdrop, but they were talking about which restaurant they could try in the city - and they both had Australian accents. So after recommending a restaurant that was close by, we spent the next 45 minutes talking about life and the differences between Finland and Australia in prices and things like housing. The guy had bought a house twenty years ago in a crappy area close to Sydney, and now it is an affluent area and worth around four million dollars. A sight more than he paid for it back in the day. And Sydney has always been expensive. > But the world is different now. --- --- > The worse we feel, the more we spend. This was the premise for my [last article](https://peakd.com/hive-126152/@tarazkp/what-market-are-you) looking at market behaviours. But there are other implications than just further enriching the zero point one percent, because what we buy and what we consume, distracts us from actually dealing with many of the issues that we need to deal with. People end up feeling they "know" what is going on in the world, but really all they know is where they have put their attention to consume more rhetoric designed to lull them off to sleep, and dream about their intellectual prowess. > But their intellect is repeating what the algorithm fed them. *Like reading the answer from a calculator screen,* without knowing what went into making it and therefore, not knowing what it means, or whether it is right or not. People *feel* that they know what is happening in the world, because they read about the world from sources that they believe are reputable -without questioning whether they can be trusted or not. And when a source makes its money from providing information of a certain type to make the buyer *feel* like they are knowledgeable, there is a lot of room for bending the truth. For example, friends of ours were also visiting the city today and we sat down for an hour together talking about stuff. My friend is head of finance at a pharmaceutical and stays up to date with the current finance information. He cited the top finance magazine and how they have been predicting that in six months from now the housing market will recover. Yet, they have been predicting this for six months for the last four years. Eventually they will be right, but the problem is that they do not cite any reasons why the housing market will recover and, they are ignoring all the indicators as to what drives that recovery - like unemployment rates. > The unemployment rate in Finland is at 10.5 percent. *And increasing.* Companies are laying off more people and those who are losing their jobs are knowledge workers who have been earning well up until this point. But when people lose their jobs, they don't say - > "Time to buy a better house!" But my friend, *still reads the magazine.* Because a lot of the information he reads from it, *he agrees with.* He feels smarter for reading it and gets a sense of superiority when he agrees with what is being said, and a sense of superiority when he disagrees. > He wins either way. You see, we like to feel knowledgeable, but we don't let a little thing like having bad knowledge get in the way of our feelings. We also don't like to put in too much effort, so we don't dig deeper to discover if what we are agreeing with is actually correct, we assume it is, because we agree. And we also assume we are correct when we disagree, so what we are actually doing, is not entertaining if we are wrong. We think our feelings *infallible.* We can have all the data in the world at our fingertips, but it is us who make sense of it and give it meaning. Even if we don't really know how to connect the dots, or even what we are looking at, we are very likely not going to let that get in the way of us feeling knowledgeable. We will regurgitate what we think we know with confidence, relying on us hearing it from some source that we assume is knowledgeable enough to rely on. > We can't validate it. We just aren't that smart, across enough topics to be knowledgeable in them all. So while we might pick holes in one frame, we will have to accept another. But if what we know had holes, why do we assume that the same source will know about what we don't know? > You know? It gets confusing. And that is *before* all of the other mess gets dumped on top, with political manoeuvring trying to convince us that their cause is actually in support of our values, and marketing and lobbying looking to get us to consume more and more for the profit of others. The world is different, because we are *behaving differently* than we used to behave. We used to be more conscientious of our domains, our knowledge and skill, and had to apply them in order to interact with life. Now, we are able to use a host of tools to provide us the answers, and support our personal views so we don't have to feel the sting of being *wrong.* > Have you noticed that no one is wrong anymore? Sure, we are often wrong, but we needn't admit it because no matter what we say or do, there is some tool that will support our position that we can cite as the truth. The worst people on earth are able to justify their actions and when they can't, are able to blame others for their behaviour instead of take responsibility for themselves. > They made me do it! It is interesting that in a world where we claim to be science and data driven, we put so much faith in our feelings that are triggered by information that can't be trusted. >There is what we know. And then there is reality. I thought that would be a quote from someone smarter than me... but according to a quick search, it seems I said it first in that way. It would be pretty cool if that is the case. Perhaps it will make me a trusted source of information. Some good points here. I think a big difference (and problem) between now and the past is that in the past many people tended to hold jobs for life, or stay with a single company and get promoted internally. So they got incredibly good at that one field of expertise, and didn't need to know too much more. Nowadays, life is far more complex (and definitely over-complex). So even the lowest-paid menial worker will need to change companies to get a pay rise, and is expected to know how to use mobile phones or the internet on computers to access government services, utility companies, banking, and who knows what else. All stuff our ancestors handled by going up to a counter and talking to a human. So we're expected to be experts on lots of different things. That means absorbing lots of information, fast. In the process, stopping to think about what we're reading goes out of the window. It's about absorbing data, and we're encouraged not to question it's accuracy or think about the motives of the organisations feeding us the data.

