I was born in Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire, in Adjamé*, it is a popular district on April 6, 1965. It is one of the biggest districts of Abidjan in Djamé, when you say Djamé it is really the commercial district. Everything that is commercial happens there.

Moi je suis né à Abidjan en Côte d’Ivoire, à Adjamé*, c’est un quartier populaire le 6 avril 1965. C’est l’un des plus grands quartiers d’Abidjan à Djamé, quand tu dis Djamé c’est vraiment le quartier du commerce. Tout ce qui est commercial, ça se passe là-bas.

I went to kindergarten, then primary school, then middle school and then I went to professional courses. In the professional course, I chose accounting. When I got the equivalent of the BEP in accounting I came here to Belgium to continue in 1986, so I was 21 years old when I arrived here.

J’ai fait la maternelle, après les primaires, ensuite le collège et après je suis passé en cours professionnels. Dans le professionnel, j’ai choisi la comptabilité. Quand j’ai eu l’équivalent du BEP en comptabilité je suis venu ici en Belgique pour continuer en 1986, donc j’avais 21 ans quand je suis arrivé ici.

To get to Belgium I went through France, because the Ivory Coast and France are closer and I had the opportunity to cross this beautiful country. I then arrived in Belgium to find my brother who was studying in Charlerois at the University of Work where he was studying computer science.

Je suis alors arrivé en Belgique pour retrouver mon frère qui étudiait à Charlerois à l’université du Travail où il étudiait l’informatique.

While I was in France, I went around Paris a bit, where I arrived in Trois. There, we were a big community of Ivorians. It was very nice at first, but we did a lot of stupid things together. For example, we used to play soccer and it always ended up in a fight, a bit like what we used to do back home when we were bored, so I didn't like it and I thought it would be better if I didn't stay there, otherwise I would end up in trouble. It was better to leave the group and I set off again to join my brother as soon as possible so as not to waste my time.

Alors que j’étais en France j’ai fait un peu le tour de Paris, où je suis arrivé à Trois. Là, on était une grosse communauté d’ivoiriens. C’était très chouette au début, mais on faisait pas mal de bêtises tous ensemble. Par exemple, on jouait au foot et ça finissait toujours par la bagarre, un peu comme on faisait au pays quand on s'ennuie, donc ça ne m’a pas plus et je me suis dit qu’il vallait mieux que je ne reste pas là sinon j’allais finir par tourner mal. Il valait mieux quitter le groupe et je me suis remis en route pour rejoindre mon frère au plus vite pour ne pas perdre mon temps.

In Belgium there was my older brother, I enrolled at ISTE which is now in Uccles, but was before in Madou. There I did a degree in accounting. There, while I am a student and I come from a modest family, I saw my father sending me money and I had to tell him no daddy don't send me any more money because we are 7 in our family. I'm the third, there are others who will need your help, take care of the little ones, I don't need it. That's how I found the motivation to start working with my brother who was also studying. At that time we were renovating buildings with my sister-in-law, my brother and I at the Bourse in Brussels we renovated a building, a Chinese restaurant. At that time I worked a lot in the restaurant business, I used to go every Saturday and Sunday, when I wasn't going to school, to wash the kitchens of the Chinese restaurants, that's how I was able to buy my first car. And thanks to that, instead of doing only one restaurant a day, I could do more because I could move around more easily.

En Belgique il y avait mon frère aîné, je me suis inscrit à l’ISTE qui est maintenant à Uccles, mais qui était avant à Madou. Là j’ai fait un graduat en comptabilité. Là, alors que je suis étudiant et que je suis issu d’une famille modeste, j’ai vu mon père m’envoyer de l’argent j’ai dû lui dire non papa ne m’envois plus d’argent parce qu’on est 7 dans notre famille. Moi je suis le troisième, il y en a encore d'autres qui vont avoir besoin de ton aide, occupe toi des plus petits moi ce n’est pas la peine. C’est comme ça que j’ai trouvé la motivation pour commencer à travailler avec mon frère qui étudiait aussi. A cette époque là on rénovait les bâtiments avec ma belle soeur, mon frère et moi à la Bourse à Bruxelles on a rénover un bâtiment, un restaurant chinois. A cette époque j’ai beaucoup travaillé dans le domaine de la restauration, j’allais tous les samedis et les dimanches, quand je n’allais pas à l'école j’allais laver les cuisines des restaurants chinois, c’est comme ça que j’ai pu acheter ma première voiture. Et là grâce à ça, au lieu de ne faire qu’un restaurant par jour, j’ai pu en faire plus car je pouvais me déplacer plus facilement.

