*"My Girl" is a song written in 1964 by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, two members of The Miracles, in honor of Smokey's wife, Claudette Rogers. The song, written by The Temptations and featuring lead vocals by David Ruffin, was released as a single on December 21, 1964 (the B-side included "(Talking 'bout) Nothing But My Baby"). It reached number one on the Billboard pop chart on March 6, 1965 (same position on the R&B chart). It was the Temptations' first number one and one of the biggest hits in Motown history.*

*Two years earlier, with Otis Redding (Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul album, July 1965) and The Mamas & the Papas (Deliver album, 1967), the Stones recorded a version of "My Girl." It was probably during a session conducted by engineer Dave Hassinger at the RCA studios in Hollywood on May 12 and 13, 1965. This version by the London band, slightly faster than the original, is well done, although it follows too closely the orchestral arrangement of The Temptations. The stones may seem stuck for a while, but they never come loose. Mick Jagger is not David Ruffin and seems uncomfortable with high notes (0:43).*

*Singers can play percussion or harpsichord instruments using intense reverb. Brian Jones plays rhythm guitar (Firebird?) and Keith probably plays the main Les Paul riff. Keith also sounds like he's playing a second rhythm guitar, using distortion and vibration (starting at 1:27). Bill Wyman begins “My Girl,” playing an unmistakably powerful Framus Star bass plugged into a Vox amp. generally. Charlie Watts delivers a great beat that may be too close to the original. You can even hear the piano (Jack Nietzsche?). Bill Wyman recorded sessions between August 31 and September 2, 1966, when Mick, Keith and Oldham returned to London to record trumpets for Rolling with the Stones' "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing Up." Mike Rinder Orchestra at IBC Studios. So it was undoubtedly Leander who sang "My Girl." Final mixing took place on September 8 at RCA Studios in Hollywood.*
