The term "finance" is synonymous with "money" but it implies more than just money. It speaks volume about raising, holding, using or transferring of money (fund) by economic units in the process of attempting to satisfy chosen needs and wants. 

Finance may therefore be said to be a part of business studies which considers the monetary impact of economic decisions of individuals and organizations.  

More so, finance is a functional term suggesting action with money and it assumes a central position in economic problem solving and serves as a guide to corporate investment decisions. 

Finance cuts across every area of life and no one can do without it. As a field of study, finance can be divided into personal finance, public finance and business finance. 

When we talk of personal finance, it is concerned with the raising, earning, managing and using of money by persons. If you do not manage or utilize your funds adequately, chances of experiencing bankruptcy is certain.

The individual's financial interest and goal is to maximize well-being by appropriately using funds available to him. Furthermore, the available funds may be invested on real or financial assets or spent on consumer goods as the case may be. 

Speaking of business finance, it concerns itself with the effective and efficient raising and utilization of funds by business organizations or entrepreneurs. While public finance relates to the income and expenditure activities of government at various levels.