In 1998, the owner sold the restaurant "le petit bouchon" and opened "planet kid" in Sterrebeek, it was an old dance hall and he renovated it, he turned it into a playground for the children and he called me and I could become chef there until 2001.

En 1998, le propriétaire a vendu le restaurant le petit bouchon et à ouvert “planet kid” à Sterrebeek, c'était un ancien dancing et il n’a rénové, il a tout retapé, il en a fait une plaine de jeux pour les enfants et il m’a appelé et j’ai pu devenir chef de cuisine là bas jusqu’en 2001.

I always worked in the kitchen, but 6 months after the opening of the store I resigned from the kitchen to devote myself to my store that I held there for 5 years and then I was a bit fed up so I went to work at the post office. At the post office I worked as a letter carrier, I stayed one year and I said no, I can't do only that. So I went back to a store in Schaerbeek, <a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenue_Gustave_Latinis">Gustave Latinis</a> 45, there I stayed for 10 years, at the same time I was at the post office too. My wife ran the store while I went to the post office. Around 2 pm I came back and I worked in the store until closing time. So we were there for 10 years.

En 2001, j’ai ouvert mon premier magasin à Forêt, une petite épicerie près du Parc D’Eden à Forêt, vous voyez à la limite de la commune de Forêt et Saint-Gilles, au 162 ou au 158 je ne me rappel plus, ça fait plus de vingts ans déjà quand même. Ma femme tenait le magasin pendant que moi j’allais à la poste. Vers 14h je revenais et je travaillais au magasin jusqu’à la fermeture. Donc on ets resté là 10 ans.

In 2017 I sold this store and I decided to return to Côte D'Ivoire. There I stayed 3 years in the country to work in the construction. I came back to Belgium in 2019 where I did a little uber cab and I didn't like it so I said to myself that I would take back what I know. So I searched and found this place where I am today that had been closed for a year or so (10 months at least). That's how I got started when I took over here. So I have almost 20 years of self-employment under my belt. This experience helped me a lot to launch Tongo-Market, Tongo-Logistic and a series of brands in the field of travel, wellness, utilities for comfort, family and home, in the luxury sector (selection of watches and jewelry) and the web with our new project Tongo Digital. But above all it allowed me to initiate a project that is particularly close to my heart and which is the real reason of my presence here. While traveling I saw how lucky I was and how many opportunities I had, but this is not the case for everyone.

 En 2017 j’ai vendu ce magasin et j’ai décidé de rentrer en Côte D'ivoire. Là je suis resté 3 ans au pays travailler dans le bâtiment. Je suis revenu vers 2019 en Belgique où j’ai fait un peu le Taxi uber et ça ne me plaisait pas alors je me suis dit que j'allais reprendre ce que je connais. J’ai donc cherché et trouvé ce local où je suis aujourd’hui qui était fermé depuis une année ou presque (10 mois au moins). C’est comme ça que je me suis lancé quand j’ai repris ici. Donc j’accumule quasiment 20 ans de vie d’indépendant. Cette expérience m’a beaucoup aidé pour lancer Tongo-Market, Tongo-Logistic ainsi qu’une série de marques dans le domaine du voyage, du bien être, des utilitaires pour le confort, la famille et la maison, dans le secteur du luxe (Sélection de montres et bijoux) et du web avec notre nouveau projet Tongo Digital. Mais surtout ça m’a permis d’initier un projet qui me tient particulièrement à cœur et qui est la vrai raison de ma présence ici. En voyageant j’ai vu à quel point j'ai eu beaucoup de la chance et des opportunités, mais ce n’est pas le cas de tout le monde.

My nickname Max, it came because I was at a time of my life very sporty, I was doing gym and that kind of thing, I had what we call a build and I have a friend in the 90's who was a bouncer in a nightclub the Boccaccio in Ghent and he told me that if I wished I could earn some money on the weekend I could come with him. At that time he was a boxer from Brussels, from the neighborhoods of Saint Gilles, his name is Jimmy, but unfortunately he turned out a little worse, there were so many things going on at that time that you had to have a strong mind not to succumb.

Mon surnom Max, il est venu parce que j’étais à un moment de ma vie très sportif, je faisais de la salle et ce genre de chose, j’avais ce qu’on appel une carrure et j’ai un ami dans les années 90 qui était videur dans une boite de nuit le Boccaccio à Gand et il m’a dit que si je le souhaitais je pouvais gagner un peu de sous le weekend je pouvais venir avec lui. C’était à l’époque un boxeur de Bruxelles, des quartiers de Saint Gilles, il s'appelle Jimmy, mais lui il a malheureusement un peu plus mal tourné, il y avait tellement de choses qui tournaient à l’époque qu’il fallait avoir un mental fort pour ne pas succomber.

