A minimalistic lifestyle and one million dollars?

*If I won a million dollars, would it contribute to a minimalist life? Or would I simply fill up the perceived gaps of this materialistic existence with stuff?*
That's the question I got from @riverflows and when @riverflows asks I response:)
I absolutely agree with [everything](https://peakd.com/hive-194848/@riverflows/i-choose-the-million-bucks-and-a-simple-life) she says and I am not sure what more I can add.

Minimalism is a mindset and it doesn't have to do with money. For me minimalism means simplicity, having all that you need and wanting all that you have.
Not only in material life, but also in mind. Clear mind, beauty around and gratitude.

*Well, experience has shown that money help to all the above.*

But the questions that come up to my mind are do I really need something more and am I happy with what I already have?

Having enough money can give you the time needed to do all you love. Of course, that's an option that you have to choose. Not all wealthy people live a life of real abundance and calmness. And not all lifestyles require a lot of money.
It's not easy to accept the fact that money is essential in this capitalist society and I still try to stop feeling guilty about the simple fact that I need to have some money.

Having too much material around can make you loose your focus.
As well as too many thoughts, too much information, too much analysis can lead to paralysis. What's the meaning of life if not to live it?

My answer to the question of this contest is pretty clear, I will gladly take the money and I will keep the minimalistic lifestyle that I have already consciously adopted and pretty much enjoy it, but without the everyday stress of money.

It sounds like an easy decision to make but honestly it needs some hard work to get there, especially mental work. It is not easy to let yourself be happy with what you have, to keep a quiet mind and be able to live the moment. It is like unlearning what school and society have tried to teach you as important all these years. Once you do it, there is no way back I guess. I will let you know if I ever get in that state :)

One million dollars! I would buy some land and plant anything that comes in my mind. An experimental garden, my paradise. I think that's all! Being able to live without worries about money and it would be great to be able to support others. Prices in the area I am interested in are luckily quite low when you have a million dollars in your pocket, so I would have a lot of spare money. I wouldn't say no to some travel, too...

Not getting the money? I am pretty happy with my not so perfect life. Anyway, I believe in imperect minimalism :)

I agree. I would buy land and jump start the homestead again. I've thought about it some over the years, and it's always the same. A little more land and just raise as much of my own food as I could. Make the homestead more self sufficient. Repair what needs repaired. It would just enable me to keep doing what I've been doing.

It must be amazing to be self sufficient! Ok, we can't have it all, but it is so nice to walk around and collect fruits throughout the whole year. Most of our land is rented, so we can't experiment as much as we would like :)

I do believe this is true, and I have observed this with many. 

Also true that not all lifestyles require a lot of money, but having some gives peace of mind.

Yes, a minimalist lifestyle is not an easy one. It takes self work, personal and spiritual growth to find content in the simple things, and live a simple life with content.

I see wealth as purchasing power. That said, I believe the amount of work needed to maintain a certain amount of wealth is just way too stressful. And depending on how this wealth is allocated, given the volatility, the imminence of losing it all is just dependent on the mindset. Now the real issue is: can we maintain consumerism in check when we are extremely wealthy? Not that consumerism is a sin, but it sure is capable of destroying someone's balance. This is where I'm at in life; I want to achieve a certain degree of financial freedom, but don't want to sacrifice time. {shit, the paradox}.

This phrase summarizes what I wanted to say in my post but couldn't find the words. Later that day I realized that minimalism could be simply 'making the most use of what we have'. I like the way you put it here.

Oh yes!! This is so true. Imagine being super rich and stressed and burdened by life, and leaving it all behind to walk into the forest  and finding the answers to life there. You couldn't go back. I mean, people pay for digital detox air bnbs in the middle of nowhere with no reception to reboot!!

Hi Fotini, thanks for your post. It is wonderful how alike we are, it makes me happy to find a kindred soul so far away geographically and so close in the Hive community. 

My friend shared this talk with me and the part that we talked about most is from 1:50-3:05. Brad Wilcox is talking to students and says if you truly want to do something you will do it right now, you will not wait till you are rich. That makes me think. What do I truly want to do? Am I doing it right now?

I just checked the video, the part you are talking about is WONDERFUL! So grateful that you shared it with me!
Yes, why wait? That's a good question. I've noticed that every time I procrastinate, it's usually because I don't really feel passionate with what I have to do. It is a good signal :)
Have you noticed it, too?
Sometimes it might also mean that I want it so much that fear of failing comes in... That's why it is important to enjoy the small steps to the dream (easier to say than to do), the dream might never be reached or maybe when I get there I'll say "Is that it?", haha!
We came to the island with a plan in our mind, we totally failed, learned so many things and created something else that is evolving (so, also changing) all the time.
The lecturer is so right! It is like what your friend said the other day, to already start doing things to the direction of your goal.
You really made me think, Am I also doing what I want?
