I was born in Abidjan in CÎte d'Ivoire, in Adjamé*, it is a popular district on April 6, 1965. It is one of the biggest districts of Abidjan in Djamé, when you say Djamé it is really the commercial district. Everything that is commercial happens there.

I went to kindergarten, then primary school, then middle school and then I went to professional courses. In the professional course, I chose accounting. When I got the equivalent of the BEP in accounting I came here to Belgium to continue in 1986, so I was 21 years old when I arrived here.

While I was in France, I went around Paris a bit, where I arrived in Trois. There, we were a big community of Ivorians. It was very nice at first, but we did a lot of stupid things together. For example, we used to play soccer and it always ended up in a fight, a bit like what we used to do back home when we were bored, so I didn't like it and I thought it would be better if I didn't stay there, otherwise I would end up in trouble. It was better to leave the group and I set off again to join my brother as soon as possible so as not to waste my time.

Alors que jâĂ©tais en France jâai fait un peu le tour de Paris, oĂč je suis arrivĂ© Ă Trois. LĂ , on Ă©tait une grosse communautĂ© dâivoiriens. CâĂ©tait trĂšs chouette au dĂ©but, mais on faisait pas mal de bĂȘtises tous ensemble. Par exemple, on jouait au foot et ça finissait toujours par la bagarre, un peu comme on faisait au pays quand on s'ennuie, donc ça ne mâa pas plus et je me suis dit quâil vallait mieux que je ne reste pas lĂ sinon jâallais finir par tourner mal. Il valait mieux quitter le groupe et je me suis remis en route pour rejoindre mon frĂšre au plus vite pour ne pas perdre mon temps.

In Belgium there was my older brother, I enrolled at ISTE which is now in Uccles, but was before in Madou. There I did a degree in accounting. There, while I am a student and I come from a modest family, I saw my father sending me money and I had to tell him no daddy don't send me any more money because we are 7 in our family. I'm the third, there are others who will need your help, take care of the little ones, I don't need it. That's how I found the motivation to start working with my brother who was also studying. At that time we were renovating buildings with my sister-in-law, my brother and I at the Bourse in Brussels we renovated a building, a Chinese restaurant. At that time I worked a lot in the restaurant business, I used to go every Saturday and Sunday, when I wasn't going to school, to wash the kitchens of the Chinese restaurants, that's how I was able to buy my first car. And thanks to that, instead of doing only one restaurant a day, I could do more because I could move around more easily.

En Belgique il y avait mon frĂšre aĂźnĂ©, je me suis inscrit Ă lâISTE qui est maintenant Ă Uccles, mais qui Ă©tait avant Ă Madou. LĂ jâai fait un graduat en comptabilitĂ©. LĂ , alors que je suis Ă©tudiant et que je suis issu dâune famille modeste, jâai vu mon pĂšre mâenvoyer de lâargent jâai dĂ» lui dire non papa ne mâenvois plus dâargent parce quâon est 7 dans notre famille. Moi je suis le troisiĂšme, il y en a encore d'autres qui vont avoir besoin de ton aide, occupe toi des plus petits moi ce nâest pas la peine. Câest comme ça que jâai trouvĂ© la motivation pour commencer Ă travailler avec mon frĂšre qui Ă©tudiait aussi. A cette Ă©poque lĂ on rĂ©novait les bĂątiments avec ma belle soeur, mon frĂšre et moi Ă la Bourse Ă Bruxelles on a rĂ©nover un bĂątiment, un restaurant chinois. A cette Ă©poque jâai beaucoup travaillĂ© dans le domaine de la restauration, jâallais tous les samedis et les dimanches, quand je nâallais pas Ă l'Ă©cole jâallais laver les cuisines des restaurants chinois, câest comme ça que jâai pu acheter ma premiĂšre voiture. Et lĂ grĂące à ça, au lieu de ne faire quâun restaurant par jour, jâai pu en faire plus car je pouvais me dĂ©placer plus facilement.

