Hive: #3 Blockchain For Gaming
Hive is the [blockchain](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/blockchain) that is overlooked.  That said, those of us who are involved with the blockchain each day know there is a lot being built.  Each month we have new [applications](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-application) rolling out.  At the same time, those that are already here receive upgrades.

This is presenting us with a situation where the offerings of the [ecosystem](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-ecosystem-digital) keep increasing.

Hive has the reputation, at least among those who know about it, as being a [social media](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-social-media) ecosystem.  It was, after all, built around the concept of blogging.  While that is still a large portion of the activity, we are seeing other areas rising up.

One of those is gaming.  This is due, mostly, to the success of [Splinterlands](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/what-is-splinterlands).  That became one of the top blockchain games, helping to elevate Hive.  It is a fact that is reflected in the numbers.

## Hive Getting Some Recognition

According to [the information by Dapp Radar](https://bitcoinist.com/polygon-2nd-largest-gaming-blockchain/), Hive was the number 3 blockchain in the month of March in terms of daily unique [wallet](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-wallet) addresses tied to gaming.  It was overtaken by Polygon.

Obviously, we can see the overall numbers are not impressive in general.  This shows how small blockchain gaming, like most of the [cryptocurrency](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/cryptocurrency) world, truly is.  Nevertheless, as they say, any publicity is good publicity.

With things being so small, short term moves are bound to have a major impact.  We also could see big changes in the rankings if a single game starts to get some attention.  This is what happened with Polygon.  

The difference between Hive and the #1 spot is a couple hundred thousand wallets.  That might sound like a lot considering where things are yet, in the world of gaming, it is a drop in the proverbial bucket.

## One Of The Biggest Markets

Why is gaming so important?

Simply it is one of the biggest [markets](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-market) there is in terms of users.  The numbers are stunning, only outpaced by social media.

Here are some of what we are dealing with:

>According to the latest [data](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-data), there are approximately 3.09 billion active video gamers worldwide.

>That figure has risen by over 1 billion in just seven years (that’s a 32% increase).

>And the number of gamers is expected to hit 3.32 billion by 2024.

There are roughly 3 billion gamers right now.  The largest blockchain has about 350K unique wallets.  Since we can presume there is some percentage that are bots, we know the number of individual (human) users is lower.

This shows there is a lot of room for growth.

>In fact, the gaming market has a current valuation of $197.11 billion.

>And numbers continue to grow with each passing year. By 2025, the gaming industry is set to be worth over $268 billion.

This is an enormous number.  The valuation is expected to grow significantly.  We are not only dealing with a large user base, the [growth rate](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-growth-rate) is fantastic.

All of this spells big potential for Hive.

## On-Chain Activity Does Matter

This also highlights how important numbers are and on-chain activity.  It is easy to fall into the idea that engagement does not matter.  We see a lot of people on Hive interacting on [Twitter](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-twitter) and [Discord](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-discord) while doing almost nothing [on-chain](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-on-chain).

The numbers compiled by Dapp Radar shows that entities are looking at what is taking place.  [Transactions](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-transaction) do matter as do number of wallets.  A few thousand people extra logging in and engaging does make a big difference.  

Many of us believe Hive offers some very unique benefits that we do not see elsewhere in cryptocurrency.  A lot of this is technical, applying to [scaling](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-scability-scaling).  However, we do see some things such as the [resource credit](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-resource-credits-rc) system which separates Hive from the rest of the blockchain world.

This is something that we should be able to leverage for much better ranking.  One thing to keep in mind, within blockchain gaming, any data posted to the network comes with zero [transaction fees](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-transaction-fee).  This is not the case with Polygon or Wax.  Each carries with it some fees to interact.

Of course, there is the fact that Hive has no [smart contract](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-smart-contract) capability, at least on the base layer.  With gaming, this is a big drawback since much of that is centered around [non-fungible tokens (NFTs)](https://leofinance.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-non-fungible-token-nft).  Nevertheless, that is a situation that is being worked upon and addressed.  We do have DLUX and a couple other options that are popping up.

## Number 1 Blockchain For Gaming

Hive should strive to be the #1 blockchain for gaming.  This is a position the community should set out to achieve.

The reason for this is the sheer numbers involved.  Also, it is helpful to stake a position before the fireworks take place.  We can see the numbers are not that elevated so we are not trying to take over the entire gaming world.  It is likely we see a couple more smart contract platforms live before the end of this year.  That should really help the gaming aspect of the ecosystem.

We know we have Ragnarok that is operating on testnet.  This is a game that might not attract huge numbers in terms of users but does have a lot of people excited.  Then we have PsyberX which is a shooter game, something that is very popular in the world of gaming.  Finally, we saw a couple more games emerging over the last few weeks, just adding to the offering.

The point is we have a nice foundation upon which to build.  It is important to start generating some momentum.  Splinterlands is a nice game yet we need 5 of them. 

That would catapult Hive to the top of lists like this.

It should be a focus since we know blockchain gaming is going to explode in the future.  Positioning Hive to take advantage of that is only to our benefit.

Something that can't be quantified by charts is the game actually being any good.
I was a teenager during the years of dial-up so grew up playing browser games. P2E games aren't anywhere near the quality of games from 2005 such as Black Nova or Tribal Wars.
The first game to actually be "fun" is going to change whichever platform it releases on.

