<div class="text-justify"> > # We Talk Friday >(WTF) This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below. --- --- # We Talk Friday Ep. 17: If it Ain't One Thing > If it ain't one thing, it's the other. My wife and daughter went to the shops to pick up a few things and parked in the underground carpark there. And, as my wife reversed, someone else in *a rush* reversed into the back of our car. The damage is minor, *but there is damage.* And while we can get it covered by our insurance, it is not worth the premiums. My wife said that the same woman was at the registers when they were there, had forgot her wallet and couldn't pay, and then said frustratedly she would go home and get it. > Don't drive angry. A few years ago a similar thing happened to me in almost an identical spot, so unlike my usual approach, *I don't blame my wife* for the accident. I was actually very, *Very cool with it - but it is always something, isn't it? And it is always worse when the cost incurred is due to someone else's poor behaviour. But unfortunately, like it or not, sometimes... > You just have to suck it up. Thankfully, the damage isn't bad enough to stop it being driven, but it is unsightly, so we will take it to the crash repairer to see what they will charge for it, and then decide if we will get the work done. I am half thinking of just buffing it back to clean it up, and putting a bit of silver spray paint over anything that is left. > I can't put my graffiti skill to use. Note: *I have no graffiti skills.* The other woman called my wife soon after talking to her insurance company, and said that when the "fault is unclear, it balances out" - but it would be interesting to see who is actually at fault, given that the carpark must have cameras. However, for a minor accident, is it worth the effort? I don't think so, but I really do hate it when people lie to save face. And that is what it is, because she has insurance too. *Ah well...* It could be worse. No one was hurt, the car is driveable, and it might make my wife consider checking and then rechecking before reversing for a little while. Ever been in a fender bender? That's good that there was just a minor issue but still there's always a need for people to drive safe, sometimes, what I have experienced is that people are so rude that they do these kinds of things intentionally and then don't even know how to apologise and accept their mistakes. Once a man hit my vehicle intentionally and even after doing this he didn't even bother to get off his car to solve the purpose but rather just throwing off his attitude.!

Accidents will always happen. The question is what we learn from them. You address the topic of guilt, and it's interesting because you may have felt frustrated at the time, but when we get frustrated, what do we resolve? Again, the question is what we learn in the process.

The only time I've ever been in a fender bender was once a million years ago. We were stopped at a red light when the car behind us bumped us slightly, enough to nudge us forward but nowhere near enough to hit the car in front. We weren't far from home so led them there and the driver was an extremely apologetic little old lady, her foot had slipped off the brake apparently. There wasn't a lot of damage to either car and no one was hurt so I don't know if we even bothered exchanging details never mind reporting it. Vaguely related I once had to get on the horn (which I really hate doing because it hurts my ears a lot) and even that only barely stopped a young driver from reversing into me. They were parked in a bay and I had pulledu p perpendicular to them to reverse into another bay one down from them. I paused briefly so that someone who was up my arse (despite the indication saying I was about to turn in, I guess they either failed to notice as a lot of people seem to just fail to notice these days, or they thought I was going to nose park) could make the decision to back off or go around. While I'm there I note the kid is starting to reverse. I give them a moment because they're in a tiny car and I'm in a SUV, I would be taking up their entire rear view mirror. They continue backing out. I give them a moment more because you have to check behind when you're reversing and they can't miss me unless they're blind in which case they shouldn't be driving because I will literally be taking up the entirety of their rear view mirror now. They continue backing out. I tap the horn (and silently cry because that stung) and they stop and look startled and then slightly sheepish. Slightly confused I finish parking (as the car that had been behind me is gone or backed off but either way not a problem anymore) and carry on. Much later my daughter fires a driving instructor (she was at the tail end of her required hours and I'd wanted her to do a few lessons with an instructor to make sure I hadn't missed too much) because he apparently told her off for...checking behind while reversing because you're supposed to keep your eyes on the road or something. Figured that explains a lot. There's been several near misses that didn't get further than that because I check obsessively after this one incident where I nearly sideswiped a motorbike. They had been going way over the speed limit and the only reason they didn't get sideswiped was because I felt something wrong when I was changing lanes even though my checks and rechecks showed all clear so I'd done extra checks and rechecks and then started moving over super slowly. Had I gone normally like I logically should have I would have knocked into them as they were coming up. As it was I pulled back into the lane I was leaving as soon as I registered the engine whine (which was almost literally a second from hearing it to them flying past me to it fading into the distance) and they flew off possibly none the wiser and I was trying not to have anxiety atttacks while driving. I think people who are at fault are always going to try to insist "fault is unclear" both to avoid at any and all cost the bad feelings that happen when you stuff up and also because insurance blah blah blah when it's your fault. I guess if it "had" to happen (which it wouldn't if people would kindly PAY ATTENTION when handling a giant plastic and metal death trap) it's a good thing it was low impact with no injuries. Hope the dent buffs out alright :S

