When it's raining
<div class="text-justify">

The weather has been terrible so far this spring around here in my opinion, though perhaps some people will like sleet, hail and single digit temperatures with "midsummer"only five weeks away. The weather is as the weather does and while it might affect our mood, it doesn't care, because why would it?

I am currently sitting with a needle in my vein having the infusion treatment and can already feel the affects, the fog on my thoughts descending. It is always interesting to write at these times as I feel like I am even more mentally impaired than normal.

https://i.imgur.com/EvlTjof.jpg

In a recent comment on a [post](https://hive.blog/hive-174578/@tarazkp/the-ups-and-downs-of-a-life-expected), I mentioned how financial considerations often get the limelight, as they are so directly linked to our experience. We are always aware when we *can't afford* something and in a consumer society where all roads lead to purchasing something, we are constantly reminded of what we can't have.

Just today, I have had to consider what I can't afford multiple times as every discussion with the plumbers or the electrician have resulted in compromises because the preferred alternative is just too expensive to do, *given our financial situation.* This often seems the case, as there always seems to be a compromise decision of some sort and it might not matter in what economic bracket one appears. "I didn't buy the better private jet, I just couldn't warrant the expenditure."

This constant reminder of not being able to afford what we have been programmed to want, means that we are continually driven into a scarcity mindset through experience, that we can't have something because we do not have the resources available for it. This makes all kinds of things appear more valuable than they are, despite them being irrelevant to our actual needs. And when these things are driven by social conditioning, we want them even more and the influence of *not having them* might have a greater affect as they are compounded by the feeling of social inadequacy also.

We tend to get at least part of our sense of personal worth from referencing those around us and seeing *how we are doing* in relationship to our peers. The waters have been muddied greatly by resources no longer needing to be held in order to have though, with people satisfying their cravings through debt accrual. Two people that get the same salaries for example, could have very different material holdings - is the big house, car and branded clothing because the friend is better with money, *or worse?*

Debt is a killer and while we all know this, it keeps increasing in the world. The drive to have our demands met seems far stronger than our desire to make sure we have resources available - living on credit is the order of the day, year, decade and likely, century also. Our whole world is economically geared towards expenditure on disposable products to increase profits - and then we wonder why the environment is in such poor shape and appears irreparable.

We want better, but we don't want to go without, no matter how useless the items are we want are - and we will consistently choose debt to have them, no matter the future cost to ourselves and those around us. When we are constantly reminded by our surroundings of what we are missing, we seem to focus more on that than what we have got.

As I see it, we are what we eat and when we surround ourselves with advertising from companies which are looking to turn a profit by any means necessary, it is no wonder we spend and tend to overspend on what we are directed to buy. When we change our surroundings to support our economic health, do we start to become financially healthier?

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't mind a period where financial considerations didn't take so much attention and instead, I could focus on other things. The problem is, everything costs something.

The key here is to be grateful for what we have. I barely think about what I can't afford because I'm content with what I have and regularly think about how lucky I am to have the things I do - a wonderful girlfriend, two lovely cats, a view of the rice fields. Of course, this is much harder to do if one does not even have the money to provide for basic needs like food and shelter.

This is a salient point, isn't it? We have extended the concept of "basic needs" well past the needs of survival - Maslow's hierarchy is a mess.

Well, I have gone through some anti-consumer conditioning a decade or two ago. Through the principles of advertisement, too. And I watch ads with great pleasure because of my interest in the science behind those. I don't care that much about products in general. And I have been living a life of relative minimalism. Relative...

Quite relative. Not quite minimalism.

I am also not impervious to such effects and there are spheres, aspects, or whatever of life where they kind of get me. Where passion beats reason and the consumer's behavior outweighs reason. Those might be few. But I know when I'm afflicted ;) And I can do almost nothing about it.

There's a thing that helps. Distancing. The word is kind of dirty now in my mind but still, it is its own cure. Distancing in time, in perspective, in interest, from passion.

The Zen way.

Away from passion, objectivity grows.

Also, the addict's hope. Quit drinking coffee for a while and you kind of learn not to crave it. Same with everything else that we're psychically addicted to.

We have a saying that translates as: "Far from the eyes, far from the heart." And it works for far more things than those implied. Or are they? Implied. Maybe all the things it works for were implied.

I have found through experimenting on my wife, that not getting junk mail helps a lot :D - A simple sticker on the mailbox is all that is needed.

> "out of sight, out of mind"

Right...I knew that one...at some point.

> Camera gear?

Once upon a time. "I can only afford" a piece at a time and I learnt I don't need that much stuff in order to produce good results. Although I would never get sponsored by the C-brand or the N-brand if I kept telling you so. Finding your own style is more difficult and more important. There was a time that the available gear defined my style. And in a way, it still does. But I need to first transcend that and then find the tools. Reverse engineering or something like that.

> not getting junk mail helps a lot

Interesting. That was never part of what influenced me or my wife. Rather...the word of mouth kind of marketing. The social environment. Colleagues, friends, the fashion that runs in the company of such.

The summer hasn't even begun, yet. The second half of May is when it begins on average. I consider the summer of to have begun when birch trees have fully grown leaves. How fast they will grow depends on the temperature.

The 10-day forecast looks good:

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/markkujantunen/LxE7l70R-image.png)

Next Sunday will be rainy and cool. But it looks like the summer will begin next Monday.

It's collectivism.
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need", makes abilities liabilities, and needs assets. If you're disciplined with money, that's a liability. If you're careless and short sighted, that's an asset.
This is why I'm so excited about non-collectivist money like crypto. It doesn't live in any one place, and isn't issued by any one authority; so it's not subject to their ridiculous, collectivist incentive structures.
