Weekend Out the Window
<div class="text-justify">

Like many wish, my wife was saying how nice it would be to have longer weekends - even an extra day would make a difference. I agree, but we would need to make that a possibility, would be an extra 20% *at least* extra incoming every month that is usable for our daily needs IRL, which isn't likely going to happen anytime soon. And, by the time we would have that extra, it wouldn't be extra at all, as either our lifestyle would have eaten it away or, inflation would have taken at least that.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23u5bKfQcK4zTprkpMeZqUaEWMu98egE3dD2dBdCP7yF7vqzj4t6VaY9Z3rb5mLZpCPfQ.png)

I have *very little* faith in the inflation reports. At the moment, they are saying it is 7.8% in Finland, but *everyone knows* that actual costs of living are much higher in reality. I am not sure what they are using to calculate their data, but it is not the right set, whatever it is. My wife and I have a pretty set routine for shopping most of the time and the difference on a grocery store trip is stark. And not only that, there is also the "food tax" where companies are including less food in the packets to save costs, which is ridiculous, *because we still eat the same amount!*

We have also noticed it on the odd occasion when we eat out somewhere too, as we have a pretty narrow selection of places to choose from due to Smallsteps' diet restrictions. Paying more for the same meal, not getting enough food to fill the stomach. I get why they do it, but what they are actually going to end up doing is, *losing business,* because it is not great having customers leave hungry.

>But, back to the long weekends...

It would be nice, especially at the moment where we haven't had any weekends at all for a couple months now it seems and, no days completely to ourselves where we are able to choose what we do and when we do it. Every weekday is work, the evenings renovating and the weekends, trying to do more renovation work and visit all the million places we need to, often so we can save a bit more money, which stretches our ability in other areas.

In order to have a long weekend *every weekend* though, that extra money would need to come in consistently and reliably, so it would essentially need to be coming through steady investments, so relatively stable. But, in order to get that kind of return, it would require a large amount of capital upfront, and if we had that kind of money laying about, we probably would have already done it, right?

Getting "that kind of money" is no mean feat, it is going to take effort and likely, a fair amount of risk-taking in order to oversize returns. But, this also means that it is far more likely to be swept away due the very conditions required - it is like driving a car on the limits all of the time and hoping not to hit a patch of oil. Eventually, luck runs out.

>Feeling lucky?

*I am.*

Not because luck has necessarily swung my way so often, but at least for now, I do see the potential for light at the end of the tunnel, even though the tunnel is currently still quite dim. No one really knows how long the bear markets are going to last, nor do they know how deep they will go, but there is consensus on one thing - they always end, *eventually.* However, that doesn't mean everyone is going to benefit at the end, because in order to do so - investments have to be made now.

Essentially, in order to get that long weekend for my wife, we are going to have to make some pretty big moves in the coming year or two to secure a "low buy" position in the market to compound when pulling out from the bear and into the bull. However, this goes against our natural intuition of "save in tough times", even though investing isn't the same as *spending.* As they say,

> You have to spend money, to make money.

But *what it is spent on* is going to be the factor to consider, not the spending of it. In tough times, people are obviously looking to spend their money on survival, to make ends meet. Yet, this hasn't stopped Apple expecting to sell close to 100M new iPhone 14s - which apparently is now considered a necessary part of life for many. Is it an investment?

>No one cares anymore it seems.

The economy is in such a shambles and people are so tired of all of the lockdowns and then inflation and war, that people are just saying, "fuck it!" and spending all they get on consumables. However, at some point these same people are likely going to want to take advantage of the rising economy, but they would have already missed the lows and, have very little to get in with, especially at a higher price. Just look at all those people willing to buy Bitcoin at 50K, but unwilling to buy it at 20K - talk about an opportunity to cost average....

But, what does it matter...

At the end of the day, life is as it is and we are all going to experience it as we do. Dreaming about a long weekend as my wife does might ease some of the burden, but she also knows that she is not interested in actually working out how to make it a reality, let alone going through the steps to accomplish it.

>I'm going to give it a go.

*It's a lifestyle decision.*

Some people spend their time watching football, others fishing, more streaming shows - how come when people take interest in *finance as a hobby,* it is frowned upon?

Luckily on Hive, I am not the only one :)

greetings @tarazkp _
For me the inflation they show in any pate of the world is totally false and you can prove it yourself when you buy, however those statistics they show is to go psychologically adapting people since they have no effective mechanism to control.
Everything will depend on the need to be able to satisfy people's need to irrationally pay whatever it takes for a product.
I hope you can get that week off with your wife.

I don't think finance is frowned upon per se, only by those not in whatever you are. Crypto isn't safe, Stocks are risky, their retirement is gone... I know people are horrified at the market, but, I am investing in it and happy to have the funds to do it.

