Rumble Opens Up Cloud Service For Free Internet
Rumble is making a name for itself. It is also a sign of the times we are in.

Following on Elon Musk's free speech mantra, we see another addition in the "fight" against the establishment. Rumble is doing a great [job](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-job) of making a name for itself as an alternative to [YouTube](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-youtube). Many people who [post](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-post-hive) content that is targeted by the largest [video](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-video) platform are also using Rumble.

Now, in addition to a [website](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-website), the [company](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-company-business) has opened up its back end, offering [cloud service](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-cloud-services) as an option to AWS.

At the core of the discussion is censorship.

Of course, before going any further, we have to make one thing clear. Rumble, like Musk before it, is [Web 2.0](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-web-2-0). This is *not* [Web 3.0](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-web-3-0). There is no desire to decentralize and trust is still required. [Accounts](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-account) are not owned by the individual but, rather, the company.

In other words, you are there only with its permission.

# Rumble Fighting For Free Internet

Why did Rumble survive when so many other "alternative" projects failed?

The answer lies in the fact that Rumble built out its own [infrastructure](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-infrastructure-computer). Other sites that appealed to the "freedom fighters" of the [world](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-world) were dependent upon AWS or some other centralized infrastructure provider. This meant that the vulnerability was moved.

While Rumble is not the answer since it is a mirror image of what went before, it does epitomize what is happening. People are waking up to how the present online world operates. The siloed system is in control of every layer.

There is also a lesson for Web 3.0.

[Blockchain](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/blockchain) [technology](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-technology) is a major step but, even with Hive, we are dealing with text storage. Anything to do with audio, video, or images is dependent upon centralized hosting services. This is something we see across the board.

That means the protection is limited.

Rumble is showing the way in this regard by defending itself against attack. Anything posted on its site is resident on [servers](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-server-computer) [owners](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-owner-insurance) and controlled by the company. This means nothing gets taken down without Rumble doing it.

Of course, it is a private company resident in the United States and is subject to [court](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-court-legal) orders. That said, with no [Amazon](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-amazon-company) or [Google](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-google-company) in the equation, the content is protected.

From a [content creators](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-content-creator) perspective, this might only be switching chairs by the pool. Rumble is simply a different dictator. As long as they allow it, everything is fine.

So its assertion of a free internet is a bit amiss when it is really just another silo being constructed.

Nevertheless, it does start the process of striking a blow at some of the dominant infrastructure players.

## True Web 3.0 Infrastructure

Those who are around Hive heard of SpkNetwork. Here is where we see the Rumble idea taken to another level.

The design here is true [decentralization](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-decentralization). Instead of building a server network, a [protocol](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-protocol) is being built. This means that people are going to be able to run infrastructure. One of the keys is that individuals are incentivized to do this.

Here is where the entire discussion shifts.

With Rumble, you have two things. The first is the infrastructure is all controlled by one company. Secondly, even if they opened it up, there is no [incentive](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-incentivize). This is one of the problems with [Lightning Network](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-lightning-network). Without any incentive, [node](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-node) operators will have to monetize in other ways.

That is where things can go amok. With the Internet, we tend to know how what that [monetization](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-monetization) looks like.

Here is where Web 3.0 has to start working for the ground up. Without decentralize [cloud](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-cloud), no matter what is built on top, we are beholden to the infrastructure providers. Since there are a handful of names involved, those are the points of vulnerability.

There is no reason to trust mega-tech to do anything other than what is in its own best interest. These entities, including X, do not stand for freedom, personal ownership, and individual control. What they stand for could be debated for hours but knowing what they are not about is enough.

Does that include Rumble?

The answer to this question really doesn't matter. Rumble is a point of vulnerability. Even if it decides to be pro-freedom, that can change. Remember, [OpenAi](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-openai) is anything but open these days.

In addition to legal ramifications, there could be the [money](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-money) attack. Someone with deep pockets could entice the [owners](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-owner) of Rumble with a huge payday. Even if these people are principled in their approach, most of us have a breaking point. Billions of dollars being dangled is going to get the attention of most.

## The Bitcoin of the Cloud World

I look at Rumble like [Bitcoin](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-bitcoin) in the world of cloud.

It does not matter if Rumble ultimately achieves what it seeks. Odds are it will not, at least to the degree it aspires.

What it does is puts a bullseye on its chest. This is going to be the target if the concept starts to take off.

As the platform grows, the established players will go on the attack. We saw the same thing with Bitcoin. That was the fodder for all the [Wall Street](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-wall-street) and [media](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-media) talking heads. While their focus was on Bitcoin, other things were happening.

I think we see the same thing here.

While Rumble is getting all the attention, the builders can operate in a corner, out of the limelight. With the focus elsewhere, truly decentralized infrastructure, like that which SpkNetwork is putting together, can be finished. It is a massive quandary the industry is confronted with.

