Atari Making New Console, First Time in over 20 Years

According to the statements made by Atari's CEO, Fred Chesnais, Atari is back in the console business. This is apparently happening with the launch of the "Ataribox" which many have thought just to be another Flashback style plug and play (which released many times over before the NES Classic Mini did). Others have thought the Ataribox was just going to be a new skin for the dashboard or something to do with the Xbox line of consoles, probably going off the "box" in the title.

According to an interview with [Venture Beat](https://venturebeat.com/2017/06/16/atari-ceo-confirms-the-company-is-working-on-a-new-game-console/) Chesnais stated Atari are returning to the hardware market. Now, keep in mind, they have not been in hardware since the Atari Jaguar failed in the early to mid 1990's. This is an extended time to be out of hardware, especially to think they will just jump right back in  and compete with Sony, Microsoft, and even Nintendo.

This depends completely on what "it" is exactly. If it is just another plug and play then no. If it is a brand new console then I have to wonder "why?"

It's a ridiculously long shot that this would happen, but wouldn't it be hilarious if they came out of nowhere with a console more powerful and feature packed than the PS4 or X Box One X at a lower price point and took over the console market?

It wouldn't really affect me one way or the other because I'm a PC gamer, but it would make me smile simply because the Atari 2600 was my first gaming console when I was a kid. 

I have a lot of fond memories of  that gigantic, wood-grained bastard.

This will be interesting. I'm not sure how they will be able to compete in the market today, but more hardware makers are a positive thing in my eyes ;)

I am concerned that this is just fancy dancing around the fact that they are just making an "official" #Atari plug and play and that all this "interest" in the new Atari #hardware is going to blow up in their faces.