At the post office I worked as a letter carrier, I stayed one year and I said no, I can't do only that. So I went back to a store in Schaerbeek, <a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenue_Gustave_Latinis">Gustave Latinis</a> 45, there I stayed for 10 years, at the same time I was at the post office too. My wife ran the store while I went to the post office. Around 2 pm I came back and I worked in the store until closing time. So we were there for 10 years.

Donc je suis retournĂ© dans un magasin Ă Schaerbeek, <a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenue_Gustave_Latinis">Gustave Latinis</a> 45, lĂ je suis restĂ© 10 ans, en mĂȘme temps jâĂ©tais Ă la poste aussi. Ma femme tenait le magasin pendant que moi jâallais Ă la poste. Vers 14h je revenais et je travaillais au magasin jusquâĂ la fermeture. Donc on ets restĂ© lĂ 10 ans.

In 2017 I sold this store and I decided to return to CĂŽte D'Ivoire. There I stayed 3 years in the country to work in the construction. I came back to Belgium in 2019 where I did a little uber cab and I didn't like it so I said to myself that I would take back what I know. So I searched and found this place where I am today that had been closed for a year or so (10 months at least). That's how I got started when I took over here. So I have almost 20 years of self-employment under my belt. This experience helped me a lot to launch Tongo-Market, Tongo-Logistic and a series of brands in the field of travel, wellness, utilities for comfort, family and home, in the luxury sector (selection of watches and jewelry) and the web with our new project Tongo Digital. But above all it allowed me to initiate a project that is particularly close to my heart and which is the real reason of my presence here. While traveling I saw how lucky I was and how many opportunities I had, but this is not the case for everyone.

En 2017 jâai vendu ce magasin et jâai dĂ©cidĂ© de rentrer en CĂŽte D'ivoire. LĂ je suis restĂ© 3 ans au pays travailler dans le bĂątiment. Je suis revenu vers 2019 en Belgique oĂč jâai fait un peu le Taxi uber et ça ne me plaisait pas alors je me suis dit que j'allais reprendre ce que je connais. Jâai donc cherchĂ© et trouvĂ© ce local oĂč je suis aujourdâhui qui Ă©tait fermĂ© depuis une annĂ©e ou presque (10 mois au moins). Câest comme ça que je me suis lancĂ© quand jâai repris ici. Donc jâaccumule quasiment 20 ans de vie dâindĂ©pendant. Cette expĂ©rience mâa beaucoup aidĂ© pour lancer Tongo-Market, Tongo-Logistic ainsi quâune sĂ©rie de marques dans le domaine du voyage, du bien ĂȘtre, des utilitaires pour le confort, la famille et la maison, dans le secteur du luxe (SĂ©lection de montres et bijoux) et du web avec notre nouveau projet Tongo Digital. Mais surtout ça mâa permis dâinitier un projet qui me tient particuliĂšrement Ă cĆur et qui est la vrai raison de ma prĂ©sence ici. En voyageant jâai vu Ă quel point j'ai eu beaucoup de la chance et des opportunitĂ©s, mais ce nâest pas le cas de tout le monde.

C'Ă©tait un ami, mais bon malheureusement il a Ă©tĂ© dans des milieux durs, sinon il avait une bonne bonne place il gagnait beaucoup dâargent dan cette boite de nuit, mais voilĂ , malheureusement il sâest lancĂ© dans des consommations excessives et ça vraiment, jâai du prendre mes distances avec lui alors que câĂ©tait lâun de mes meilleurs amis.

Otherwise he was in very, very good circles, a bourgeois circle in Flanders, he took me sometimes to people's houses, they were party people from the first to the 31st, so I said to myself, well, this is not my life, these are people who have the means to lead this life and who have nothing else to do or don't need to do anything and so I left. I don't have those means, if I started like that it would have been just to go into debt and stay in that type of environment if tomorrow you have a problem there is no one there. So it was better for me to go back to my own way, otherwise this environment was very interesting in many ways, but when you saw their cars at 18 or 25 years old, they were branded coupes. When we came out of this type of event after a night of work we got huge tips, it was crazy.