[Venture capital](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-venture-capital-vc) money can expedite things. The problem here is a repeat of all that went before. With that path, there are still overlords to ultimately call the shots. Their sole concern is a return. At the same time, they are also not going to jeopardize their ability to operate. If one of their projects is putting their livelihoods at [risk](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-risk) by garnering the attention of [regulators](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-regulator), it isn't going to fly.

Operating without the VC [capital](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-capital) simply mean time is the [swap](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-swap-financial). It can still be done, it simply takes more time. That is an issue since infrastructure is a grind anyway. This only adds to it.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to things going forward.

In the meantime, perhaps Rumble will have some success and keep the prying eyeballs occupied. No doubt Google is watching them closely. We will see if the cloud service is successful enough to awaken the likes of Amazon.

All the while, we keep building. By not buying into the idea of a "free [internet](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-internet)" by Rumble, we can more accurately [address](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-address) the problem.

[Centralization](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-centralization) is always a threat, whether it is Rumble or Amazon.

That is the problem we must solve.

@allentaylor ·
This is the best thing I've seen from you yet.

One of the dynamics of centralization is capital. In the West, we're taught that money buys freedom. Very often, it inhibits it. That is the case with venture capital. Many a CEO have discovered that selling shares of their company puts them in a compromizing position. Suddenly, they can't make all the decisions. Shareholder profits must come first. Many times, that is at the expense of the consumer. Therefore, the money is inhibiting the ability of the business and the customer to reach a consensus on which products and services are available in the market at a fair price point.

Anti-freedom.

So, in a capitalist society, venture capital inhibits the very thing it promises: more consumer choice and personal freedom.

That means the fight isn't so much against centralized structures, per se, but centralization funded by agenda-driven capitalists, a subset of centralization. Without realizing this, many so-called decentralization advocates have bought into the lie that VC money will move them forward faster. They settle on a decentralized technology layer and centralize management driven by financial concerns. What makes Hive unique is that human resources are decentralized. That makes for slow development and less effective marketing, but it achieves the desired goal better ... if the desired goal is more freedom for more people.

@asif7 ·
Monopoly will not going to last long since so many other competitors are up there in the web space. You take for social media giants, once facebook was the one. Then it formed into rebranded Meta which found other rivals like Twitter and Insta.

Same should work for Video sharing platform like You Tube. Rumble can take up space if it starts to add easier tools and applications attracting more users. Then same race would be there for the sites.

That is a normal procedure.

Bold step I must say by Rumble to eliminate google and amazon to deliver service. Not an easy task currently as Google tries to push other service providers to near zero. Let's see where this gets to and how web3 can leverage from it at the appointed time.

@mrchef111 ·
I am on Rumble, and I hope they change the way they monetize the videos. For example, they have Raw Views, Unique Views, Ad Eligible, Filled, eCPM, Earnings. There is a huge difference between the raw views and unique views normally, and then the Ad Eligible is way lower than those, and the filled even lower. We only get paid on the filled. Once monetized on YouTube you have 100% ad-filled rate and 100% Ad Eligible as long as you follow the guidelines for the content, unless you turn monetization off for that video, ads are played on every video. But not the case on Rumble. Sure you can get monetized pretty much right away on Rumble, but their monetization platform/structure is still terrible. In my opinion. :) But then again I make my living from ads on YouTube and ads on my website, so I have a different point of view.

Competition is almost always good. Rumble providing an alternative to Youtube is great. And them going for a more consumer friendly stance is a good strategy. But since they still have full control, they might be a wolf in sheep's clothing. I just wish 3speak gets more popular and increases its userbase.

I am glad I saw something about rumble as I synced my YouTube to both rumble and Odysee I think over three years ago so was hoping 3speak could bring the YouTube sync feature as well.

@robsteady ·
I'm far more interested in them going up against AWS than I am their frontend as a video site. It's nice to see someone is still trying to give another option. With that, though, I can only imagine what kind of lengths Amazon will go to in keeping their stake.

While I know it doesn't directly relate, one good thing truly decentralized video services have coming is the AV1 codec. It will make storage and transmission a lot less taxing and will hopefully make the operation of TRULY free services much more viable.

This insightful comparison of Rumble to Bitcoin within the realm of cloud services highlights the disruptive potential of decentralized infrastructure in challenging centralized models. Just as Bitcoin faced skepticism and scrutiny from established players, Rumble's emergence as a contender in the cloud services arena invites similar attention and scrutiny.

Interesting! There's lot of development openings in web3. Only if developers can recognize the huge opportunities that are available. Gradually, we'll keep having web3 alternatives.

@x9ed1732b ·
Are they not just farming privacy oriented products waiting the right moment to absorb them into their own ecosystem?

If you need something for your mailbox, OneCloud and a personal website, their cloud may be a viable option but I would not build my new ActivityPub compatible publishing platform too dependent on their offerings.
