Space mining just cleared a hurdle this week as Luxembourg passed allowed creating a frame work to allow companies to mine in space.  I appears they want to be the leader's in extraterrestrial mining.

This is something that many entities researched over the past 5 years but received little publicity since it is so far-fetched.  To date, it is still in the Star Trek arena as occupying the minds of those who don't have a solid footing on this planet.  Yet, it is rapidly moving forward to being a viable operation.

Elon Musk's Space X has started to drastically reduce the cost of rocket launches.  Using reusable rockets, he cut the cost from roughly $1M for ULA to $300K.  This price cut obviously makes space travel/exploration more affordable, albeit not cheap.

The allure of space mining operates on many levels.  To start, the wealth of untapped resources on the moon, mars, and asteroids is compelling.  Untold trillions in resources exist just waiting to be tapped into.  Many are well aware of this and are itching to get their hands on it.  

Secondly, we are going to need the ability to mine resources to power space crafts as we start the process of exploring our Solar System (okay, we suddenly crossed from technology to Star Trek).  This will take on added meaning if we eventually start to colonize other planets which many are projecting will happen by the end of this century.

Hang on gang, the next few decades are going to be a wild ride.  There is no telling what we uncover going forward.  We are literally only confined by what the mind can conceive.  Fortunately, we have a lot of really smart people working on some wild stuff.