Dans ce type de milieux, si vous consommez, ça ne dure jamais, ça ne peut pas durer, câest la santĂ© qui ne le permettra pas avant tout le reste. Câest ça qui a coulĂ© Jimmy, il est venu ici et ne mâa pas reconnu, je sais je me rĂ©pĂšte, mais imaginez un ami de toujours qui ne vous reconnait pas ça vous marque. Il est venu il mâa regardĂ© et mâa achetĂ© un paquet de cigarettes et il ne mâa rien dit pas de âSalut mon frĂšre, comment ça va depuis tout ce tempsâ, il a juste pris les cigarettes, ne mâa pas laissĂ© le temps de dire quoi que ce soit et est parti. Si je lui avais dit hĂ© Jimmy mais tu te rappels, il nâallait plus me lĂącher donc ce nâest peut-ĂȘtre pas plus mal car il a eu pas mal dâhistoire avec la police, câest choses lĂ tĂŽt ou tard⊠on en sort rarement indemne. Sinon il frĂ©quentait de trĂšs trĂšs bon milieux, un milieu bourgeois en Flandre, il mâamenait des fois chez des personnes, câĂ©tait des fĂȘtards du premier au 31, bon je me suis dit bon moi câest pas ma vie tout ça, ce sont des gens qui ont les moyens de mener cette vie et qui nâont rien dâautre Ă faire ou nâon pas besoin de faire quoi que ce soit et donc je suis parti. Je nâai pas ces moyens, si je commençais comme ça cela aurait Ă©tĂ© juste pour mâendetter et rester dans ce type dâenvironnement si demain tu a un problĂšme il nây a personne qui est lĂ . Il valait donc mieux pour moi de reprendre ma route sinon ce milieu Ă©tait trĂšs intĂ©ressant Ă plus dâun point mais quand tu voyais leurs bagnoles Ă 18 ou 25 ans câĂ©tait des coupĂ©s de marque. Quand on sortait de ce type dâĂ©vĂ©nement aprĂšs une soirĂ©e Ă travailler on avait des pourboires Ă©normes, c'Ă©tait fou.

It was with a friend who was also at the small stopper, he was a dishwasher and I was a clerk and at one point he was with a Pakistani who was fed up, may he rest in peace (he passed away today), he was fed up with the store. What I'm talking about dates back to 1995, he said to him "Germain, this is what you would like, I have a store for sale on rue du Bailli near Avenue Louise Afrimark, the store is still there today". And that's how Germain took this store and when I saw Germain good have such a success, he had stopped the dishwasher where we were and he really started to evolve and I said to him listen Germain, well I would like to do like you. He told me to come whenever you want and so I went there on Saturday evenings and Sundays, sometimes even with my oldest who was still in his stroller at the time and whom I took with me. That was in 2000, maybe a year before I opened my store. And that's how I saw how Germain did things, how he welcomed people, how he behaved with customers and I said to myself, this is completely different from the way we do business in Africa.

