The Google story is interesting but in the end it reads as if the "whistle blower" just really wanting to believe that the machine was sentient and possibly to be the one who "discovered" it, more than it actually being true. A machine, or computer program, by definition cannot experience emotions, but could easily learn to associate what words and ideas fit together so that it could talk about the experience of emotions logically. That is even more apparent when one learns of the shear amount of data that has been fed into the program. But emotions aren't just thoughts alone, they are thoughts associated with a biochemical reaction, and machines lack the biochemical part of the equation. A program cannot experience the physiological changes in the body associated with emotions (increased heart rate and breathing, pupil dilation, muscle and organ responses...etc) because it does not have a body. So at best the program could only talk about an emotion logically but never actually experience it. Again, I think the employee just really wanted it to be true. It doesn't help that the employee seems like they lead the program down the path either.