What's funny is that after all these years, he gave me the nickname Max because he said to me Youssouf in a nightclub, as a bouncer, it's not going to work from now on you're going to be called Max, it's going to impose a few things, respect, etc... and that's how it started. But as I was saying, the funny thing is that Jimmy passed by here and he didn't recognize me, that's to say how much the path he took must have taken him. He was a friend of mine, but unfortunately he was in some rough circles, otherwise he had a good place, he was making a lot of money in this nightclub, but unfortunately he got into excessive drinking and that's really, I had to distance myself from him even though he was one of my best friends.

Ce qui est rigolo, c’est qu’après toutes ces années alors que c’est lui qui m’a donné ce surnom Max parce que bon il me dit Youssouf en boite de nuit, en tant que videur, ça ne va pas à partir de maintenant tu vas t’appeler Max, ça va imposer un peu de choses quoi, le respect, etc… et c’est comme ça que c’est parti. Mais donc je le disais ce qui est drôle c’est que Jimmy est passé ici et qu’il ne m’a pas reconnu, c’est pour dire à quel point le chemin qu’il a fait a dû lui prendre beaucoup. C'était un ami, mais bon malheureusement il a été dans des milieux durs, sinon il avait une bonne bonne place il gagnait beaucoup d’argent dan cette boite de nuit, mais voilà, malheureusement il s’est lancé dans des consommations excessives et ça vraiment, j’ai du prendre mes distances avec lui alors que c’était l’un de mes meilleurs amis.

In this type of environment, if you use, it never lasts, it can't last, it's the health that won't allow it before everything else. That's what sank Jimmy, he came here and didn't recognize me, I know I'm repeating myself, but imagine a lifelong friend who doesn't recognize you, it marks you. He came over he looked at me and bought me a pack of cigarettes and he didn't say anything to me not "Hey brother, how have you been all this time" he just took the cigarettes, didn't give me time to say anything and left. If I had told him hey Jimmy but you remember, he wasn't going to let go of me so maybe it's not a bad thing because he had quite a bit of history with the police, it's things there sooner or later... you rarely get out of it unscathed. Otherwise he was in very, very good circles, a bourgeois circle in Flanders, he took me sometimes to people's houses, they were party people from the first to the 31st, so I said to myself, well, this is not my life, these are people who have the means to lead this life and who have nothing else to do or don't need to do anything and so I left. I don't have those means, if I started like that it would have been just to go into debt and stay in that type of environment if tomorrow you have a problem there is no one there. So it was better for me to go back to my own way, otherwise this environment was very interesting in many ways, but when you saw their cars at 18 or 25 years old, they were branded coupes. When we came out of this type of event after a night of work we got huge tips, it was crazy.

Dans ce type de milieux, si vous consommez, ça ne dure jamais, ça ne peut pas durer, c’est la santé qui ne le permettra pas avant tout le reste. C’est ça qui a coulé Jimmy, il est venu ici et ne m’a pas reconnu, je sais je me répète, mais imaginez un ami de toujours qui ne vous reconnait pas ça vous marque. Il est venu il m’a regardé et m’a acheté un paquet de cigarettes et il ne m’a rien dit pas de “Salut mon frère, comment ça va depuis tout ce temps”, il a juste pris les cigarettes, ne m’a pas laissé le temps de dire quoi que ce soit et est parti. Si je lui avais dit hé Jimmy mais tu te rappels, il n’allait plus me lâcher donc ce n’est peut-être pas plus mal car il a eu pas mal d’histoire avec la police, c’est choses là tôt ou tard… on en sort rarement indemne. Sinon il fréquentait de très très bon milieux, un milieu bourgeois en Flandre, il m’amenait des fois chez des personnes, c’était des fêtards du premier au 31, bon je me suis dit bon moi c’est pas ma vie tout ça, ce sont des gens qui ont les moyens de mener cette vie et qui n’ont rien d’autre à faire ou n’on pas besoin de faire quoi que ce soit et donc je suis parti. Je n’ai pas ces moyens, si je commençais comme ça cela aurait été juste pour m’endetter et rester dans ce type d’environnement si demain tu a un problème il n’y a personne qui est là. Il valait donc mieux pour moi de reprendre ma route sinon ce milieu était très intéressant à plus d’un point mais quand tu voyais leurs bagnoles à 18 ou 25 ans c’était des coupés de marque. Quand on sortait de ce type d’événement après une soirée à travailler on avait des pourboires énormes, c'était fou.

