I've just read the article linked below and it has blown me away with the details on how much energy is consumed when a Bitcoin transaction takes place. "the average Bitcoin transaction requires 163-kilowatt hours (KWh) of electricity, which is enough to power the average U.S. household for about five and a half days. Whilst some of this electricity will be from a renewable source somewhere along the line, Bitcoin might not be the coin of choice for your environmentalist. I'm no tree hugger, but I would like to at least try and keep out planet in reasonable shape. Since it's profitable, people will continue to do it this way. I feel like there a great market for inexpensive solar panels. If people can affor solar panels, while not reducing their income, problem will be solved.

Solar power would help. It's mad to think you can charge a Tesla on less electricity than it takes for the average Bitcoin transaction.

The metric is a bit skewed. Bitcoin would also function on a few CPUs hashing it all out (on low difficulty of course).

Maybe a little skewed, but I guess the reality of today's mining race. You got to love the crypto world and all the craziness that surrounds it.
