This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

# We Talk Friday Ep. 9: Materials of War

Do you remember how after the Twin Towers attack travel security changed forever, with all kinds of bands on liquid sizes, and nail clippers, and shoes coming off, and all toiletries in clear plastic bags - because everything could be used as a weapon. Then there were websites and security experts showing that even with all the bans, much of the acceptable items could be used as weapons of some kind anyway. Trillions spent on stopping terrorism on planes, but most of the planes that are falling out of the sky - are due to Boeing's shoddy production and design practices.

> Trillions spent on security upgrades around the world.

It kind of reminds me a bit of the trade wars that are currently ongoing, where the US government said that China couldn't have high-end AI-powering chips from Nvidia for national security reasons, and everyone was okay with that. China's nerds developed AI cheaper and faster anyway. Now, China is limiting access to some rare earth minerals that are needed for wind turbine, batteries, robotics and *military gear, *citing security concerns.

> The problem is - the US can't replace the supply.

Perhaps their nerds will innovate away from the need for these minerals that China controls 90% of the supply of - but that is going to take some time. Because while software is pretty easy to develop, physical material can't be created out of thin air. It is a good reminder as to the real value of the trillion dollar software companies - they are valuable because of the userbase willing to spend, *not the software.*

And I think it also highlights that while the world has changed as the digital revolution has taken off, when push comes to shove, *tangible* still has value. However, over the last years where we have embraced the online world, we have put massive amounts of value into the intangible, where the economies are driven by untouchable assets, whether it be business software, a social platform, or a gaming app on a device. Again, trillions, and trillions spent - *on nothing.*

There is security in storing untouchable value, but there has to also be the realisation that at least at this point in our technological knowhow, we live in *the real world.* A digital roof doesn't keep us warm, and a bite of a digital apple doesn't fill the stomach.

Maybe, if there is any "good" to come out of all of the economic greed and stupidity of politicians and billionaires, it is that it might highlight that the "own nothing and be happy" slogan is bullshit. Own nothing might give freedom in some way, but when personal supply chains are reliant on others who are able to throttle them at will, then owning nothing means having nothing to trade.

Well, maybe your body.

A possible benefit of all the current upheaval might be that we get back to localisation.

The US (and many other places) have these "rare" earth minerals. They aren't rare at all. But extracting them is a messy business and it takes time to get set up. The Chinese deliberately went in cheap so that mines in other parts of the world closed down because they couldn't compete. Clever strategy, but give it 3-5 years and the closed down mines can re-open again. Might need a bit of relaxation on environmental laws, the West is very good at shunting pollution-generating processes off to other parts of the world.

But more generally, if countries have their own mines and industries working primarily for domestic markets, I think that can have benefits. It creates duplication in the supply chain to help resist shocks, it creates jobs, and it reduces the environmental cost of shipping clothes, cheap plastic widgets and other goods halfway around the world.

This is an eternity in the current environment, isn't it?

>. Might need a bit of relaxation on environmental laws

The west is also good at not caring about the environment, when it isn't in their best financial interest.

Localisation should happen of course in many areas - as well as standardisation of many design aspects so more can be put into impactful development. What is going to be interesting in the future though, is who is going to want to do the types of jobs created? People will if forced by economic conditions - and it seems that is where we are headed.

I do wonder about the jobs that it could make. I suspect that in many cases they will be better paid than the retail/service jobs too many people in the West currently have. They'll also contribute more to real GDP than the public sector jobs currently making up 30-50% of jobs (depending on the country) which are really just a drain on the economy.

Mining and resource processing jobs are often far better paid than the more menial office jobs, to compensate for the long hours, hazardous conditions and being away from home. I reckon factories will mostly be AI automated plants, so the jobs there will be supervisory level or maintenance and quite technical; there will be less of them than in traditional factories, but again hopefully better paid.

Dear @tarazkp !

Many East Asian historians have even claimed that another war between European Christianity and Islam will break out!

Some East Asian scholars have predicted that after the war between Christianity and Islam broke out in Europe, a war between China and Japan would break out in East Asia.

That is why I have always believed that real estate is one of the best investments to make. That is only true if the area where you are buying real estate is in a politically stable and economically viable location. USA fit that bill for a very long time and I think it still does, but with the current administration political stability premium in USA is rapidly melting away. That and the propensity of the local governments to rely on real estate as a source of revenue I am unloading my real estate assets.

Where to place the assets now is a big question though as I feel like I have enough exposure to BTC and ETH, enough exposure to Gold and Silver. Right now paradoxically cash and 7% investment grade bonds sound quite appealing...

Need to say that It’s true that we have poured so much value into digital things like software and online platforms, but in the end, it’s the physical stuff that really matters.

You can’t replace real-world materials with code, especially in times of conflict or crisis. It’s a good reminder that while the digital world is growing, we still live in a physical one.

Yes. Unfortunately, there are benefits- but also a lot of drawbacks. We will probably have to get my daughter a phone before she starts her new school, because it will be necessary for various timetables and things that she will need and the phone-watch she has now is not enough :/
