World of Prompts
<div class="text-justify">

I am not sure how this is going to go, but it is time. I was Smallsteps' age when I was introduced to and read about the fantasy world of Middle Earth for the first time, and it has had a lasting impression on me. It isn't because it was the best writing and it is quite childish in many ways. But, it was the first book that I really read that captured my imagination to the point where I was comfortable building the whole world, to generate the characters, set the scenery and *make it mine.*

![IMG20240923201732.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23z7Dcouz8KYjpaJz6AVb7Ndks14dsWBfeBMVR7heUgKQErdRi54rLWN8XKruauCfmxv4.jpg)

> In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.

The book itself is almost four hundred pages, so it will take about three months to complete at around ten pages a night, on my nights. My wife and I take it in turns to read to Smallsteps, so it will be slow going, but I am hoping that we can reference it and discuss parts of it as we go also. I am looking forward to reading it too, as I don't visualize things easily now, but I already have this book burned into my memory, so it *should be* easier.

We started the first chapter tonight and it is pretty obvious that Smallsteps is going to have to advance her vocabulary in English. Her English is good, but as you can imagine, with nearly all of her life including her school in Finnish, it overpowers her English. And then, when I speak with her, my own vocabulary and ways of speaking aren't nearly as rich as a book can be, so it is good to introduce new words.

This has another benefit (I hope) as most Finns struggle with ambiguity, and Smallsteps is the same. In language, this means that if they get to a word they don't know, it disrupts them, and they have to know the meaning, even if they were to read or listen on and infer it from the context. Smallsteps constantly asks, but I have made the active decision (told her about it too) to only explain the words that matter for understanding, as well as interesting words that she can use herself.

She of course doesn't notice how much she is improving in English, as it is always weaker than her Finnish. It is a bit like being ambidextrous, but not quite being able to get the same power and precision on the weaker side. I hear the changes in her language though, as new words she has learned are inserted into conversations smoothly, or she works a little harder to find a different word to explain something. I am hoping that in time she will be able to have the same richness and speed as she does in Finnish, and it is going to be interesting to see if there is a difference in her humor or thinking process.

The way we speak affects many parts of our lives in perhaps subtle, but important ways. For instance, people who have languages without a future tense (like Finnish), tend to be better at saving money and organizing and planning. I am not sure why, but it could be that when there is no future, things get spoken about and done now instead.

> This could also be why my wife is so impatient when something is on her mind.

*Or not.*

But, the main reason to get Smallsteps "consuming" these kinds of stories, is that it forces her to use her imagination. No pictures, just words, and characters that don't exist. She has already mentioned in the first few pages when hobbits were described, that her picture changed into a little person, like a dwarf, rather than a rabbit. Obviously, her brain just pictured something familiar that sounded similar to the word.

>And this is what is so cool about books.

I will read her the book, she will hear the same words, but she will never have the same image in her head of that world that I have. The elves will look different, Gandalf will be different, and her headspace will be filled with her own creations, developed from prompts. When we lose our mental creativity, we lose one of the most important parts of being human, yet I think that is where the world of generative AI is taking many people.

Instead of homogenization, Smallsteps can spend some more time in *hobbitization.*

‘There and Back Again’, usually shortened to “The Hobbit”, my son Matthew loves it. Now friend @tarazkp, which edition do you have, because basically there are two editions, one (the original) dating back to 1937 by George Allen & Unwin (UK) and the more recent and new owners of the rights, who improved and updated the original version, Editorial Argentina Minotauro (1964). I own both editions and I like the new edition better, as some chapters not finished in the first edition have been completed.

It is the new edition, and I think it was updated again in the 90s. Not sure what they have changed though. If I remember correctly, I have only read the original version once.

I did 10 pages of Harry Potter to Lia and Trisha. Now Lia typically finishes 2-3 1000 page fantasy series in a month!! It is insane and she is 13. Trisha also finished the whole harry potter series and now into Rick Riordon's books.

Keep at it. There is no substitute!

Reading is the best. I am hoping that Smallsteps will end up being an avid reader for both enjoyment and self-development. I think my next article will be about what I am reading (listening to) as an audiobook. Seems it is easier for me to listen now.

