IBM plans to patent a new system that will use blockchain technology that will end privacy and security concerns for drones. IBM first filed the patent in March 2017, The patent remarks that a blockchain arrangement can provide effective techniques for managing data.

The patent filing insinuates that traffic data could be added “more frequently” as a block to the chain if and when a danger level is considered to be high. In terms of handling privacy concerns, if a drone is outfitted with a high-resolution sensor, for example, the filing states that this could be registered on the blockchain, with additional data transactions added whenever the sensor is detected to be activated.

According to the filing, a shared and stable ledger can enable to multiple parties — which could combine other drones, airspace controllers, regulatory bodies, and so forth — to cooperate as peers in managing risk. Validator nodes within the network could furthermore grant special permissions, using the transparently stored data to verify that a drone has the permission to fly in a particular zone.

The patent further suggests that smart contracts could be utilized to interface the blockchain conformity with extra data generated by machine learning standards or other algorithms that calculate historical data, both on- and off-chain. Such off-chain data could involve, for example, raw video streaming data from the drone’s flight.
