F355 Challenge on Sega Dreamcast Receives Fan Update
Sega was well known for their racing games. From Outrun and Hang-On in the 8/16-Bit days, to Sega Rally in the later console generations, Sega had arcade racing down to a “T”. On the Sega Dreamcast, their last foray into console manufacturing, they had a few great racing titles, one being F355 Challenge. Only problem I really had with it was lack of viewpoints.

Fans have fixed that now.

Owning a dying market segment

We could argue all day long about what actually killed Sega and the Dreamcast. From financials to piracy to lack of EA support. Whatever you think it is, it very well could be the reason. I have heard, and agree with, people discuss their downfall being so focused on arcades.

Sure, in the 8 and 16-Bit, even early 32-Bit era, arcades were a major component of the home console market. Even Nintendo knew this and offered up their [PlayChoice-10 line of arcade units](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayChoice-10_games) and [VS units](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_VS._System).

Sega went all out with their arcade machines, especially the racing games. F355 Challenge had multiple options for arcade owners. Up to three screen configurations were available, powered by four Naomi boards (one for each screen, one to manage them all).

Simply wow.

Setting aside that being stupidly overpowered compared to a single Sega Dreamcast, fans were simply not in arcades like they were just half a decade prior. Arcades were closing all over the world.

For a good idea of how to do a home port of an arcade game, look at what Namco did during the 32-Bit era then look at Sega’s offerings. Night and day.

Someone forgot to tell Sega though.

Enter the fans

It is true, the Sega Dreamcast didn’t sell all that many units in the short time it was alive, [almost reaching 10 million units sold](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast).

Fans have refused to let Sega’s final console die though. I will just mention the tons of homebrew and ports that are available, only because those are not the focus of this article.

Then there are the hacks and mods of commercially released games.

F355 Challenge is one of the latest to receive a fan mod. Here, fans have added a 3rd person viewpoint, over the top of the car. I get, this being a simulation, as to why this view was not included, but come on, it is so important to many racing game fans.

Now you can enjoy this great simulation using a viewpoint that is very un-simulation. Sega has been pretty cool about mods to their games but I would suggest grabbing the mod ASAP as their perspective could change at any time.
