This year, the first crop we planted in the garden was onions. Naturally, they were the first we harvested. We planted them about three months ago. The onion harvest is almost complete. Onions prefer cool weather and water. They don't produce well in hot weather. Otherwise, we'll plant turnips in the same spot we planted onions. Turnip planting time coincides precisely with this time. They're most productive when the initial planting period is a bit warmer and then the temperatures drop. I'll talk about turnip planting in my next garden post.

We planted onions in an area of approximately 5 square meters. We planted them entirely for home consumption. When the onion matures, its green leaves are quite delicious. They're also very beneficial for the body. The smell is a bit strong, but it's worth it.

During harvest, onion leaves become very tough and brittle. This makes them unusable. We sort the leaves and throw them away. We can also feed them to cows, but because onions have such a strong odor, they alter the taste and smell of the milk.

What's important to us right now is the onion root. The roots haven't grown enough. Farmers who prioritize the roots delay harvesting a bit longer. Then, during the ripening period, they cut off the leaves so the plant can focus all its energy on the roots. Depending on the situation, farmers may employ different strategies.

We're currently drying our harvested onions in the sun. Undried onions are at risk of rotting later in life. We harvested approximately 8 kilograms of onions. After drying, they'll drop to 5-6 kilograms. We'll be buying more for winter use. We use them in many of our dishes. I was planning to plant garlic this year, but the opportunity never came. Garlic is just as beneficial as onions.
