Escape From Mogadishu is a movie that wasn’t just made for the sake of making a movie but rather tells about what African people suffer and also educates on how embassies of countries operate. This movie is a Korean production released in 2021 and was shot in Somalia and Kenya.
The movie tells about two nations , North Korea and South Korea, whose embassies in Somalia were having some glitches in their efforts to establish better ground in the country. They were working on it, moving from one office to another in the city of Mogadishu, when a riot broke out. It was a rebellious one, and the rebels wanted the president of Somalia to step down. The rebels were heavily armed, carrying massive ammunition and shooting down anyone standing in their way.
The North Korean and South Korean embassies had to put aside their differences to find a means of escaping Mogadishu, the state capital of Somalia. Unfortunately, the police who were guarding them ran away, leaving them to defend themselves against the rebels. In addition, their communication network was cut off, and there was no way to reach out to their home country, Korea.
It was a very deadly survival run for them as they tried to escape in the midst of flying bullets aimed at them. The rebels were so rugged that even their 10-year-old boys had guns and were shooting with precision. What a movie!

The movie is an interesting one, not just because of the fighting scenes but also because of the connections and blending of everything, the African English, the Koreans forcing themselves to speak English, the portrayal of African lifestyles, especially with how they jokingly mocked the poor network connection in Africa when making calls, and most importantly, how they used real facilities to shoot the movie.
However, the movie has poor video quality; one may liken it to a film from the 90s, even though it was released in 2021. Perhaps that was intentional because the movie depicts the early days of life, where old Mercedes Benz cars were still in use. The movie has all the elements of the olden days, and I understand their choice of making the video appear that way.
It’s a good movie, and I will rate it 8/10.
