The Hive. HF Why Mana is Used in a Delegation of Steem to Another User
#
*The Hive* After the Hard Fork, Delegation.

Howdy folks'.

After the Hard Fork on the Steem block chain. There seemed to be many questions and lack of information on how things worked. The changing of names seem to be the most visible. Your voting power is now displayed as Mana. Your bandwidth has now been changed to Resource Credits.

How will these changes have an effect on your use of the Steemit platform. Probably none at all, some will take a closer look at their actions and the things they do on the chain. Making better use of the votes they have available to them. Things pretty much work the same as they have done before the Hard Fork.
Carry on pretty much as you have done and you should see little difference.

Below is an image of *The Hive* with the new Mana = VP and the Resource Credits = Bandwidth.

With the exception of having to wait for the Mana to recover after the Hard Fork, I have not found much inconvenience. They do work slightly different to how they worked before. However, a new user to the platform with the 15 delegation will be able to do the same things which a new user could do before the Hard Fork.

What does change is the use of the cost of doing some things. When you delegate your Steem to another member. You use up some of your Resource Credits and some of your Mana power.

**Why is this?**

Let us start with having 100% of Mana your ex VP. This works the same way each time you make a vote it uses up 2% of your remaining Mana. With your Resource Credits your ex Bandwidth. at 100% each time you interact with the block chain you use some of the bandwidth available to the chain. This will reduce at different rates for everyone depending on the level of their Mana. The same as it did previously. There is one Key difference to this that should be noted.

Before the HF, if you had voted down your VP to 50% any additional Steem you powered up. Would gain the voting value of 50%. You were losing 50% of the Steem you powered up. This has been altered in the HF. Now if your voting power has gone low and you power up. The amount you powered up is given at 100% of its voting value. The amount of the increase is proportional to your Mana level, your Steem level and the amount you power up.

If you hold 100 Steem and your Mana is at 50% and you add 100 more Steem powered up. this would bring your Mana to a level of 75%.

Another way to look at it is.
If your vote at 100% Mana is worth 10 cent. At 50% your vote will be worth 05 cent. If you add 100 Steem powered up, your Mana power will increase to 75% and the vote would be worth 15 cent. The equivalent of voting with 100% of 100 and 50% of 100 Steem.

After the HF you are better off each time you power up.

When you delegate your Steem. The same principles remain. To half quote @CrimsonClad here. I may not use the exact words.

> If I use my votes up and drain the Mana to 50%. If I then delegate my Steem to another account. Is it fair the other account gets that delegation to use at 100% and I am still at 50%. The voting power involved had already being used. To delegate Mana you must also have that Mana to delegate now.

Resource Credits are also reduced during this transaction. Resource Credits are based on the Mana an account has available. If the account delegates out a % of its Steem Power, the account will reduce in both Mana and resource credits by that amount. The balance of your Steem power does not change.

The end result of this is Mana power can only be used once until it is replenished.

**Curating Rewards.**
Curating rewards have also changed slightly. Previously if you voted in the first fifteen minutes after a post had been published a greater % of your curating reward would go to the Author. That is no longer the case, now when voting prior to fifteen minutes. The reward for curating the post will go back to the reward pool. The author nor the curator will get a reward during this initial 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes you will get the full reward.

Don't forget to adjust your voting times on Steem auto or other automated voting system. If you want to grow those you vote for, vote after the 15 minutes and gain a slight curating reward. Grow the vote you give too.

A very nice and easy to understand explanation, thank you. Sorry for the half vote, like everyone else still trying to recover mana. Hopefully in a few days all is returned fully to normal.

Appreciate your vote and support. Yea the Mana drop after the HF was a kick in the nuts. A positive upgrade in many ways, the flaws will show in time to be corrected or improved on.