Otherwise, apart from my training, I come from a lineage that in my community is known to be traders, even if we studied and that kind of thing, basically my mother was already doing her own little business, my father was a boilermaker, that is to say a ship repairer in a big French company, but in the evening he had his little store in the neighborhood, So if you want, we are a bit of a shopkeeper at heart, but to be honest, here I learned how to trade with Europeans, because in Côte d'Ivoire, the shopkeeper will not smile at you, there is no welcome, no hello, no such thing, but here it counts. It was with a friend who was also at the small stopper, he was a dishwasher and I was a clerk and at one point he was with a Pakistani who was fed up, may he rest in peace (he passed away today), he was fed up with the store. What I'm talking about dates back to 1995, he said to him "Germain, this is what you would like, I have a store for sale on rue du Bailli near Avenue Louise Afrimark, the store is still there today". And that's how Germain took this store and when I saw Germain good have such a success, he had stopped the dishwasher where we were and he really started to evolve and I said to him listen Germain, well I would like to do like you. He told me to come whenever you want and so I went there on Saturday evenings and Sundays, sometimes even with my oldest who was still in his stroller at the time and whom I took with me. That was in 2000, maybe a year before I opened my store. And that's how I saw how Germain did things, how he welcomed people, how he behaved with customers and I said to myself, this is completely different from the way we do business in Africa.

Sinon au niveau en dehors de ma formation, je suis d’une lignée qui dans ma communauté est connue pour être des commerçants, même si on fait des études et ce genre de chose, à la base déjà ma mère faisait déjà son petit commerce, mon père il était chaudronnier, c’est à dire réparateur de bâteaux dans une grande compagnie Française, mais le soir il avait sa petite boutique au quartier, donc il finissait son truc, il venait il gérait sa boutique jusqu'à la fermeture jusqu'à 22h par exemple, donc si tu veux on est un peu commerçant dans l’âme, mais pour être honnête, ici le commerce avec les Européens, c’est ici que je l’ai appris, parce que en Côte d’Ivoire le commerçant tu vas rentrer, il ne va pas te sourire, il n’y a pas d'accueil de bonjour et de ce genre de choses, mais ici ça compte. C’est avec un ami qui était aussi au petit bouchon, lui il était plongeur et moi j’étais commis et arrivé à un moment lui il côtoyait un Pakistanais qui en avait marre, paix à son âme (il est décédé aujourd’hui), il en avait marre du magasin. Ce dont je vous parle date de 1995, il lui a dit voilà Germain est ce que tu voudrais bien, j’ai un magasin à vendre rue du bailli près de l’avenue Louise Afrimark, le magasin est toujours là aujourd’hui d’ailleurs. Et c’est comme ça que Germain a pris ce magasin et quand j’ai vu Germain bon avoir un tel succès, il avait arrêté la plonge où on était et il a commencé vraiment à évoluer et moi je lui ai dit écoutes Germain, bon moi j’aimerais faire comme toi. Il m’a dit viens quand tu veux et donc j’allais là bas le Samedi soir et les dimanches, parfois même avec mon plus grand qui était à ce moment encore dans sa poussette et que je prenais avec moi. Ca c'était en 2000, peut être un an avant que j’ouvre mon magasin. Et c’est comme ça que j’ai vu comment faisait Germain, comment il accueillait les gens, comment il se comportait avec la clientèle et je me suis dit mais c’est complètement différent de la manière dont nous on fait le commerce en Afrique.

You see in Africa you are there, the guy does it more by need, that is to say he comes and buys because he is in need but here people have the choice. So if there is no welcome, the customer goes elsewhere. With Germain I really learned that and he didn't pay me, I didn't want to, what I wanted was to learn. I worked with him for about a year, but I told him I don't need to, no no no, I want to learn, that's all, and we bought, I remember very well, he sent me to get some bones at the local restaurant, and at that time there weren't really these rules of closure like there are now, well it always existed but at the time it was never respected and yet there was a police office a few hundred meters away almost right across the street, but they didn't care, we did day shop and night shop, we did the videos, there was for adults downstairs and for the public upstairs, it was a very nice and interesting place to do that So I helped him as a volunteer to learn and after that I looked in the newspaper Vlan and that's how I found the place. A couple, a French man and his wife who were fed up, they were retiring, and they sold it to me for I think at the time it was 12,000 Belgian Francs at the time it was a handful that didn't represent much.