Even as far as the daily market goes, it's a shark tank, but, it definitely pays to watch it and jump when you can. Notoriously September is the #1 month where stocks drop, but, they may make liars out of the experts this year, we'll see.

I hope you do invest in the market, I think it is the place to win. (and lose big too)

I have a house on the Atlantic seaboard. We fish, clam and scallop. We get mussels and blue crabs. We can eat seafood all day long, but, once in a while, I like a nice steak. My cousins own a charter fishing company so I get seafood even if we don't have time to go. I know I am fortunate and I am grateful every day. We don't really eat seafood every day, but, we actually could. I love it but the rest of the family likes a reprieve now and then.

Someday they may not have a choice.

for that price I could buy a new computer. Crazy. I am just glad that my old phone is still working fine. but than again I only use phone for calling and taking photos...

I need to take some serious steps toward completely ditching the normal work-week routine. I took a step the wrong direction on that path, though, adding a day of manual labor to my library "weekend." Supposedly the district is deciding on a raise in the next couple months, but I do not know whether it's really going to make up for the inflation eating at my current earnings, much less the likely coming crunch as money supply inflation from COVID continues to distort the wider economy over time.

As much as it sucks to take on extra work, if it makes surviving easier and better, investment possible to gain in the future, it is probably worth it for a year or two. The trap is of course, that the extra becomes a relied upon standard - used for living rather than investing.

I know quite a few people over the years on Hive that could do with a little bit coming in each day, but they took a little bit out each day instead and never built an income stream from it. One in the hand is better than two in the bush mentality. But, it is the reliance on the daily income that is the killer on Hive, because unless able to provide something for oneself, it is a reliance on others to provide - and people are predictably going to change their behaviors.

The distortion of the economy is one thing - the *misrepresentation of it, another.

The economy is bad and I can't see myself spending as much money. I don't think inflation is a bad thing but it's bad when the wages can't keep up. I blame the government for passing a bunch of bills and for the money to go to the rich and powerful instead though.

In a way, it's tough for everyone and I believe that everyone should learn some financial education.

If wages keep up with inflation, doesn't it just keep inflating though?

>I blame the government for passing a bunch of bills and for the money to go to the rich and powerful instead though.

It took a circuitous route - they first put trillions in the hands of ordinary people, but they could only spend it in a few places. It was an appearance of helping with the intention to grab more wealth, this time taking it from our future pockets.

RE: Weekend Out the Window
You have talked about a very good topic. I also sometimes wonder at the amount of memory in our country and wonder what they think it's torture where everything is so expensive. Where the value of currency is decreasing day by day. Along with that, the price of essential goods from food companies to take everything is going up. Some of us have been thinking for a few days that even though the prices of many products have not increased, the quality of food has gone down and the quality of the food has also gone down. Which is really funny.

Many do that here already, at least in the summer and in the middle of winter when the lakes are frozen over. Even if it is a couple meals a week, it can be a reduction of 10-20% of protein costs.

I haven't come across people who think *finance* as a hobby is to be frowned upon. *Crypto* as a hobby, yes. I feel terrible for all those of my friends, now mostly retired, who are watching the stock market, and their retirement "savings" fall. But those same folks have been telling me I'm crazy for investing in crypto, property, instruments, and art. Unlike them, I'm not crying over the stock market today, because I sold it all a year ago to put it into property.

So what is frowned upon is finance as a hobby that does not follow scripted, expected norms. This is true of most things these days it seems - conform, or you are an alt-right, Q crazy, conspiracy theorizing, domestic terrorist.

Give it a go!

>I haven't come across people who think finance as a hobby is to be frowned upon.

They see it as "talking about money" which is considered bad manners and base or something. It is one of the reasons why so many people aren't financially educated and make poor decisions.

And yes, it is sad to see so many people sticking to their financial guns, even though they keep getting hammered time and time again.

Yep, that's true. *"There is no evil that lasts 100 years or a body that resists it"* therefore, we have to be ready to take the bulls by the horns as soon as the opportunity presents itself. :)

> everyone knows that actual costs of living are much higher in reality.

Wasn't there a thing where they'd get the average basket of food to calculate inflation, eg bread, milk, meat etc, but they'd sneakily exchange, say, steak for mince? So there's still meat in the basket but cheaper cuts. On paper, inflation is doing just FINE....ugh.

Ah, the dream of a long wkd... I had to have an utter mental breakdown and never recover so that I had extra days, but the poor hubs has to slave away... And my long weekends aren't the same without him in it. Sigh.

Long weekends are good, it would be something to fill them. For example, a hobby that will never get bored.
I did nothing for a few days and this morning I bought 700 bags of Chaos. I hope to earn 350 Hive on this deal. Trading is my hobby.

I wish we had that rate. They say it is yearly %80 right now if you believe. However, the price of everything has been increased more than triple in one year. You could imagine our faith in it..
