My buddy [Clayboyn](https://steemit.com/@clayboyn) wrote a [post about curation](https://steemit.com/curation/@clayboyn/fixing-curation-can-i-get-a-witness) a while back in response to a PAL-Discord community discussion about the future of the platform in the wake of the bidbot scandal. I wanted to comment on his post but the comment became so long that I decided to throw my opinions into the community pot. 

And yes it's been sitting in hackmd.io for over a week, forgotten in the midst of the bidbot trials. However I'm pulling it out now since curation swiping is now in play.

Clays idea is to change the curation rewards so that curating is more profitable for curators, in order to increase curation attempts and inspire a more content driven platform. He asked for comments by witnesses in order to further discussion. Not many people responded, which is sad. It seems many people want to complain about rewards and bidbots but not many take a stab at how to resolve issues. A few people worry on how this can be done without undermining investors.

I think we do need to motivate curation, however without support this will not happen. I think the high profile group curation pages such as Curie and OCD do a fantastic job working towards upvoting excellent content. The issue is that there arent enough curation groups upvoting good content. I think one of the problems with curation groups is that they are all vying for the same pie, while ignoring the cookies and fruit also on the table. Here are a few suggestions for curations groups, and even individuals.

**First Suggestion: Educate the new users and average joes on how to curate well in a limited amount of time.**

I've been here three months and I'm still not sure exactly how curation rewards work. Every article I've found on it is at least six months old, and the math is so screwy its like taking trig in high school. Can we get something simple and recent? Also, whats the best strategy? Is it even worth upvoting or should one just go for commenting? For as many people as I ask, I get different answers as to timing and percentages. Rewards need to be clearly defined and set in print in a place that is easy to find. 

**Second Suggestion: Widen the parameters by which you curate. Create a curation for people who have rep 52-60, or make a target list of authors whose posts are under performing, and mentor them**

Another issue is that the guidelines for Curie content, and other curation sites, are too stringent. Curie currently only curates below rep 52, tho they do make exceptions. Other places allow 54. However that leaves out higher level rep authors that were late to whip out long articles and the content creators who still make way under a dollar or two a post. They also give that one good writer who has started steem only a few weeks back an astronomical boost that then drops back down to pennies. End result? The same bunch of incredible content writers are getting noticed until they hit rep 54, and the rest are still sucking eggs. 

**Suggestion Three: Curate and or mentor people who really need help with writing, skills, apps, language. Help the people who show promise but are struggling.**

Who can write really good content? People who are well off enough to invest in schooling, technology and honing their skills. Some can afford to go on trips all over the world because they have a paying occupation, like photographer. Who is failing? People who do not have the resources, skills or time to spend. Poor people from third world cultures who cannot speak english or those who must work all day to make ends meet. So who are we really helping? First world people who probably don't need help. 

This suggestion above comes from a memory of myself at week one. Inquiring Times became my mentor, and provided me with valuable insights into useful apps, writing with html, and boosting my confidence. This made a huge difference, and that got me on track. Think what that would mean to new Steemians who are struggling.

**Fourth Suggestion: Spread the love.**

By this I mean - look for the good posts; give those people a solid but modest boost. But then take a bunch of voting power and dedicate it to people whose articles are just plain good, but maybe not really all that long or filled with incredible photography, but consistently good work. Instead of giving 5 people $50, give 50 people $5.
