It is not from today, nor from yesterday that I consider Jupiter Apple/Flávio Basso one of the most incredible figures in Brazil. A lysergic fruit of his generation, a mind fried by existence itself, beaten in a blender of musical strands and the most varied influences of pop culture. This is not even my first text about him. But recently I found some material that I was not expecting. By chance I was watching an interview with Rogério Skylab (another incredible figure who deserves a LOT of attention) where he commented on the fateful and historical interview he did with Flávio Basso (the Jupiter), an interview that became a kind of dark, existentialist and unique tragicomedy in "modern media entertainment". The interview had become famous in its edited version (which even edited was incredibly absurd, dadaistic, bitter, sad, beautiful and unique) but now it was finally released in the great Rogério Skylab's own youtube channel the integral version of almost ONE HOUR of this interview. The raw material, which as Skylab himself describes in the description, can (and should) be absorbed and contemplated like a medium-length art film.

The empty spaces take over the interview almost completely, Skylab with a kind of intelligent and incredibly psychopathic respect manages to remain resistant to the discomfort of watching the interviewee who wavers between disconnected sentences and complex narrations that wander through mental landscapes that border on the surreal. The impression is that Jupiter almost always runs away from explanations or logical answers. This happens to fit perfectly with the talk-show project Skylab had built. It is not possible to know if this escape is on purpose or if it is caused by the devastating situation that his mental health and physical weakness present at that moment. It seems that Flavio Basso had just come out of rehabilitation at that time and was clearly weak (since literally one of his first actions on camera was to take a sip of the whiskey he had ordered for the show's production), who knows what else was going on in his body, maybe high doses of benzodiazepines and other drugs to cut down on the side effects of alcohol withdrawal? Maybe he was doped up on opiates? What is known is that at some point he fires off that classic line of a suffering addict: "I hate alcohol. I don't wish it on anyone.

Jupiter doesn't answer so much that I, as a fan would like to know about the probable "greatest album of the national psychedelic music" that is the "Sétima Efervescência", nor of his incredible experimentalist album called "Hisscivilization" or yet the Tarde no Fruteira, which had international reach, always reverberating and oscillating between lucidity and blackouts in the middle of the interview, until he ends up literally sleeping before a fateful question regarding his "possible" suicide attempt. And Skylab, impassive, silent, lets him sleep as the minutes tick by. There is definitely nothing happy about this cut of the life of someone who was for me one of the greatest stars and composers in pop culture, it is very sad, but the comedy that exists in the tragedy of a caricatured and eternally hallucinated being like Jupiter Apple is unbreakable, it is present forever, not only in the reveries polluted by addiction and abstinence present in this moment of his career, but in each track, in each lyric, and each rich and lysergic melodic construction that extends through all his musical phases. I could go on praising this dual and absurd figure for hours even knowing all his rottenness and sins, even knowing that he is just another one of us full of problems and finally, that I already know it was, arising exactly from his actions, but I end here, sharing at last, Rogério Skylab's 54-minute interview with Flávio Basso, the eternal Jupiter Apple. Não é de hoje, nem de ontem que eu considero Jupiter Maçã/Jupiter Apple/Flávio Basso uma das figuras mais incríveis do Brasil. Um fruto lisérgico de sua geração, uma mente fritada pela existência em si, batida em um liquidificador de vertentes musicais e de influências das mais variadas da cultura pop. Nem é meu primeiro texto sobre ele, inclusive. Mas recentemente acabei encontrando um material que eu não esperava. Por acaso estava assistindo uma entrevista com Rogério Skylab (outra figura incrível que merece MUITA atenção) onde ele comentava da fatídica e histórica entrevista que ele fez com Flávio Basso (O Jupiter), entrevista essa que tornou-se uma espécie de tragicomédia obscura, existencialista e única no "entretenimento midiático moderno". A entrevista havia se tornado famosa em sua versão editada (que mesmo editada era incrivelmente absurda, dadaísta, amarga, triste, bela e única) mas agora foi enfim lançada no próprio canal de youtube do grande Rogério Skylab a versão integral de quase UMA HORA dessa entrevista. O material bruto, que tal como descreve o próprio Skylab na descrição, pode (e deve) ser absorvida e contemplada como um filme de arte de média metragem.

Os espaços vazios tomam conta da entrevista quase que completamente, Skylab com uma espécie de respeito inteligente e incrivelmente psicopático consegue manter-se resistente ao desconforto de observar o entrevistado que titubeia entre frases desconexas e narrações complexas que passeiam por paisagens mentais que beiram o surreal. A impressão é que quase sempre Jupiter foge das explicações ou de respostas lógicas. Isso por acaso cai perfeitamente no projeto do talk-show que Skylab havia construído. Não é possível saber se essa fuga se dá propositalmente ou se é causada pela devastadora situação que sua saúde mental e debilidade física apresentam naquele momento. Ao que tudo indica Flávio Basso acabara de sair de uma re-habilitação naquela época e claramente fraquejava (dado que literalmente uma das primeiras ações executadas diante das câmeras foi virar num gole só uma dose de whisky que pedira para a produção do programa), sabe-se lá o que mais acontecia em seu corpo, talvez doses altas de benzodiazepínicos e outros medicamentos para cortar os colaterais da abstinência do álcool? Quem sabe estava dopado de opiáceos? O que se sabe é que em algum momento ele dispara aquela frase clássica de um dependente em sofrimento: -Eu odeio o álcool. Eu não desejo isso para ninguém.

Jupiter não responde tanto que eu, como fã gostaria de saber sobre o provável "maior álbum da música psicodélica nacional" que é o Sétima Efervescência, nem do seu incrível album experimentalíssimo chamado "Hisscivilization" ou ainda o Tarde no Fruteira, que teve alcance internacional, sempre devaneando e oscilando entre a lucidez e os apagões no meio da entrevista, até que acaba por literalmente dormir diante de uma fatídica pergunta a respeito de sua "possível" tentativa de suicídio. E Skylab, impassível, em silêncio, deixa-o dormir enquanto os minutos correm. Definitivamente esse recorte da vida de alguém que foi para mim um dos maiores astros e compositores da cultura pop não tem nada de feliz, é algo muito triste, mas a comédia que existe na tragédia de um ser caricato e eternamente alucinado como Jupiter Maçã é inquebrável, está presente para sempre, não apenas nos devaneios poluídos pela dependência e abstinência presentes nesse momento de sua carreira, mas em cada faixa, em cada letra, e cada construção melódica riquíssima e lisérgica que estende-se por todas suas fases musicais. Eu poderia ficar elogiando essa figura dual e absurda por horas mesmo sabendo de toda sua podridão e pecados, mesmo sabendo que é só mais um de nós cheio de problemas e por fim, que já sei foi, decorrente exatamente de suas ações, mas termino por aqui, compartilhando enfim, a entrevista de 54 minutos de Rogério Skylab com Flávio Basso, o eterno Jupiter Apple.