The job "consolidation" is something I have talked about before. Back in the day, a manager had a secretary and an analyst to aid them (along with others) and now they have to do it all by themselves. All jobs are like this, and then life too. >All stuff our ancestors handled by going up to a counter and talking to a human. A company in Sweden (Klarna) fired a heap of people to use AI instead. The AI worked well enough, but customer satisfaction plummeted and now they are rehiring. However, in the future, there will be generations comfortable with AI, and anxious about talking to real people - so the AI will come back soon enough. I don't think we are currently on average very good at evaluating our own lives. We go outside of ourselves looking for answers, but we are terrible at using our experience to find our own. We all want a pill to get better.

Emotional validation has become more important than factual veracity. We look for mirrors that reflect our beliefs, rather than windows into reality. This intellectual comfort insulates us from genuine learning and makes us vulnerable to manipulation. An excellent analysis of the fragility of our supposed knowledge in the information age, where feeling that we know something outweighs the desire to actually know it.

I'm not sure what the solution to the problem you're talking about is though? We can't all spend all our time diving into the data of everything ourselves... so we kind of have to trust people that are doing the hard work. If your friend shouldn't trust the financial magazine that he likes, what should he do? What would make him more knowledgeable than he currently is?

Walter Lippman, controversial as he might be, pointed out that Democracy will fail because it's impossible to be an informed citizen, as informing oneself about all the topics in an adequate way to be able to vote consciously would take up too much time and energy, every day, because it would mean considering all sides and arguments. That was around 1920. He'd get a heart attack even thinking about that today, and he was right, the overflow of news (not the neutral information) is undermining democracy substantially.

I was thinking through an idea a long time ago about using blockchain technology to allow citizens to vote on policies that affect them so they wouldn't have to rely on politicians... but I think this is the reason why it wouldn't work - how could I vote if my city budget should be spent on building a new intersection when I don't know anything about road construction, city budgets, tenders, trustworthy contractors, traffic flow, etc etc etc. Obviously things get way more complex when talking about state or federal policy. I think ultimately we have to find experts and institutions that we can trust because I can barely keep on top of the things people trust me for, let alone all the areas I don't know.

>I'm not sure what the solution to the problem you're talking about is though? When it comes to information, technology provides some answers through web of trust systems that can take multiple sources, each with confidence scores, and combine them. But for many things, we don't even need that level, we just need to be more aware of the world in general at the local level. My friend needs to consume less from the advertised sources, and instead pay attention to what is happening around him. He sees a lot in his position - he should work out what it means by himself, rather than looking to be right or wrong in comparison to an advert.

Do you have an example of a web of trust systems with the confidence scores? I've heard about it theoretically but I've never actually seen it in action. I understand what you're saying about the local level... if your friend is reading about good economic metrics being achieved, but the people in his community are losing their jobs and their houses, that's a pretty massive disconnect. I guess it'd have to be all about balance, he shouldn't be oblivious to what his peers and competitors are consuming either.

Sorry to disappoint, but it's probably Kant who gave a name to it - noumenon as what's behind the phenomenon, what we can perceive, aka know. And no, I don't think he used the same words you did. And it was probably described before, too, but I personally just know of Kant talking about it. Anyway. Those who always have to agree with you are not your friends. Those who can disagree with you are. All the data in the world doesn't mean a thing if we only interpret it our way, for sure. Data is neutral, we are not. We don't even have to *know* what we're looking for, as we solve that problem unconsciously and find results we ourselves think to be totally unbiased. That's why it's so important to keep disagreement around, not only to self-indulge in thinking that we're better by disagreeing, but to be able to consider the other side, to see the world from their eyes. Taking a step away from the egocentric view, even for a minute. Honest, rational disagreement, as opposite to emotional disagreement, can create middle grounds. But in a system based on emotions, quickly manipulated to buy this and that, to have quick, uninformed opinions within minutes that fade as quickly as they were invented, will not allow real disagreement. Only more emotions.