Sinon au niveau en dehors de ma formation, je suis dâune lignĂ©e qui dans ma communautĂ© est connue pour ĂȘtre des commerçants, mĂȘme si on fait des Ă©tudes et ce genre de chose, Ă la base dĂ©jĂ ma mĂšre faisait dĂ©jĂ son petit commerce, mon pĂšre il Ă©tait chaudronnier, câest Ă dire rĂ©parateur de bĂąteaux dans une grande compagnie Française, mais le soir il avait sa petite boutique au quartier, donc il finissait son truc, il venait il gĂ©rait sa boutique jusqu'Ă la fermeture jusqu'Ă 22h par exemple, donc si tu veux on est un peu commerçant dans lâĂąme, mais pour ĂȘtre honnĂȘte, ici le commerce avec les EuropĂ©ens, câest ici que je lâai appris, parce que en CĂŽte dâIvoire le commerçant tu vas rentrer, il ne va pas te sourire, il nây a pas d'accueil de bonjour et de ce genre de choses, mais ici ça compte. Câest avec un ami qui Ă©tait aussi au petit bouchon, lui il Ă©tait plongeur et moi jâĂ©tais commis et arrivĂ© Ă un moment lui il cĂŽtoyait un Pakistanais qui en avait marre, paix Ă son Ăąme (il est dĂ©cĂ©dĂ© aujourdâhui), il en avait marre du magasin. Ce dont je vous parle date de 1995, il lui a dit voilĂ Germain est ce que tu voudrais bien, jâai un magasin Ă vendre rue du bailli prĂšs de lâavenue Louise Afrimark, le magasin est toujours lĂ aujourdâhui dâailleurs. Et câest comme ça que Germain a pris ce magasin et quand jâai vu Germain bon avoir un tel succĂšs, il avait arrĂȘtĂ© la plonge oĂč on Ă©tait et il a commencĂ© vraiment Ă Ă©voluer et moi je lui ai dit Ă©coutes Germain, bon moi jâaimerais faire comme toi. Il mâa dit viens quand tu veux et donc jâallais lĂ bas le Samedi soir et les dimanches, parfois mĂȘme avec mon plus grand qui Ă©tait Ă ce moment encore dans sa poussette et que je prenais avec moi. Ca c'Ă©tait en 2000, peut ĂȘtre un an avant que jâouvre mon magasin. Et câest comme ça que jâai vu comment faisait Germain, comment il accueillait les gens, comment il se comportait avec la clientĂšle et je me suis dit mais câest complĂštement diffĂ©rent de la maniĂšre dont nous on fait le commerce en Afrique.

I worked with him for about a year, but I told him I don't need to, no no no, I want to learn, that's all, and we bought, I remember very well, he sent me to get some bones at the local restaurant, and at that time there weren't really these rules of closure like there are now, well it always existed but at the time it was never respected and yet there was a police office a few hundred meters away almost right across the street, but they didn't care, we did day shop and night shop, we did the videos, there was for adults downstairs and for the public upstairs, it was a very nice and interesting place to do that So I helped him as a volunteer to learn and after that I looked in the newspaper Vlan and that's how I found the place. A couple, a French man and his wife who were fed up, they were retiring, and they sold it to me for I think at the time it was 12,000 Belgian Francs at the time it was a handful that didn't represent much.

Tu vois en Afrique tu es lĂ , le type le fait plus par besoin, c'est -Ă -dire il vient il achĂšte parce quâil est dans le besoin mais ici les gens ont le choix. Voila donc si il nây a pas cet accueil le client il va voir ailleurs. Avec Germain jâai vraiment appris ça et attention il ne me payait pas, je ne voulais pas, ce que je souhaitais câĂ©tait apprendre. Jâai travaillĂ© avec lui un an environ, mais je lui ai dit je nâai pas besoin, non non non, je veux apprendre câest tout et on achetait je me rappel trĂšs bien, il m'envoyait en allant chercher des petits os au restaurant du coin et Ă ce moment il nây avait pas vraiment ces rĂšgles de fermeture comme il y a maintenant, enfin ça a toujours existĂ© mais bon ce nâĂ©tait Ă lâĂ©poque jamais respectĂ© et pourtant il y avait un bureau de Police Ă quelques centaines de mĂštres quasi juste en face, mais ils s'en foutaient, on faisait day shop et night shop, on faisait les vidĂ©os, il y avait pour les adultes en bas et pour le tout publique en haut, câĂ©tait un trĂšs beau coin et trĂšs intĂ©ressant pour faire ça. Donc je lâai aidĂ© bĂ©nĂ©volement pour apprendre et aprĂšs ça jâai regardĂ© dans le journal Vlan et câest comme ça que jâai trouvĂ© le local. Un couple, un homme Français et sa femme qui en avaient marre, ils prenaient leur retraite, et il mâont vendu ça pour je crois Ă lâĂ©poque câĂ©tait 12 000 Francs Belge Ă lâĂ©poque câĂ©tait une poignĂ©e ça ne reprĂ©sentait pas grand chose.