>checking behind while reversing because you're supposed to keep your eyes on the road or something. Figured that explains a lot. You know, since coming to Finland where people are generally pretty god drivers (terrible at overtaking and in traffic though) I have realised that in Australia we aren't taught to use our mirrors properly. Here, they are very good with their mirrors (obviously not the one in the carpark) and it makes sense. If a truckdriver doesn't turn their head, they can still reverse. The problem is, if people don't check their mirrors properly. Many these days just rely on the sensors, which is likely what this woman did in her fancy car. The motorbikes annoy me at times everywhere. Too many don't know how to position themselves on the road to be seen, and then too many are wanks that drive much too fast through traffic. They expect that people are going to see them doing 200km an hour on a mosquito... If only people paid attention...

Apparently if you're changing lanes or reversing or pulling out you have to head check anyway. Good thing I taught my kids to mirror check/head check/mirror check while changing lanes/reversing/pulling out as that's what the driving test wanted so I guess it's a good thing that the motorbike incident happened because prior to that I didn't always head check because I could use mirrors and also when I was doing my driving test the cop told me not to x_x I have been telling all the kids (the ones from gym as well as mine) not to rely on reverse cameras (they don't work at night anyway or at least the one in my outlaws car didn't, good thing I can park without it!) or spot mirrors but you know. > They expect that people are going to see them doing 200km an hour on a mosquito... I am so glad I had finished eating before reading this.

>**When the fault is unclear, it balances out** Glad no one got hurt, but yeah, dealing with insurance when it’s clearly not your fault just adds insult to injury. People being in a rush tend to leave more damage behind than they realize.... physically and financially. I’ve been in one of those minor fender benders too, and it really is the most frustrating kind. Not bad enough to throw a fit, but just annoying enough to ruin your week and cost you money. Hope the repair quote doesn’t make you cry. If it does, silver spray paint and denial isn’t the worst Plan B 😂

last oktober 9th costed me my premium i was standing still while another person took a short trun and scratched the rear of my car , this year that same car got totalled because some one decides to switch lanes while i was taking over ... so no more premium for me at the moment but at least i got a better car out of the deal since i was all risk insured. And now i'm really thinking of getting a dashcam front and back.

I had a somewhat similar experience. It was about 13 years ago in our subdivision in my home country, the Philippines. It was about a year after I had graduated college and started working for my dad's firm. I had two college students in the car, my juniors, we can call them. Part of our university's curriculum is an On-The-Job Training class where you work for a local firm to earn real life skills beyond what the university can teach. We we're heading to a job site - a residential construction area within our subdivision's perimeter. This is when the "event" happened. I was driving into an intersection while I was pointing out landmarks and previously completed construction projects in our area. There was a big house at the corner that kind of blocked my view of incoming cars. It was a blind spot. I peeked in a bit and got the nose of my car into the crossing to see if there were any incoming cars. I saw an old man on the wheel, but he was looking down! He wasn't paying attention. Next thing you know.... *crash!* It wasn't deadly or anything but it did leave damage to my car's front left area. Left headlight was completely destroyed. You get the idea. I called my dad shortly after and he ran immediately towards the scene (our house was only a couple of hundred meters away). He did all the talking while I had to walk back my new employees to the office. Later on, I was called in to the police station to complete the report. My dad tried to convince me that we had to make it seem like I was the one at fault. Just because the older guy who crashed into my car (who wasn't paying attention to the road!) did not have any insurance! And from an off-the-record discussion with my dad, the older guy said he was indeed not looking at the road because he was looking at the food in his passenger seat! He was delivering lunch to his son's house! I was furious at first! How is the accident my fault when I was not the one who was not paying attention? Even though I was hesitant at first, I eventually caved. This way, there's an easier claim to our insurance, plus, we get to help the old guy move forward with his life. Was it fair? Was it justified? At least nobody got hurt. I think, at the very least, someone learned something that day.

That’s really frustrating, especially when the damage wasn’t even your wife’s fault. I’m glad no one got hurt, but it’s annoying how people try to avoid responsibility. Saying “fault is unclear” when they clearly reversed in a rush feels unfair. I’ve been in a similar small accident before, and honestly, sometimes it’s just not worth the stress of going through insurance. I remembered that as I was able to make a turning a motorcycle cross and hit me from the driver side. It is an experience I couldn't forget easily for the car that didn't even belong to me then. And here, I don't think we often use our third-party insurance here. It's the car owner who has a premium, or should i call it comprehensive insurance that gets to use the service. Many drivers just restort repairing their car or the other person car themselves without involving the insurance to the best of my knowledge, though. I hope the repair won’t cost too much!

Here it is rare to do this, unless very minor, because people want their cars in the best shape possible, even if they are pieces of crap :D Third party is compulsory here, but most have fully comprehensive. Insurance is a scam though.