> And no, I don't think he used the same words you did. I didn't say I described it first! :D *Granted, he might have said it in German.* > We don't even have to know what we're looking for, as we solve that problem unconsciously and find results we ourselves think to be totally unbiased. All that learned experience gives us an intuition also, but we don't question whether our intuition has learned good habits, or bad. As long as it feels "right" we accept it as truth. Keeping that disagreeing voice around, or even someone comfortable (like me) playing the devil's advocate, is vital. But in this world, people would rather be patted on the back for their bad habits.

I think that's a good point about validating data because anymore you can't even count on that. It's getting harder and harder to know what is accurate and what is spun or just all together false.

Even if we "validate" data, if so possible, it's still up for interpretation by ourselves, biased. And our interpretation is based on our experience, which is also based on other data, reaching back further and further. As most of us do not have the capabilities to background-check everything, the most logical response for me is reviewing contradictory interpretation of the same data, apply my personal common sense, and find some accuracy in the middle. And even that is biased.

I agree with you. People seem to be incapable of thinking for themselves, unless they feel they have perfect data. That is impossible. So, what they need to do is start living their life by building their own sense of the world, rather than relying on others to tell them how they are meant to live.

The analogy of infinite lives in a video game that you've mentioned; captures the surreal idea of modern economics deriving from real-world consequences. I think itβs both unsettling and fascinating! I wonder if we normalize systems that reward illusion over production. It provokes the subtle reflection on the economic theatre on which weβre all actors and just doing our part.

You create and sustain your own reality every moment when you are awake. As we search for order in a world of chaos, we tend to attribute familiar traits even to inanimate objects. Faith is one example, with Jesus showing to you on your toast, and your life changing in better because of the good omen. The world is how you think it is, not how it is. Perception is a tricky master, but we can challenge our assumptions and change our routine hunting our habits, everything that make us complacent, as being challenged is the main way to grow. Hard is good, as long as it is not very very hard. And yet, in many cases, people did impossible things just because nobody told them that this is impossible. How is my reasoning?

>Perception is a tricky master, but we can challenge our assumptions and change our routine hunting our habits, everything that make us complacent, as being challenged is the main way to grow. But it is something that can be allowed for. We can look at our own habits and flaws, and then do something that helps us overcome, or mitigate. Yet, most think "knowing more" will be enough - without ever looking at how to apply what they know. >And yet, in many cases, people did impossible things just because nobody told them that this is impossible. The impossible is something I have thought about a bit. A lot of people I believe have misunderstood the Ali quote of "impossible is nothing" taking the meaning as "nothing is impossible". I think what is meant is that "impossible is literally nothing". There is what is possible. Nothing else. When we realise this, we can then act as if anything is possible, without having to worry about the other side, because there is no other side. If we act according to our values, we get the results according to our values.

Our housing market is just starting to go down and all the projections are for about 2% down a year from now. I wonder what the reality is going to be... Nobody really knows. But we will find out a year from now.

Not necessarily, sometimes when house values go down people are afraid to buy, so they choose to rent instead, which means more rental demand which leads to higher rental prices.

Greetings, friend. I think I understand what you're talking about. The thing is, we're surrounded by a lot of information. My professor says information is power. I think that with so much information around us, we often tend to choose what best suits our way of thinking. Our mistake is often to assume it's true and not investigate whether it's true. As you say, sometimes we believe we own the truth because our ego and society have taught us that making mistakes is bad. But I think we also learn from mistakes. Greetings, friend. Have a nice day.

>My professor says information is power. Only if you know how to use it in a powerful way. Having information and not knowing how to use it, means it is still useless. If you know something but can't use it, you don't know it.

In an age where tools are at our disposal to back up about any opinion, I think it's important to tell the difference between real understanding and just going along with what feels easy to believe.
