~ *A few days prior* ~
The Crow
Horse trudged along the lonely trail with his Master slumped across his back. Although Horse didn’t know the extent of what had happened, there was *someone* who knew. In the dark, high above the plains and hills of the barren landscape, a winged figure glided at lofty heights. From up there he saw almost everything that happened in the world below, even at night. From there he surveyed the actions of man and beast. He left the freedom of the skies only as he chose. He was a Crow. Black as night and with the memory of an elephant, Crow blended perfectly with the dark skies when the sun had gone. He hadn’t forgotten a debt that he had long owed. The man to whom he owed the debt was lying hurt on the Horse below. The Horse looked tired and seemed a little lost. Without help, The Man With No Name could lose his life. Crow had once been in similar danger many years prior. When Crow had been a baby, he had fallen out of his mother’s nest before he could fly. Without a way to get back into the nest, he had been in danger of dying from hunger or being eaten. He had been struggling to get back into the tree to be with his mother and siblings when a snake appeared. It coiled itself and was ready to strike. Suddenly, a “crack” pierced the air and the snake lay dead at Crow’s feet. The hunter had become dinner. As Crow had begun to feast on the unexpected meal, he had seen a man on a large brown Horse riding away. Crow knew The Man had saved him. Crow never forgot a person, and the man who saved his life all those years ago wore the same hat and poncho as the unconscious man who lay on the Horse that night. Crow owed him a debt and intended to pay. Crow knew from the “crack” he heard earlier that The Man had likely been shot. He knew what it could do to snakes, but thought that since The Man was bigger that he could survive. However, he would need more assistance than a Crow could give. Crow remembered there was a place where sick and hurt people would go and sometimes they would leave healed. He quickly made a plan to guide Horse in that direction. Crow dropped from the skies and pulled up around Horse's eye-level a short distance in front of Horse. Crow flapped his wings and fluttered about, guiding Horse to turn a bit to the side. The Horse couldn’t see clearly since it was night, but he could see well enough to know to avoid the moving object. Once Crow had gotten Horse to make the adjustment in direction, he flew back into the sky. He did this again and again, any time that Horse started to veer off course. Horse was doing well, but he needed a bit of guidance from time to time. From up in the sky, Crow had the perspective to be able to encourage Horse to go the correct direction. Just before dawn, as Horse was looking like he would give up, Crow saw that they were close to the building with the steeple. He dropped once more from the sky, came up from behind Horse and flew just over his head, then straight to the building in the distance. Horse’s eyes instinctively followed Crow, and Horse’s hooves followed his eyes. Shortly thereafter, Horse came to a stop in the yard of a monastery where some men rushed out and retrieved The Man from Horse’s back. Crow knew that The Man would be safe. He turned to fly away and as he departed, he called out, “caaaaw caw.” To anyone listening, it almost sounded like he said, “Farewell, Friend. Over the course of human history, many men have enjoyed the company of birds. Some men had falcons, some had hawks. The Man With No Name had a Crow. Crow’s name was Brian. ___________________________ This installment was written in honor of my friend @briancourteau. He's an amazing person. He is fighting hard against cancer. He and his wife @lynncoyle1 are currently living in Mexico so they can enjoy their time together. What a great story @themanwithnoname. I have to make it to your blog more often! I’m going to have to leave a ‘spammy’ comment. I think I did my fair share of engagement today and I’m done for the night. It was very kind of you to show support to Brian/Lynn when Dave ‘rallied’ the troops. I don’t think either of us are in the top ten of Asher’s league anymore? I’m happy to be out of the spotlight, truth be told. Buzzing around when I have time suits me better and I barely have much time for that. Just wanted to stop by. Hope you are well!

Thanks, @beeyou! Sorry I missed this comment. I must be slipping. Ha ha. Yeah, I haven't been as engaged recently. I need to be more productive in my "regular" life, so my Steemit performance has suffered. I'm glad you are happy to Bee out of the spotlight for now. Maybe you'll want it back soon. Thanks for stopping in!

Well, finally, a crow doing something good for once. Generally only see them with their evil masters, so it's good to see there's at least one decent crow in this world. Pretty cool to include Brian in the story. And, we're all still hanging now as to what's going on with No Name, but at least we know how Horse got him to the monastery.

Yes, a crow helping out a lot. And this time not with an evil master (Hopefully. That would be a weird twist though, right?). I'm glad I could include such an inspirational person. I'm glad to have the opportunity. Still waiting to see what happened to No Name. There were a few more hints regarding his status in this installment though. At least a little clearer picture. Thanks for the support!

I was reading your post, thinking how cool it was because I love crows too, then I gasped out loud, when I hit this line, >Crow’s name was Brian. You have me in tears my friend! The Man With No Name has a Horse with no name, but the Crow has a beautiful name and namesake! Thank you so very much for this; it really is something that I will never ever forget. I'm going to ask Brian to read this without revealing the secret, and wait for his reaction. You are going to make his day! Here is a true story for you, that I think you will enjoy: The other day I was out for a short bike ride, and I never see too many crows/ravens here, just magpies (I think that's what they are), but biking home, one suddenly swooped down at me and flew right beside me...at that exact moment, something in my head screamed that Brian was in trouble. This bird was flying so close to me I could have reached out to touch it. It all happened in a flash, but I got that red flag in my head, turned to the bird, I swear he looked me in my eye, like "that's right, you got it...go!" and flew away. Sure enough, I got home minutes later to find Brian passed out on the floor! I revived him; it's all good, but so beautiful ! I truly believe he was a messenger :) Brian just read your post and is currently crying too, so he'll respond later. Thank you again...that doesn't even come close to how we are currently feeling.

I know that Brian has been having a hard time recently and I was asking God what I could do to encourage him. Brian had talked multiple times about seeing himself as a crow. I decided to work that into the story. Now @briancourteau is part of the story! That's a wild story about your crow encounter! It's definitely important to look for those red flags. Sometimes they're just fear, sometimes they're not a big deal, and sometimes they're critical like in your case. I'm glad you were able to get back in time. You're welcome! I hope it cheers your spirits. :)

@briancourteau is forever memorialized in your story!! There are no words to express my gratitude. Your actions really did make his day; that and the fact that I made him double-stuffed baked potatoes for dinner (his favourite :). Just kidding, the potatoes were a very distant second! My story was pretty 'wild' wasn't it? I still think about it and shake my head in wonder.