I know that @dbooster has been reading these books to his kids for a while now. I never read them until I was older, but when I was a kid, I dived deep into the Narnia books and Ivanhoe. That last one was tough. It's a beast of a book like The Hobbit, but oh so good. I also read a good book called Gray Magic by Andre Norton. It was like Narnia, but leaned heavier towards the King Arthur mythos.

I have read the Narnia series, the Mary Poppins series, and lots of Roald Dahl - this felt like the natural progression. I really hope she likes it and becomes somewhat a nerd.

@dbooster ·
I first read The Hobbit to my son when he was 8. At the time his English was terrible and he mostly defaulted to Japanese. I thought he understood almost nothing as we read through, but he did seem to enjoy it, or maybe he just enjoyed me reading to him. He laughed at the troll scene when I did funny voices and also when the dwarves were trying to keep Beorn happy when meeting him. The next year I read it again and he surprised me by understanding more and by remembering a lot of it. Apparently he had understood more the previous year than I had thought. The third year, when he was 10, after we reread The Hobbit, we continued into LotR and read all three of them. I repeated that again last year. He understood it all remarkably well, despite the more advanced syntax and vocab over The Hobbit. I'm kind of playing with the idea of venturing into parts of The Silmarillion next time we go through all of them, but that one may still be too much for him.

The Hobbit was really the first *real* book I read to him. We had been doing entirely picture books up until that point. I knew it was probably a larger leap than I should have taken, but I really love Tolkien and I wanted to share that love.

I hope your daughter also really enjoys it!

> No pictures, just words

Sounds like a Hobbit value to me. I need more of this in my life. Our 20-second clips on EDM news and highlights via Moon Lvnding drawfs any of the traffic we get to read our long-form journalistic pieces. It is infuriating!

Also chiming in to say that I was a 2 language learning growing up as a kid, and I'm really thankful I was open to that experience.

I'm not sure if speaking Hebrew gave me a different perspective since it is so much different to English. It felt more like a religious language than a conversational one, even if I did travel to Israel a few times and use it colloquially. Mostly it was my mom's way of talking shit in public without other people knowing what she was saying to me!

Now that I have close family living in Israel (sister, nephew, niece), Hebrew is a bit more important because it is another way to communicate with my family. Now that I'm learning Spanish though, I finding myself stumbling over the Hebrew words when my brain is looking for the Spanish word to translate from English. I didn't see that coming.

My grandmother used to read me children's stories, maybe that's why I am so imaginative, before I do something I plan and imagine it and even visualize myself doing it, it's like a warm up, one of the first stories I read in my childhood was The Pied Piper, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Magic Beanstalk, and Jack and the Magic Beanstalk.

I also usually read stories to my children, it is something that is lost, now they prefer to give them a phone or a tablet, I do not know if it makes them smarter, but I can assure you that they listen and imagine the stories, they are happier.

For a long time Hobbit was the only english book I had read. Now I have read the Hobbit and Berserk. For me Berserk is the best fantasy books I have ever read and probably the best books I have read period. But they are definitely not suitable for kids. It's been a while since I read the Hobbit or Lord of The Rings. But I watch Lord of the Rings almost every year.

While there are plenty of better fantasy books out there now, what I like about Tolkien is there is some kind of innocence in them - it is the granddaddy of them all.

Ah, the Hobbit. That is an awesome book for sure. I remember my imagination running wild when I first read it. Then watching the movies helped make the images clearer, and added more details that were missing. I hope you read it to her with voice effects to make the experience better.

While I loved the movies, it was also disappointing because my own imagination was replaced by the movie characters instead. It is a type of hijacking of imagination. It is an interesting phenomena really.

>I hope you read it to her with voice effects to make the experience better.

I normally do. Or with a lot of intonation. Finnish is a monotone language for the most part, and I don't want her English to be flat :D

Nothing a reread of the books won't fix. Once you read the character's description, it should become clear again. Although I did think the movies did well in recreating the characters.

When Jarrah was learning to read, he read The Twits by Roald Dahl on a car trip to Scotland. Out aloud. It was hilarious and painstaking.

One

At

A

Time.

Then the book he picked up directly after that, in his own, was The Hobbit.

He was six years old.

After that there was no stopping him. He DEVOURED books.

I think we underestimate how fast we can improve at something to a decent level, because the start is so painful.
