https://s9.postimg.org/u3y9ri7gv/identity_disorder_388873_640.jpg

Steemit rewards it’s curators for having up voted things that will become popular. This essentially turns every potential post into a stock to either be investing an upvote in, or ignoring outright. If you are on Steemit to earn that’s perfectly fine and well. However, by upvoting content that you are genuinely not interested in, simply because of the fact that you believe that the community will upvote the post – then you’re not only doing yourself a disservice, but also the entire Steemit community. This is because the uninteresting content that you upvote will take up valuable Steemit real estate.

Whereas, if the collective of intelligent voters, were to upvote only the things they really resonated with, found edifying, or entertaining, then it would inspire others to resort to the type of raw creativity that people really appreciate. The top stories on Steemit would suddenly become highly interesting. The community would compete with itself in ways we might not even be able to comprehend yet. The cream as they say, it will rise to the top.

I’m fairly new to the Steemit community, I’ve tried being a curator and upvoting things that I think will become popular, but it’s not sitting well with me. I’d rather get substantially less Steem by not encouraging content that I don’t care for, then to follow the mob by upvoting things based on any given user’s track record of so called ‘popular’ posts.

One other thing that may be highly beneficial, not for gaining Steem but in support of the quality of the platform’s content is to be stingy with your votes. I’ve read that it’s optimal to vote 20 times a day. Somehow this magical number does something for your Steem. I think this is stupid, and it’s Steemit's problem to fix. I don’t want to be cajoled by the system's algorithm into voting twenty times a day just to sit around for hours on end waiting to find stuff that I like. I’ll take my time and read things at my leisure, upvote them as I see fit. Maybe I’ll go for long periods of time without upvoting a single thing. Or maybe I’ll upvote five things on any given day.

Point being is, no matter what the system is, or how much you are captured by it. Bear in mind these things have a tendency to alter your personality without you even knowing it. I know there are allot of Steemians reading this who game it well, thinking that what I am saying is blasphemy of the highest order. To those folks, I challenge them to watch an episode on season three of ‘Black Mirror’ entitled ‘Nosedive’.

https://www.netflix.com/watch/80104627

If you can watch that without reflecting on the possibility that you may be doing it all wrong, then I will concede you victory and wish you well in your continuance to game up as much Steem as possible until your heart is content, but that won’t improve the content of Steem. Ultimately, the quality of your votes directly affects the quality of the content on the platform. If we can get as many people as mindful of this as possible, I think we can collectively have a huge impact on the content we see.

A more simple way of thinking about it is to imagine that Steemit is Netflix. If you pretend that you are a Netflix curator, and your vote helps to determine which original programming Netflix will be purchasing. The logical conclusion, if you are a paying customer is to vote for the content that you enjoy the most. If you don’t do this, you’ll be destroying the product that you have come to love so much. Thinking about the end result as opposed to the bottom line, will really add quite a bit of steam to Steemit.

Thank you for posting @thoughts-in-time. It would be nice to think that this sort of critical thinking is the conclusion most would would come to. It is a surrending of one's volition which is very subtle accompanied by loss of capacity for life. Thank you for your expression of thought that we may think on these things.

I do agree. The rewards are quite modest anyway, and if you are really going to be that calculating then you need to get a life. Just like what you like, and regard any payment as a bonus.

Thanks for your comment, if Steemit is going to payout to those being calculating, then it would be in their best interest to tweak their algorithms a bit for the good of the platform. Hopefully in this tweaking, they wouldn’t break it irreparably. I don’t think that strategic curators don’t have a life, but rather found a sneaky way to make a living. Through reciprocal upvoting, or whatever they are doing, maybe relying upon the simple mindedness of the crowd to hijack their votes in favor of content they normally would not consume. Long story short, holding the black mirror up to their face, may quite possibly allow them to see the consequences of abandoning ones will.

Thanks for your comment, if you get a chance check out that Netflix video. It's pretty entertaining, and also mind blowing. It really does cause some startling reflections for any social media user.