The other thing with Blockchain gaming is that games are often advertised as "Blockchain" and "Crypto" before being actual games. 
Therefore it does not feel very appealing to regular users who just want to have fun on a good game, and the competition is extremely fierce on the market.

If an experienced editor produces a Blockchain game while advertising and publishing it the same way as a regular game, it might be a game changer (pun not intended sorry πŸ˜…) !

I know we could use multiple Splinterlands, but so far one with more offerings may be another solution to attract different types of gamers.

Hive is looking good but it's kind of weird to see Polygon get so much during March when most of the other platform numbers dropped. We had a few more games go live this month so I think the number should go up and the idle games are better for people who don't want to pay as much attention.

Hive currently third blockchain gaming isn't an easy achievement considering other blockchains out there and Hive has every reason to aim for the first spot, it is not an easy target but with a few more games replicating the success of Splinterlands Hive stands a good chance at aiming for first spot.

Ohh, yeah Thanks for this sweet one @taskmaster4450 ,Splinterlands has grown to be the most popular blockchain game in the market, as reported by DappRadar. As of January 2023, it boasts over 283,950 daily users and a collection of more than 500 cards to collect. 

Splinterlands isn't just a game; it's a thriving community of over 300,000 users with more than 10 million games played each month. It's also one of the most popular Web3 apps, ranking among the top 10 dApps for daily active users and transactions.

So, this is one of the games we need in Hive blockchain to be known everywhere, we need more of this energy.

The success of Splinterlands is a given.  Hopefully they keep going and bringing in more users.

However, we need other games to step up.  This is where the true growth will come from.  There are a couple candidates that we could step up.  I am optimistic about PsyberX.  We will see how it goes.

I have been an observer of blockchain-based gaming for a year or so now. I first dabbled in Splinterlands, but couldn't really get into it - after all, virtual trading cards weren't my preferred gaming experience. I tried out DCity, which is more my type of sim game, but still, the UX is pretty rough compared to your legacy games like SimCity or the Sims 4.

A shooter game will definitely attract some attention, as we have seen with the proliferation in the gaming space of the Halo franchise, Call of Duty, etc.

I think the most important differentiating factor between Hive and Polygon, is that Polygon Network is merely a sidechain for Ethereum. It doesn't have utility outside of the Ethereum blockchain, it just alleviates congestion temporarily. Polygon also has high tx fees, which doesn't solve Ethereum's gas fee issue, and for gaming, that could become a huge problem with exponentially more demand.

I agree with what you wrote.  PsyberX can take HIVE gaming to another level.  It will be very interesting to see what happens.  As far as I know, Polygon has gone from third to second in this ranking, surpassing HIVE.  Be careful of underestimating it.  Gaming on HIVE works because Hive has a tokenomics that works from day one, but the games, sadly, are not that exciting.  All the users I've approached to Splinterlands in the last few months no longer play Splinterlands, while those I had signed up a few years ago still play.  Splinterlands might have a solid mass of old players, but it also seems to me that it has a problem attracting new players.  In this way the game tokens will not regain value.  Conclusion: PsyberX could take HIVE gaming to another level and HIVE gaming needs this

I've looked at their site today and just like I thought, they have very inaccurate info.

Outside of splinterlands their site is only showing 14 active wallets across all other games. Also no money or trading across most of them and missing other established games.

These sites are never that bothered about good reporting and it took a lot of messages over and back with coingecko to get our page updated properly.

I've sent a message to @DappRadar and the plan now is to get their team to work and fix the hive stats. One site at a time if that's what it takes as these are important marketing channels for the chain.

I have mentioned it several times, the potential of this blockchain into the gaming realm is huge, mainly because of scalability but also because of its decentralized nature. Other blockchains will struggle with the traffic. It's quite curious to see that Wax is the nΒΊ1 on that list while the most known game there AW it's a disaster imo. No gameplay it's just a game de-fi, I'd say the difference is that AW it's now owned by Binance. 

I'm quite sure that we will take that 1st spot in gaming sooner or later, as there is a steady development of several new projects in Hive.

I think one thing that needs to be addressed is how **Blockchain** is first seen as crypto base site, this for me as not really helped the gaming part of it.

Most individual on **Hive** today don't see the gaming part as what they need to engage in, maybe their should be more sensitization on the gaming part of the Blockchain. I'm that can really help in the coming months.

I joined Splinterlands near the peak of the bull market around December 2021. After 16 months, though the quantity of my SPS tokens is 10x larger than before, its value is less than 50% of my original capital. I wonder what will happen once the fireworks take place.

Great article on gaming.  I've been thinking for a few years that blockchain gaming will explode, but it's not happening.  Many of the gaming people I've shown this world to have never gotten into blockchain gaming.  They find it uninteresting and unfunny.  In my opinion, in 2023 blockchain gaming should have been at another level, but it hasn't made much progress.  HIVE has games with interesting tokenomics, but they are not recognized as fun, this can be a barrier to diffusion. I’m waiting for PsyberX that can get gaming on HIVE to another level

I agree that Hive should strive to become the #1 blockchain for games. As you said, lately there are a lot of new games being developed. Future will show what they bring.

Blockchain gaming and its P2E ability has great potential to dominate the online gaming space. There are a number of budding games in the Hive ecosystem that could attract a wide audience and gain mainstream adoption giving more publicity to the chain. Gaming is a front that Hive can dominate in too.