There was more and more migration in the neighborhood and it was going up more and more towards the park and so there were more and more young people hanging out in the streets and it was no longer for this couple who had already done their time there, they already had their house, they just wanted to retire and so I was very lucky. They sold it to me for a pittance and I re-launched that store, I stayed for five years. I got there because Germain gave me a helping hand, I didn't have enough money and Germain had already started to be a half wholesaler, so what he did, he supplied me and I paid him on Sunday, so he allowed me to really have a working capital and everything that is necessary to start without taking too much risk. When Germain started selling cigarettes, he started having problems with communities and then it started to go wrong, I'll skip the details but in the end I found myself in a delicate situation, but as he was someone who had done me a favor, I wanted to return the favor. At one point it went to court, but fortunately I was totally cleared because I had nothing to do with it and the court quickly understood. I have had some extraordinary stories in my life and I will be very happy to tell you more about them in my next publications.

Il y avait de plus en plus de migration dans le quartier et ça remontait de plus en plus vers le parc et donc il y avait de plus en plus de jeunes qui traĂźnaient dans les rues et ce nâĂ©tait plus pour ce couple qui avait dĂ©jĂ fait son temps lĂ , ils avaient dĂ©jĂ leur maison, ils voulaient juste partir en retraite et donc jâai eu beaucoup de chance. Ils mâont vendu ça pour une bouchĂ©e de pain et j'ai relancĂ© ce magasin, je suis restĂ© cinq ans. Je suis arrivĂ© lĂ en fait parce que Germain mâa donnĂ© un coup de pouce, câest Ă dire que moi je nâavais pas assez de moyens et donc Germain il avait dĂ©jĂ commencĂ© Ă ĂȘtre demi grossiste, donc quâest ce quâil faisait, il me fournissait et je le payais le dimanche, donc il mâa permis de vraiment avoir un fond de roulement et tout ce qui est nĂ©cessaire pour dĂ©marrer sans prendre trop de risques. Quand Germain a commencĂ© Ă vendre les cigarettes, il a commencĂ© Ă avoir des problĂšmes avec des communautĂ©s et là ça a commencĂ© Ă mal tourner, je vous passe les dĂ©tails mais en fin de compte je me suis retrouvĂ© dans une situation dĂ©licate, mais comme câĂ©tait quelquâun qui mâavait rendu service, je voulais lui rendre l'ascenseur. A un moment câest passĂ© au tribunal, mais heureusement jâai Ă©tĂ© totalement blanchi car je nâavais rien Ă voir dans cette affaire et le tribunal a vite compris. Jâai eu dans mon parcours donc des histoires assez extraordinaires et je serai trĂšs heureux de vous en raconter davantage dans mes prochaines publications.

When I travel, I usually go to an orphanage that is run by good friends. During one of these visits, I met a little girl who was born without a hole to defecate, I could not help but be sensitive to her situation and that of her family who could not afford the operation necessary for the well-being and health of this little child, This is why I am also setting up a non-profit organization where I have already gathered the shopkeepers of my neighborhood who participate in a kitty that allows to support this type of reality but also to provide a Christmas and vacations to underprivileged and or abandoned children.

Lors de mes voyages, je vais habituellement dans un orphelinat qui est dirigĂ© par de bons amis. Durant lâun de ces sĂ©jour et dâune de ces visites, jâai fait la connaissance dâune petite fille qui est nĂ©e sans orifice pour dĂ©fĂ©quer, je nâai pas pu mâempĂȘcher d'ĂȘtre sensible Ă sa situation et celle de sa famille qui nâavait pas les moyens de prendre en charge lâopĂ©ration nĂ©cessaire au bien ĂȘtre et la santĂ© de ce petit enfant, câest pourquoi je monte Ă©galement une organisation Ă but non lucratif oĂč jâai dĂ©jĂ rĂ©uni les commerçants de mon quartier qui participent Ă une cagnotte qui permet de supporter ce type de rĂ©alitĂ© mais aussi de fournir un Noel et des vacances Ă des enfants dĂ©favorisĂ©s et ou abandonnĂ©s.