Tu vois en Afrique tu es là, le type le fait plus par besoin, c'est -à -dire il vient il achète parce qu’il est dans le besoin mais ici les gens ont le choix. Voila donc si il n’y a pas cet accueil le client il va voir ailleurs. Avec Germain j’ai vraiment appris ça et attention il ne me payait pas, je ne voulais pas, ce que je souhaitais c’était apprendre. J’ai travaillé avec lui un an environ, mais je lui ai dit je n’ai pas besoin, non non non, je veux apprendre c’est tout et on achetait je me rappel très bien, il m'envoyait en allant chercher des petits os au restaurant du coin et à ce moment il n’y avait pas vraiment ces règles de fermeture comme il y a maintenant, enfin ça a toujours existé mais bon ce n’était à l’époque jamais respecté et pourtant il y avait un bureau de Police à quelques centaines de mètres quasi juste en face, mais ils s'en foutaient, on faisait day shop et night shop, on faisait les vidéos, il y avait pour les adultes en bas et pour le tout publique en haut, c’était un très beau coin et très intéressant pour faire ça. Donc je l’ai aidé bénévolement pour apprendre et après ça j’ai regardé dans le journal Vlan et c’est comme ça que j’ai trouvé le local. Un couple, un homme Français et sa femme qui en avaient marre, ils prenaient leur retraite, et il m’ont vendu ça pour je crois à l’époque c’était 12 000 Francs Belge à l’époque c’était une poignée ça ne représentait pas grand chose.

There was more and more migration in the neighborhood and it was going up more and more towards the park and so there were more and more young people hanging out in the streets and it was no longer for this couple who had already done their time there, they already had their house, they just wanted to retire and so I was very lucky. They sold it to me for a pittance and I re-launched that store, I stayed for five years. I got there because Germain gave me a helping hand, I didn't have enough money and Germain had already started to be a half wholesaler, so what he did, he supplied me and I paid him on Sunday, so he allowed me to really have a working capital and everything that is necessary to start without taking too much risk. When Germain started selling cigarettes, he started having problems with communities and then it started to go wrong, I'll skip the details but in the end I found myself in a delicate situation, but as he was someone who had done me a favor, I wanted to return the favor. At one point it went to court, but fortunately I was totally cleared because I had nothing to do with it and the court quickly understood. I have had some extraordinary stories in my life and I will be very happy to tell you more about them in my next publications.

Il y avait de plus en plus de migration dans le quartier et ça remontait de plus en plus vers le parc et donc il y avait de plus en plus de jeunes qui traînaient dans les rues et ce n’était plus pour ce couple qui avait déjà fait son temps là, ils avaient déjà leur maison, ils voulaient juste partir en retraite et donc j’ai eu beaucoup de chance. Ils m’ont vendu ça pour une bouchée de pain et j'ai relancé ce magasin, je suis resté cinq ans. Je suis arrivé là en fait parce que Germain m’a donné un coup de pouce, c’est à dire que moi je n’avais pas assez de moyens et donc Germain il avait déjà commencé à être demi grossiste, donc qu’est ce qu’il faisait, il me fournissait et je le payais le dimanche, donc il m’a permis de vraiment avoir un fond de roulement et tout ce qui est nécessaire pour démarrer sans prendre trop de risques. Quand Germain a commencé à vendre les cigarettes, il a commencé à avoir des problèmes avec des communautés et là ça a commencé à mal tourner, je vous passe les détails mais en fin de compte je me suis retrouvé dans une situation délicate, mais comme c’était quelqu’un qui m’avait rendu service, je voulais lui rendre l'ascenseur. A un moment c’est passé au tribunal, mais heureusement j’ai été totalement blanchi car je n’avais rien à voir dans cette affaire et le tribunal a vite compris. J’ai eu dans mon parcours donc des histoires assez extraordinaires et je serai très heureux de vous en raconter davantage dans mes prochaines publications.

When I travel, I usually go to an orphanage that is run by good friends. During one of these visits, I met a little girl who was born without a hole to defecate, I could not help but be sensitive to her situation and that of her family who could not afford the operation necessary for the well-being and health of this little child, This is why I am also setting up a non-profit organization where I have already gathered the shopkeepers of my neighborhood who participate in a kitty that allows to support this type of reality but also to provide a Christmas and vacations to underprivileged and or abandoned children.

Lors de mes voyages, je vais habituellement dans un orphelinat qui est dirigé par de bons amis. Durant l’un de ces séjour et d’une de ces visites, j’ai fait la connaissance d’une petite fille qui est née sans orifice pour déféquer, je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d'être sensible à sa situation et celle de sa famille qui n’avait pas les moyens de prendre en charge l’opération nécessaire au bien être et la santé de ce petit enfant, c’est pourquoi je monte également une organisation à but non lucratif où j’ai déjà réuni les commerçants de mon quartier qui participent à une cagnotte qui permet de supporter ce type de réalité mais aussi de fournir un Noel et des vacances à des enfants défavorisés et ou abandonnés.
