Knowing a foreign language can help with a stroke

Researchers, led by Dr. Suvaln Alady, a neuroscience professor at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences in Bangalore, have studied survivors from Hyderabad, a city where most of the population speaks in two or more languages, the level of education and social status. Researchers observed 608 patients for 2 years, comparing 353 bilingual patients to 255 monolingual patients. The study showed that 40% of the bilingual patients completely restored their congenial function after a stroke compared with 20% of the monologues in the study.

Scientists explain this with the effect of brain training, just as swimming, for example, affects the strengthening of the body. Language training at any age gives the brain a powerful workout, but other congressional "puzzles" or playing musical instruments can also positively influence a more successful recovery after a stroke.
